A is for Amish

The Amish came to America from Switzerland they are currently in 27 states. Including our state Iowa. The old order Amish are baptized at age 18. Amish girls wear modest dresses of black and white.

B is for Buffalo Bill Cody

He was borne near Le Clair Iowa and died in Denver when he was 70. He had 4 children 2 died of scarlet fever, which was a mostly fatal at his time.

C is for Corn

Corn has been planted in Iowa for a long time. Corn is Iowa's signature plant. People from all over come to see Iowa’s huge cornfields. Did you know that the most important day is the day its planted.

D IS FOR durum museumThe durum museum is in council bluffs. It was founded in 1924. people come from all over the state to see it.

E IS FOR eastern gold finch

The Eastern Gold Finch is a very unique bird, because it never migrates it stays in the same place. It is the state bird of 5 states including Iowa. In my opinion it is one of the prettiest birds.

F IS FOR FarmingFarming has been in Iowa for a long time. It has made Iowa a famous state. Iowa has perfect conditions for farming. It has changed over the years from wood plow to tractors.

G is for Gypsum

Gypsum is a very soft mineral, there is a whole bunch in Fort Dodge. The Cardiff giant was made of gypsum

H IS FOR Herbert Hover

Herbert Hover was the 21 president. He was born in west wing Iowa. He was in office for 4 years before he died in New York City.

The ice age happened 12 million years ago. It gave Iowa the soil and the flat ground. If we didn’t have the ice age we would be in very high altitude.

John Wayne was borne in Iowa, and his weight was 13 pounds . He produced he directed and stared in the movie “The Alamo’’. He changed his name from Marion Morningson to John Wayne.

Keokuk was a very peaceful man. He has a whole city named after him, and a statue at the front of the city. Chief Black Hawk said Keokuk was a coward. Log cabins are in the northwestern part of Iowa, they have wooden floors also called ponged flooring. Log cabins where easy to catch fire and pretty cold in the winter but cool in the summer.

The Mississippi River is the East border of Iowa. The Mississippi ends at the gulf of México. Did you know that the Mississippi is the 5th largest river in the world.

Norwegians immigrated in the 18 hundreds they make up 25% of Iowa. They make up a lot of the population.

Pioneer life was very hard they had to make every thing by hand. They had to grow their own food. They didn’t have grocery stores.

Roses are a signature plant to Iowa. In Iowa wild roses are the most common are wild roses that you can find in ditches.

Sod houses where made of sod strips from the ground. They kept the house a lot warmer than log cabins, but they were VERY small and there were little pieces of wood

Underwood is a town right off council bluffs Underwood started off as a railroad town but most people moved to council bluffs.

The Villisca Ax Murder House is a house in Villisca Iowa. Iowa was a very famous state at the time . Because six children, and 2 adults where murdered grousemly with an ax, you can still see blood on the wall.

Water storms rain is very common in Iowa. But the lightning doesn’t came down it stays in the clouds.
