PROGRAM for JANUARY

Editor; Joan O’Byrne

JANUARY 2019

KATHLEEN KEMLY7543 13th Ave NWSeattle, WA [email protected]

Like many people, I find solace and peace in nature. Hiking in the forest or standing on my porch

watching a rainstorm roll in over the city brings me to a place of connectivity with all things. As an avid backpacker, I have explored the mountains of Washington State, as well as hiking in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Oregon, Utah, British Columbia, New York and California.

PAINTINGS OF THE MONTH November 2018

Second Place; Joan Glenn “Room with a View” Watercolor

First Place; Joan O’Byrne “ Irish Light, Dunquin” Watercolor

Third Place; Lauren Andrews “Hug Point” Oil .

My hope is that my paintings become a portal for others to experience the joy and beauty that I find in the world.

“Humanity, take a good look at yourself. Inside you’ve got heaven and earth, and all of creation. You’re a world-everything is hidden in you.”Hildegard von Bingen.

Color and movement are the first things you notice about Kathleen Kemly's paintings. Her lush landscapes and figures convey an immediacy of place and time. Kemly uses painted paper as brushstrokes, a technique that allows for surprising juxtapositions of color and texture in her acrylic paintings.  An avid hiker and observer of the world, she is inspired by a reverence for nature and a fascination with people and the connection between the two. Kemly’s sense of color created by light is influenced by Pierre Bonnard. Using bold forms with color as the unifier derives from her study of the works of Richard Deibenkorn. David Hockney provides inspiration for new ways of looking at the landscape.  Kathleen Kemly received her BFA in illustration from Parsons School of Design, NYC; she has continued her study of painting at Gage Academy, Seattle. She has illustrated many award winning children's books, most recently Molly, By Golly! by Dianne Ochiltree.

A MESSAGE FROM

CO-ARTS PRESIDENT

Joyce Donaldson

Whew! It’s been a busy time for all of us! I hope everyone enjoyed the festivities of the holiday season. It is such fun to get together, and also nice to get back to a regular schedule. That may even mean getting back into our studios or “painting caves.”

Our juried show is coming up and as Janice and the planning committee have announced, the theme will encourage painters to “paint outside the lines”. That’s rather scary for some of us to approach. I, for example, usually stick to landscapes or western themes for my oil paintings. (I was doing my share of fretting over this stretch.)

Then we had the November meeting. Upon arrival, we found that the kitchen was under renovation. Adapting to the situation in a matter of seconds, Judith, Cheryl and volunteers sprang into action and punted (or took to “painting outside the lines”) and we all had treats and beverages to enjoy.

At the same time, the program team and volunteers assembled the visual/sound set up for our presenter, Che Lopez.

Che had so much fun with his art! His presentation was about “painting outside the lines” in his own way. It was perfect inspiration for our coming show. I already have my watercolors out and will be “playing” with new ideas, and remembering to paint for the joy of it. Maybe I won’t get into the juried show, but I will have fun!

NOVEMBER Demonstration by CHE LOPEZ submitted by Ruth Handewith

Che Lopez, an ex-president of Northwest Watercolor Society and a well known local teacher. presented a dynamic demonstration of colorful aspen trees using acrylic media. He advised us not to overthink our process but to attack the piece.

For his painting surface he uses the backs of old election signs which he cuts to his own specifications and then applies an initial coat of gesso. He works with fresh paint which he drops right on the painting surface and quickly brushes onto the background.

The tree trunks and a few branches are applied with the edge of a palette knife. To finish he splattered the tree tops with a variety of bright colors.

Che teaches Acrylics at Pratt Institute, Watercolor and drawing at Kirkland Art Center, Cloud 9 in Bothell and demonstrates at Daniel Smith. Che is a signature member of the NWWS and is a member of EFA.

GOOD PARKING NEWS

Many members have found it difficult to find parking by the Masonic Center for meetings and workshops and may have stopped coming to meetings because of this.

Well parking is available again across the street in the local Fred Meyer Parking Lot so we hope to see many more of you at the General Meeting on January 22nd.

Experimenting with Larry Calkins at Fall Workshop

By Delorse Lovelady

Larry Calkins provided a rich and wonderful experience for CoArts members at his workshop, “5 Element Collage.”

Larry challenged us with his minimalist collage approach using only 1 to 5 elements! He showed how to make ink pens from coke can metal, then a hibiscus twig, and demonstrated using them for the mysterious asemic writing. He quickly cut and assembled a small booklet, stitched it together and did decorative stitching with an ancient Singer sewing machine.

Thanks to Larry for filling our creative wells with great ideas and new directions for our artwork! A special thank you to those of you who helped make this workshop run so smoothly: Judith Silverman, Eve Ingraham, Lauriel Sandstrom and Nancy Blakemore.
