This week we ventured into a place some people wouldn’t class as Brisbane, but here at BW we do.

We believe just because certain areas are covered by different councils does not mean they are any less worthy of being covered as a Brisbane suburb.

So with this believe we headed to Cleveland, out in the Redlands City Council and discovered a suburb that was very quiet and somewhat ‘old’.

We also got all rugged up for Winter, and decided to pull together the top ten tips for interviews as soo many people out there are looking for jobs, or looking to change.

As usual if you want to get involved, email us at [email protected]

3/. Lighthouse Restaurant / 237 Shore Street North, Cleveland

Now Cleveland is a part of the Redlands City Council, and many consider that the suburbs that aren’t a part of Brisbane City Council aren’t Brisbane.

But Brisbane Weekly, we disagree. We believe Logan, Ipswich, Redlands, Moreton Bay regions are all part of Brisbane. If those people were overseas and were asked where they were from, they would say Brisbane.

So with this belief we headed out to cover Cleveland for this week’s issue. Cleveland is on the water, with the big estate, Raby Bay (that is apparently sinking), the point with a lighthouse, home of Brisbane’s best Christmas Eve party, and the passage to local getaway, Stradbroke Island.

Pretty nice place with lots of little food outlets, cafes, and a MASSIVE library. No major shopping centres, easy

parking, and a bit of an ‘old’ vibe to it, Cleveland seems a pretty easy place to live.

No real hipster, cool vibe but definitely pleasant, and it seemed very quiet. Food at CC’s was fantastic and a stroll at Raby Bay was relaxing.

1 WhAt ArE your WEAkNEssEs?This is the most dreaded question of all. Handle it by minimizing your weakness and emphasizing your

strengths. Stay away from personal qualities and concentrate on professional traits: “I am always working on improving my communication skills to be a more effective presenter. I recently joined Toastmasters, which I find very helpful.”

2 Why shouLD WE hirE you?Summarize your experiences: “With five years’ experience working in the financial industry and my

proven record of saving the company money, I could make a big difference in your company. I’m confident I would be a great addition to your team.”

3 Why Do you WANt to Work hErE?The interviewer is listening for an answer that indicates you’ve given this some thought and are not sending

out resumes just because there is an opening. For example, “I’ve selected key companies whose mission statements are in line with my values, where I know I could be excited about what the company does, and this company is very high on my list of desirable choices.”

4 WhAt ArE your goALs?Sometimes it’s best to talk about short-term and intermediate goals rather than locking yourself into

the distant future. For example, “My immediate goal is to get a job in a growth-oriented company. My long-term goal will depend on where the company goes. I hope to eventually grow into a position of responsibility.”

5 Why DiD you LEAVE (ArE you LEAViNg)your JoB?If you’re unemployed, state your reason for leaving

in a positive context: “I managed to survive two rounds of corporate downsizing, but the third round was a 20 percent reduction in the workforce, which included me.”If you are employed, focus on what you want in your next job: “After two years, I made the decision to look for a company that is team-focused, where I can add my experience.”

6 WhEN WErE you Most sAtisFiED iNyour JoB?The interviewer wants to know what motivates you. If

you can relate an example of a job or project when you were excited, the interviewer will get an idea of your preferences. “I was very satisfied in my last job, because I worked directly with the customers and their problems; that is an important part of the job for me.”

7 WhAt CAN you Do For us thAt othEr CANDiDAtEs CAN’t?What makes you unique? This will take an assessment

of your experiences, skills and traits. Summarize concisely: “I have a unique combination of strong technical skills, and the ability to build strong customer relationships. This allows me to use my knowledge and break down information to be more user-friendly.”

8 WhAt ArE thrEE PositiVE thiNgs your LAst Boss WouLD sAy ABout you? It’s time to pull out your old performance appraisals

and boss’s quotes. This is a great way to brag about yourself through someone else’s words: “My boss has told me that I am the best designer he has ever had. He knows he can rely on me, and he likes my sense of humor.”

9 WhAt sALAry ArE you sEEkiNg?It is to your advantage if the employer tells you the range first. Prepare by knowing the going rate in your

area, and your bottom line or walk-away point. One possible answer would be: “I am sure when the time comes, we can agree on a reasonable amount. In what range do you typically pay someone with my background?”

