But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.
Matthew 13:23

FIFTEENT H S U NDAY IN ORDIN ARY TIME
15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
Once again, we find ourselves voluntarily “locking inside” as we endeavor to stay healthy and safe from COVID-19. This morning, I celebrated our 4th funeral for a 100-year old woman who succumbed to this insidious disease. We pray daily for an end to this global pandemic and for all of those who are on the front lines assisting the sick and dying. Indeed, many parishes have been affected by this virus and some seminarians from our Archdiocese, as well as Archbishop Emeritus Fiorenza and retired Bishop Rizzotto, are suffering from COVID-19. Sadly, our Archbishop has been admitted to the hospital. I ask that you kindly pray for these individuals and for all who suffer. May a cure and a vaccine come soon.
On Thursday, July 2nd, Fr. Trung Nguyen, the former Rector of St. Mary’s Seminary joined our parish staff. He was ordained 26 years ago and has spent the past many years serving in seminary formation. Anticipating becoming a pastor for the first time, Fr. Trung will be receiving an assignment as pastor most likely in July 2021. He is not “officially” assigned to St. Michael the Archangel but will live in residence at the rectory. He will be taking a well-deserved sabbatical and also will be attending a 30-day retreat while he is with us. Fr. Nguyen happily offered to assist with Masses and sacraments during this fiscal year. Although you cannot meet him in person, you will “see” him via live stream Masses, and I pray, begin to know him through his celebration of the Eucharist. Please join me in welcoming Fr. Trung to St. Michael the Archangel Parish!
In today’s readings, “Creation awaits with eager expectation” to “be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God.” If there was ever a time when creation is eager to be set free from sin which leads humankind to ultimate corruption, it is now. We see this in the world and city where we live. It is easy to put our/my needs first rather than to see the good and grace in helping others. Yet when we step aside, letting others go ahead of us and allow charity to be at the core of our hearts and our ultimate goal, we share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. One example I see clearly is observing people debate/argue their “right” to not wear a face mask in public, or when attending Mass, forgetting that the most loving response we can offer as God’s children is to put the needs of our brothers and sisters before our own. God calls us out of our own desires, out of our own selfishness and asks us to become the “rich soil” where His seed can be sown as we hear His Word and understand it. I pray that our actions bear great fruit and that the yield of such a harvest stands against sin and corruption so that we can truly live as children of God!
God Bless You One and All!

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
SUNDAY READING REFLECTIONSFirst Reading:In this passage, the prophet Isaiah reminds people of the power of God’s word. God leads the people in their work of rebuilding and ensures that their work will be brought to completion. How would life without God’s word be different?
The Gospel:Farmers in Jesus’ day couldn’t test the quality of the soil in their fields to know the best places to plant. They also scattered their seeds before plowing instead of after. These methods are far less precise than contemporary farming practices. Some seeds ended up in places where they couldn’t grow. In the parable, Jesus is the sower and his ministry, especially his teaching, is the seed. However, in the interpretation, the seeds represent people and their different responses to Jesus. The followers of Jesus might have begun interpreting the parable this way in an attempt to explain why some people turned away from Jesus. How might Jesus have felt as people reacted negatively to him and his ministry?

MASS INTENTIONS & READINGS
Our Lady of Mount CarmelThursday, July 16
The Carmelites were known from early on as “Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” The title suggests that they saw Mary not only as “mother,” but also as “sister.” The word sister is a reminder that Mary is very close to us. She is the daughter of God and therefore can help us be authentic daughters and sons of God. She also can help us grow in appreciation of being sisters and brothers to one another. She leads us to a new realization that all human beings belong to the family of God. When such a conviction grows, there is hope that the human race can find its way to peace.Source: franciscanmedia.org

1,055 calls to St. Michael's Charity Line
757 individuals helped
$107,839 provided for food, rent, and utilities
The assistance we have provided to families within our area during the past 3 ½ months has exceeded what we would normally provide during an entire year! Because of the continuing need of families with no income, we anticipate spending our remaining funds during the upcoming weeks. All of our funds go directly to helping those in need, and none are used for administration.
We would like to thank you for your generosity in sharing your treasure in recent months, and we would also like to thank those of you who volunteered your time, especially in helping us care for Spanishspeaking families.
In the first months of COVID-19, St. Michael’s SVdP Conference did our best to keep up with the large increase in calls for assistance from both English and Spanish speaking friends-in-need (our “Friends”). However, by May, the increasingly significant needs of Latino neighbors within our Parish boundaries had surpassed our ability to timely respond.
Father Wayne has been very supportive and reached out to our parish family during the Masses. With God’s grace, you answered and provided. Not only did the Conference receive many generous donations but we also increased our bilingual volunteers nearly three-fold! St. Michael’s Conference now has eleven bilingual volunteers assisting the Vincentians to answer the calls of our Latino Friends and get them help in a timely manner.
Can you imagine being without food, or the ability to pay your rent? Then, can you imagine calling an organization for help and not receiving a response because of a lack of bilingual volunteers? Well, thanks to these volunteers from our Parish who have come forward to assist in responding to Spanish calls, that will not happen. Our Friends in need can call upon us for help, and we can answer them quickly.
The new volunteers demonstrated a strong desire to do something for vulnerable families who might be undergoing more significant hardships during COVID-19 than they were. As one volunteer stated:“What an extraordinary spiritual experience these past two weeks have been for me. I have been moved by the predicament of our friends in need but even more so by their dignity and fortitude in confronting an unprecedented crisis. I’ve felt the presence of the Holy Spirit closer than I have in a very long time, and in that, I know they have helped me much more than I may have helped them.”
We thank God for blessing our St. Michael’s SVdP Conference with the support of your time and treasure! If you would like to become a Vincentian, please contact John Reed at (713) 702-6556. If you would like to make a donation, please visit the St. Michael website at stmichaelchurch.net/st-vincent-de-paul-society, or place a check with a notation for St. Michael SVdP in the weekend collection, or leave it at the Parish Office.
Thank you for your time and treasure!
