The North American woodworking industry should continue to prosper,

with the outlook for cabinetry, furniture, architectural millwork and retail

fixtures projected to grow. This bodes well for dimension and wood com-

ponents manufacturers that supply products to these segments.

A recent survey by more than 200 component and dimension producers

found the vast majority supply products to the residential market, primarily cabi-

netry for kitchen, bath and home organization/closets. Supplies to the commer-

cial market are not shabby either, with contract furniture, commercial cabinetry

and building products, including millwork for windows, also getting high marks.

Sales and business performance information was compiled in the second an-

nual Wood Components Benchmark Study, conducted online February through

March by the Wood Component Manufacturers Association, the Wood Products

Manufacturers Association and Woodworking Network.

With participants able to select multiple industries, of those that responded

to the query, 90% sell into residential cabinetry, and 60% to residential

furniture, compared to 66% for commercial cabinetry, and 46% contract

furniture. Of the remaining markets, 59% had sales for building products,

60% decorative/specialty and 23% provided some level of industrial products.

A drill-down of some of the product offerings is below.

For information about the study or the sponsoring associations, contact the

Wood Component Manufacturers Association at WCMA.com, and the Wood

Products Manufacturers Association at WPMA.org.

Second annual benchmark study includes information on top markets and product sales, plus business trends.

Advocacy, networking and industry promotions are just some of the ways the Wood Component Manufacturers Association helps North American producers grow their business.

WCMA Membership – Now more important than ever!

If you are a manufacturer of wood components

or dimension stock, membership in the Wood

Component Manufacturers Association is now

more important than ever. The WCMA was founded

in 1929 with the goal of establishing and maintain-

ing specifications and commercial standards for the

hardwood dimension manufacturing industry, and to

aid in the development of the industry. As member-

ship grew, the association committed to becoming

a progressive, nationally-recognized association fo-

cused on meeting the needs of its members. A list of

WCMA members begins on page 13 of this guide.

WCMA membership involves many things, but first

and foremost it provides access to a wide range of

industry experts. Your colleagues are often your best

source for in-depth insight and ideas. WCMA gives you

the opportunity to connect with industry professionals

across the United States and Canada, and members

share openly, freely, and with great enthusiasm. In ad-

dition, the association offers the following to members:

Fall Conference & Plant Tour Event: Each year,

the WCMA hosts a Fall Conference and Plant Tour

Event. By touring dimension and component manu-

facturing facilities, members see the latest technology

at work, witness working solutions to common prob-

lems, and exchange information with seasoned coun-

terparts. Held in the fall each year, this event enables

members to conduct their own field research as well

as gather a host of money-making, money-saving

ideas. See page 8 for information on the 2019 event.

Spring Annual Meeting: The WCMA has reintro-

duced the WCMA Spring Annual Meeting for members

and Technology Partners. To learn more about the

2020 event, see page 8.

One-Day Plant Tour Regional Event: In 2018,

the WCMA hosted its first One-Day Plant Tour Re-

gional Event. This event focuses on a specific region

and is short enough to be out of the office only one

day, yet still see advanced manufacturing plants.

Our 2019 event will take place in June, in Lexing-

ton, Kentucky. Visit WCMA.com for information.

Get New Business: Sales inquiries from com-

ponent buyers are received by the WCMA office on

a regular basis. The WCMA’s Member Match™

Program is a system that provides prospective buy-

ers with a list of all WCMA members who can pro-

duce the specific component products they need.

The service is free of charge to component buyers

and WCMA members, and can be accessed on our

website WCMA.com in the Source Guide area.

National and International Promotion: The

WCMA recognizes the need for increased promotion

and has increased its marketing efforts for members

and the wood component industry as a whole. Ex-

hibiting at trade shows throughout the world, partici-

pating in specialized industry events and seminars,

publishing the Wood Components Buyer’s Guide, advertising in major woodworking magazines, and

maintaining a comprehensive website are some of

the ways the WCMA is promoting its members and

the industry. The WCMA also receives a number of

sales leads through our website and trade shows,

and these leads are then passed on to members.

Industry Support: Financial support is given to the

Hardwood Federation which serves at the hardwood

industry’s advocacy voice on Capitol Hill, as well as the

American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) which pro-

motes American hardwoods globally.

Members’ Website: The newly designed WCMA

website WCMA.com features a simplified design,

improved functionality and more content to keep

members and visitors up-to-date on the latest news in

the secondary wood manufacturing industry. The site

is a resource where members can update their online

profile, register for meetings, keep current on industry

issues and initiatives, “chat” with other members, and

more! Comprehensive and easy to navigate, it serves

as a one-stop site for all the information you need on

the industry, including the WCMA Labor Relations

Bulletin, Legislative News, Virginia Tech Housing Re-

ports, and other important Industry News and Events.

Industry Standards: The WCMA establishes and

maintains the “Rules and Specifications for Dimen-

sion and Woodwork.” A necessary addition to any

plant, the Rulebook covers dimension and component

grading rules, tolerances, and claim procedures for

domestic and export trade. It also serves as a guide-

line for buyers of dimension and component products

when specifying their component products. The pock-

et-sized Rulebook is available for $10.00 per copy to

non-members and is available free to members.

WCMA Mission Statement & Objectives: The Wood Component Manufacturers Association

advances and promotes the interests of the North

American wood products industry through interac-

tive and innovative manufacturing solutions. The

objectives of the WCMA are as follows:

• Promote a friendly exchange of ideas among

those engaged in the dimension and component

manufacturing business.

• Develop and promote a general demand for the

industry’s products and services.

• Collect and distribute useful economic and

technical information concerning industry trends and

developments.

• Serve as a business referral clearinghouse by re-

sponding to inquiries from dimension and component

buyers and passing this information on to members.

