Onegin 5
A year and a half ago, as part of our fi rst season at the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, we premiered this work. One of our Silver Commissions, Onegin, by the duo of Veda Hille and Amiel Gladstone, proved to be a huge hit with Vancouver audiences. We were thrilled with the response and decided to remount this Jessie award winner at the Granville Island Stage, to celebrate its local Arts Club origins and its subsequent national success! The Arts Club has a long history of premieres that have enjoyed successful afterlives, beginning with Sherman Snukal’s Talking Dirty, in 1981, stretching across the years and various venues to the family comedy The Day Before Christmas (by Stacey Kaser and Alision Kelly), which is playing right now on our Goldcorp Stage.
If you saw the world premiere of Onegin last year, you might notice a few small changes—that’s how new plays evolve. Our company, too, has evolved since our founding by Yvonne Firkins at the Seymour Street Arts Club. We started in 1964 as a small theatre company created by a group of local artists in a 150-seat theatre located upstairs at the corner of Seymour and Davie, and named for the watering hole that inhabited the down-stairs space, the Arts Club. We grew from there; fi rst with the opening of the
WELCOMEvery theatre in which you sit tonight, the Granville Island Stage, in 1979 (and later, the Revue Stage), followed by the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage in 1998. And then, in 2015, we opened the Gold-corp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, fulfi lling our long-held desire to have a purpose-built theatre at which we could incubate new works and bring them to the stage.
So, as you can see, change is in our DNA. And it will continue to be with the arrival of Incoming Artistic Director Ashlie Corcoran, who begins her transi-tion into the role during the run of this show. We asked her about her feelings on the move home, to B.C., to artistically guide us in our next chapter: “I am ec-static to be joining the Arts Club Theatre Company, an organization I deeply care about, in a city that I love. I am excited to immerse myself in Vancouver’s cul-tural community, build on Bill Millerd’s phenomenal legacy, and collaborate with Peter and the Arts Club’s fantastic staff and board. My vision is for the Arts Club to be internationally renowned, driving the development of local theatrical talent and voices, while deeply engaging with its community, audience, and stakehold-ers. This will be a homecoming for me—born and bred in White Rock, B.C., I am thrilled to once again live in my home province, close to my family. I can’t wait to get started!”
So, here’s to change! And here’s to the season! We wish you all—donors, funders, subscribers, and patrons—the best of the season, and a life lived in love…because it’s you that we choose. Enjoy the show.

What a joy to bring our Onegin to Granville Island! After Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata—a play about disconnection—we wanted to immerse ourselves in something about connection, a story that could challenge our sometimes corseted Canadian sensibilities. Something where the audience could swoon and get swept away. Something full of grand gestures, dance, and light. Something honest, but also modern. Because in the
age of the cynic, where does the romantic fi t? We adapted freely from Pushkin’s original and Tchaikovsky’s opera, to give audiences the visceral experience of unrequited love. The characters’ missed opportunities show us what happens when we don’t embrace love when it comes. What it looks and feels like to turn away from its vitality and beauty. Ultimately, the show is our celebration of love. Our love of the theatre, our love for performing, our love for making things together, our love of the audience, and your connection to what we create. Thank you for joining us for either the fi rst time, or returning to fall in love. We love that you’re here getting carried away with us.