10 iF you WErE AN ANiMAL, WhiCh oNE WouLD you WANt to BE?Interviewers use this type of psychological

question to see if you can think quickly. If you answer “a bunny,” you will make a soft, passive impression. If you answer “a lion,” you will be seen as aggressive. What type of personality would it take to get the job done? What impression do you want to make?

Too many job seekers stumble through interviews as if the questions are coming out of left field. But many interview questions are to be expected. So study this list, plan your answers ahead of time and you’ll be ready to deliver them with confidence.

Reader Melitta was up for a complete change, and wanted to add some colour into her life.

For such a change, we were in safe hands with salon owner, Salvatore Canino.

With a gorgeous ombre, and then a purple tone on tone over the top, Salvatore was able to create the vibrant, on trend look Melitta now has.

Jaffa’s is located on Stanley Street at the Gabba, close to the Mater hospital.

I knew this was going to be an eye opening experience so I started the week of hard core

with some Motley Crew and their song, Girls Girls Girls… OMG at times I could barely understand what he was saying. I also downloaded Ushers album… and loved it!

Then there was some random tunes from the alternative playlists on iTunes, some from the blues and jazz genres… Discovery of the week for me was Clare Bowditch (AMAZING) and yes I am aware she has been around forever and I am uncool and

only listen to mainstream stations like Nova.

I then spent a day listening only to classical music… On this day, I nearly crashed twice, was unbelievably bored and had to fight myself from flicking stations. I really tried to appreciate this but couldnt… I HATED it more than anything else Ive listened to… yes even more than Rebecca Blacks Its Friday!

Findings: I listen to all types of

music already and wasnt really aware of this. I love songs with great lyrics, no matter how they are sung. I will always be a slow r’n’b junkie at heart, but dependant on the mood, Ill listen to anything with a good message.

I will however appreciate the music more around me and try to listen to things other than mainstream on occasion.

A WEEK OF… LISTENING TO MUSIC I HAD NEVER HEARD BEFORE

by Rebecca Grugan

Page 23: BW 160613 05

So in previous issues I have admitted that I have a little bit of a shopping addiction, and this morning whilst I was trawling the internet for items I (am not allowed) to purchase I got to thinking…

I would love to support my local businesses, would love to support Australian businesses but sometimes the cost of what I purchase within Australia is nearly triple that of which I could pay on eBay and lets be honest, who can justify that sort of mark up?

The best example of this is something that happened a couple of months ago, I was visiting with my parents who live in northern NSW and there is a lovely little children’s shop in town which has the most devine little treasures that you can rarely find elsewhere. Which is why I never stopped to think when I saw a pair of zebra print slippers with a green pom pom on them. All I thought was “I MUST have them for my daughter!”, I was slightly alarmed by the $35 price tag (I KNOW, but I already told you I have a problem!) but paid for them and took them home in their brown paper bag (after totally Instagraming a pic…of course).

So I am on eBay a couple of weeks later, just looking around for cute baby stuff, most of it is from Hong Kong with free postage, you can’t go past it! Anywho, scrolling down and what do I see? Only the exact same pair of slippers…and how much do you think they are? If you said $5 with free postage, you would be correct!

And for research’s sake, I went ahead and purchased them and they are the exact same product…ok that was a slight lie about the research part, my child has large feet and the original ones didn’t fit so I ordered a larger size :)

I understand that businesses need to make a profit in order to survive and I understand the pressures that overseas purchasing puts on them, but sometimes I think people need to look at the consumers point of view. We are no longer the stupid little shopper with a credit card that stores can take advantage of, we now have a plethora of options and we like to do our research, and unfortunately marking your prices up 100% on items we can purchase directly from what are probably your suppliers won’t cut it. A lot of consumers aren’t in the position to lay down heaps of money for frivolous items, home loans, school fees, cost of living increasing, you name it it is costing us too - so unfortunately, we have to turn to cheaper sources to get our fix.

And unfortunately good ol’ Australia Post increasing postage costs by 30% to try and get in on the booming online shopping craze is not going to help the situation. Australia businesses will now struggle to offer free shipping as it will cut into their profits.

So it is a lose/lose situation for Australian businesses and consumers will continue to feel guilty for making online purchases from overseas companies simply because they are so much cheaper for the exact same products.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am not sure that there is going to be a viable solution to the situation anytime soon.

And PS Today Tonight, we really don’t need you to make us feel any worse than we already do ok?

Toodles x
