CHILD LABOR IN UKRAINE
By: Harrisen, Emmy, Zach, and Sela
What Is Child Labor?
“Child labor, as defined by International Labour Organization (ILO) is work done by children under the age of 12; work by children under the age of 15 that prevents school attendance; and work by children under the age of 18 that is hazardous to their physical or mental health. Child labor is an economic activity or work that interferes with the completion of a child's education or that is harmful to children in any way.”
Child Labor in Ukraine
Child Labor in Ukraine Many children enter into
child labor because their family needs more money or their parent’s aren’t able to provide for them
Tetiana Kondratuik writes for a Ukrainian news paper that “Some of them are forced to work, even by their own parents, who say “What will you get out of school?” “Let the child work.” “Better he should work than be an idler.””
Child Labor in Ukraine Often times children
enter into illegal forms of work such as prostitution, selling drugs, and selling stolen goods
The Kiev news paper says that ““workers,” who are engaged in such illicit activities are deprived of all legal rights.”
Child Labor in Ukraine One of the main ways child labor is prevalent in Ukraine is that children
often times work alongside their parents in illegal coal mines The International Labour Organization Reports that there are more than
800 mines in operation that use child labor They say that these mines are some “of the most dangerous workplaces
in the modern world”
Interview with Dima, 15 year old Child Mine Laborer in Donbass, Ukraine
(What do you parents do?) “My mother doesn’t work. She has 2 small children. Father has left
us.” Along with his grandmother’s small pension, Dima’s work supports
5 people. (How much money do you bring to the family?) “All the money that I earn here.” (How much do you get in a month?) “Between 30 and 60 dollars.” Dima’s family is typical in this region where half of the legally-
operated mines have closed down. The loss of jobs and lowered wages has caused many families to turn to illegal small scale mines or “Kopankas” to survive. Coal is very near the surface in this region of Ukraine, so a kopanka can be started anywhere. Organizations Working to Fight Child Labor Organizations helping this issue that are based in
Ukraine can really help make a difference in this huge problem that is child labor – since they are working directly with the victims in that country
We think that organizations could play a large role in changing and helping these victims
In our action plan, we would contact some of the organizations dealing with child slavery and more specifically the organizations working with this problem that are located and focused in Ukraine
Free The Children The Free the Children organization is a global organization that helps prevent child
labor – it provides helpful yet scary statistic on this leading issue This organization recognizes that many children around the world work and have jobs
but establishes the difference between work and forced labor – mainly with characteristics of abusive treatment and no access to education
They list types of child labor and how you can detect it – much of child labor can be hazardous, being very difficult and harmful to the kids physical development
Free the Children helps get kids out of child labor They think that the knowledge people have in social and political and ecological issues
of our time is the key foundation to positive change This organizations main focus is on education, they value education very highly
because when children are forced into child labor many things are taken from them – including any form of education
This organization talks about how important it is for other children to stand up and speak out for other children suffering with this issue
They say that sometimes individually, a child's voice can be unheard but when a group of brave children stand together and speak out they can be the most powerful impacters
This organization also has teamed up with various similar organizations – one including the International Labour Organization (ILO) to help fight this global issue

The Public
By educating the public and teaching them to recognize child labor when it is occurring the general public can become one of the most powerful combatants to child labor
They can donate to organizations that fight the problem of child labor
As well as reporting child labor if they do find that it is occuring
Lawyers
Lawyers and the judicial system can be the forefront in the fight against child labor if they are educated about the issue and decide to fight it
They can help to prosecute offenders of child labor laws as well as help to make better laws and regulations against the problem
The Ukrainian Government If the Government is educated that the
problem of child labor is something that they can help to fight then they can be pushed to make a change to help fight child labor as well as stop the causes of child labor
Stopping Child Labor
The government of Ukraine has the ability to help the problem of child labor by enforcing child labor laws and regulations better and looking out for child labor throughout the country
Stopping The Causes
The Ukrainian Government also has the ability to stop the causes of child labor by helping to better the economy and also helping to push more kids into school and education instead of underage work
By stopping the causes of Child Labor we can stop the problem
Investigation
Investigate major companiesCompanies that are making more money
then normal might be using slave labor.○ The free labor and low cost of feeding the
slaves might be a reason that the company is making more money then normal.
