In 1758, Nathaniel T. Butter�eld founded a merchant-trading �rm which in 1858 became Bermuda’s �rst bank. By the late 1800s, the Bank was supporting a developing tourism industry by lending money to innkeepers, retailers and companies building the Island’s infrastructure. In 1904, with the equivalent of about US$120,000 in assets, the Bank of N.T. Butter�eld & Son was incorporated by an Act of Parliament.
