The famous five were a group Canadian of women working together to help give all women the rights they deserve.

The famous five consisted of: Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney, Henrietta Edwards.

The famous five was also called The Valiant Five.

Emily Murphy

Emily Murphy was born on March 14th, 1868 and died on Oct.17th, 1933 at age 65.

She was best known for helping in Canadian Feminism.

She was an author, a Canadian Women’s rights activist, and she served as a jurist.

She was the third of 6 children.She was the first was the first female judge on the British Empire.

Nellie McClung

Born Oct. 20th, 1873, died Sept. 1st, 1951 at age 77.

She was a member of The Alberta Legislature and a famous suffragist.

She was married to Robert Wesley McClung.She was born in Chatsworth Ontario.Her and Robert had 5 children, they are: Mark, Jack, Florence, Horace, and Paul.She taught in a one room school house in Summerset, Manitoba.

Henrietta Muir Edwards

Born Dec. 18th, 1849 and died Nov.10th, 1931.She was born Henrietta Louise Muir in

Montreal.In Oct. 2009 her and the famous five were

voted the “honorary Sensations” by the Senate.

Born Jan.9, 1868 and died July 12,1965.She was born Irene Marryat in London,

England andcame to Canada in 1896.Parbly helped find the first woman's local

United Farms of Alberta in 1913.In 1921 she was elected to the Alberta Legislature for the Riding of Lacombe holding the riding for 14 years.

Born Sept.22,1868 and died July 10 1931.She was born Louise Crummy in Frankville,

Ontario.She was the first woman sworn in to bethe legislative Assembly in Alberta.Louise was the first elected woman to a

legislature in Canada and in the BritishEmpire from 1917-1921.

These five extraordinary women were the heart and soul of the fight for women’s rights.

They were best known as the group who struggled to have women recognized as “people” by law.

The right for women (The Person’s Case) is the most well known victory for the Famous Five,

They gave women the right to vote and run in elections.

Achieving the female suffrage and winning the Person’s Case were highlights in the 20th century.

How Did it Happen?

They held rallies, gave speeches, and even wrote letters to politicians.

In the First World War thousands of women joined the work force and proved to be the equal of men.

Manitoba was the first province to give women the right to vote and by 1917 women could vote in Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario.

Women got the right to run in elections in 1919.
