Many Butler County residents hearthe name Butler County Chamber ofCommerce but dont fully understandwhat the organization is all about. Most people probably know that ithas something to do with businesses, but beyond that their knowledgeabout the actual workings of theorganization is not extensive.

While The Edge, the newsletter of

the chamber, is not a publicationthat reaches the average home, theJanuary publication contains a mes-sage that is instructive regarding theorganizations mission, goals and, justas important, how far the chamberhas come over the past half-decadeor so.

The message also stresses theimportant point that not only is thechamber working for the bettermentof county businesses, but its alsoworking for the betterment of thecommunity at large.

People who recognize the impor-tance of a vibrant business commu-nity as it relates to their lives shouldbe pleased to know that the chambernot only is working hard to maintainits status as the leading business

organization in the county, with theanswers and connections that busi-nesses need. But it also has commit-ted itself to looking into the future sobusinesses can be at the forefront ofwhatever innovations and newopportunities come about.

Said another way, the chamber isnot standing still, and thats good forcounty businesses and the peoplewho are dependent upon those busi-nesses successes probably every-one who lives here.

Businesses that have chosen not tobecome a member should rethinkthat decision, in light of all that thechamber is attempting to do andwhat it can do for them.

The message in this months Edge, written by Stan Kosciuszko, presi-

dent, contains a thought that is valu-able not only to the chambers mis-sion but also applies to other ele-ments of this county:

Lets never settle for being whatwe are, but continue to work towardsmaking it what we should be.

With that thought working as thecornerstone for the organization, thechamber is seeking additional waysto reach out to help its members.

Quotes from Kosciuszkos messageare instructive regarding how far theorganization has come.

Recognizing that an informed andeducated business community willbe stronger and more effective, ourboard established an aggressiveschedule of educational seminars

and professional skills training,Kosciuszko wrote. By providingfirst-class avenues for knowledge andbusiness skills, we elevated ourorganization to new heights. Throughour numerous partnership activitieswith Butler County Community Col-lege and Slippery Rock University,we have expanded member benefitsto new heights. Our Legislative

Action Committee quickly becamethe go to group for business opin-ion on numerous issues. A new rap-port was developed with local, stateand federal legislators, providing anatmosphere of mutual respect andcooperative interaction.

Collaboration has been one ofour main accomplishments, as ourChamber realizes that we do notexist in an isolated bubble. Ouractivities intertwine with numerousother organizations, and that ourexpertise is not only respected, butcan serve as a valuable resource toaccomplish regional goals. Our affil-iate program is the mainstay of thisbelief, as we continue to administerand assist Leadership Butler County,Butler Downtown, New Visions for

Butler and the Slippery Rock Busi-ness Association. Our affiliation withthe Butler Human Resource Associ-ation has provided unique opportu-nity to our membership.

Collaboration on another levelhas been achieved through ourefforts both legislatively and com-munity-based in partnership with theButler County Tourism and Conven-tion Bureau, the Community Devel-opment Corporation of Butler Coun-ty and the United Way of ButlerCounty. We have actively maintainedparticipation in the Regional Corri-dor Alliance and assisted with theEconomic Summit. As a member ofthe Pennsylvania Chamber of Busi-ness and Industry and the AlleghenyConference, we are kept in numer-ous loops to inform and involve ourmembership.

This is an era of fast changes inhow businesses operate and an eraof great challenges not only locallybased but from sources hundredsand thousands of miles away.

For Butler County, a vibrant cham-ber of commerce isnt an option; itsa necessity.

To its credit, the chamber is work-ing hard at being what it should be,the best business organization notonly in Butler County, but also in theregion. The people of this countyshould be impressed with what it istrying to do.