• Conduct seminars and meetings that will satisfy

the educational needs of our members.

• Establish and maintain standard rules and spec-

ifications for the dimension & components industry.

• Cooperate with other wood product trade as-

sociations and appropriate government agencies to

promote and protect the interests of the industry.

As a company in the wood components industry,

one of the wisest investments you can make is mem-

bership in the WCMA. To take advantage of these

many member benefits, visit WCMA.com today and

fill out the membership application. You can also con-

tact the WCMA office with any questions.

The WCMA offers a range of opportunities to help members keep pace with the fast-changing wood components industry.

WCMA What WCMA has to offer

The wood components market is changing at a

rapid pace, with material options/products, as

well as the fierce technology surge. The Wood

Component Manufacturers Association has an ac-

tive role in bringing people together to brainstorm, be

introduced to new technology and ideas, and expand

the influence of the industry moving forward.

Networking, international exposure, and growing

our future leaders is at the core of what we try to ac-

complish. I want to take this opportunity to share the

experiences and opportunities WCMA has to offer.

The WCMA helps bring us together to share expe-

riences and knowledge about the industry segments

in a non-competitive atmosphere. The association

works as a strong facilitator, gathering great wood-

working companies and pulling innovative visionar-

ies together to make the entire industry stronger

and more successful. And perhaps the number one

benefit of WCMA membership is the multitude of net-

working opportunities provided throughout the year,

including the European Plant Tour and the Fall Conference & Plant Tour events.

The European Plant Tour event, held March 2018,

was an amazing opportunity. Members and Tech

Partners on the tour all had positive takeaways.

Sponsored by Stiles Machinery and Pollmeier Inc. the

event included visits to highly automated factories

engaged in panel and solid wood processing, plus

tours of the HOMAG factory and Pollmeier sawmills.

The combination of the plant tours, networking with

members, and seeing how other businesses operate

was truly an incredible experience.

It is evident that utilizing automation to meet cus-

tomer’s needs, production times, to work around an

unreliable workforce, and efficiently produce the qual-

ity products is the direction our industry is heading.

In the high-paced world of on-the-go customers,

short lead times, high-tech processes and a feeling

that “we are just maxed out,” the WCMA provides

relief to members. Outsourcing wood products and

sourcing items that generate overhead and consume

valuable time that could be better used elsewhere is

what the WCMA is all about. In order to do this, we

need to continue to grow our membership and edu-

cate the next generation of workers.

WCMA provides a platform for wood industry lead-

ers to consult, share ideas, and plan for the future. If

you are interested in locating a supplier or would like

information about the WCMA, visit WCMA.com or

contact Amy Snell, Executive Director, at 651-332-

On tap for 2019 are plant tours, conferences and more networking opportunities.

WCMA Networking: Conferences & plant tours

Each year, the WCMA conducts its flagship event, the Fall Conference & Plant Tour Event. The Fall Conference presents an excellent opportunity

for WCMA members to network and have open discussion on common con-

cerns. Attendees also tour the production facilities of several dimension, compo-

nent, cabinet, furniture, millwork, and related woodworking companies. These plant

tours provide attendees a unique opportunity to observe innovative woodworking

manufacturing operations and discover new manufacturing techniques, exchange

ideas, and learn about alternative manufacturing methods. Everyone comes away

with at least one good idea that can be implemented in their own plants.

The WCMA is very excited to be partnering with the Wood Moulding & Mill-

work Producers Association (MMPA) for the 2019 Fall Conference, Tech Ed, and Plant Tour Event. The two associations are joining forces to offer attend-

ees expanded educational opportunities, increased networking, personalized

meetings with suppliers, and unique plant tours. The event will be held Sept.

22-25, at the Astor Crowne Plaza in New Orleans, Louisiana. The event will give

attendees an excellent opportunity to learn how industry professionals stay up-

dated in areas such as woodworking machinery, equipment, tooling, supplies,

software and overall business solutions.

The 2019 Fall Conference, Tech Ed and Plant Tour Event will be open to

member companies of either association, as well as their industry suppliers.

Registration opens in May; visit WCMA.com for more information.

Networking with Tech Partners This year, WCMA Tech Partners will have the opportunity to participate in Pro-ductivity Information Exchange (PIE) sessions. These sessions match

customers with suppliers and allows for dedicated time to educate attendees on

their specific needs. Each Tech Partner is guaranteed two appointments with

manufacturing members when they register early. There will also be two recep-

tions which will connect leading providers of woodworking machinery, equip-

ment, supplies, software and other business solutions with WCMA members.

A listing of WCMA Technology Partners begins on page 10 of this Buyer’s

Guide. These companies are a great source for all your woodworking machin-

ery, tooling, software, and business solutions.

The WCMA Education and Programs Committee has been working hard to

ensure that there is something for everyone, so be sure to make plans now to

have Plant Managers and other key personnel in attendance. Program details

and registration for the WCMA Fall Conference & Plant Tour event will be

available in May. For more information about participating in this event, contact

the WCMA office at [email protected], or visit WCMA.com today.

2020 Spring European Plant TourWCMA will be hosting its third European Plant Tour event in 2020. Attendees

who have participated in this event in the past report such positive takeaways

and were impressed by the quality of the plant tours.

Steve Gerber, with Gerber Wood Products, stated “I found the quality of the

plant tours to be excellent. They offered a diverse view into the European phi-

losophy of manufacturing by utilizing more automation and technology, replacing

aging equipment quickly, and utilizing a wide range of wood composite materials.

I saw levels of automation in action that I had often dreamt of but never believed

were being applied in real woodshop applications. I left my week in Germany

inspired and ready to apply aspects of what I learned in my own business.”

You will want to participate in 2020. Plans are still being finalized, so be sure

to visit WCMA.com for more information.
