My first example i Klädoteket, a fashion library located in Göteborg which is owned by two entrepreneurs. They offer customers the possibility to subscribe to their concept and then use the garments they have in their collection. To make it more attractive Klädoteket has decided to strive for a more fashion oriented collection. To reach this they collaborate with upp coming designers. They also organize different fashion events and this spring they will have a fashion festival, fashion after works and a design competition.

The second example is also a fashion library, but it is slightly different. The Wardrobe is located here in the Textile Fashion Center and is organized as an association with volunteers. So while Klädoteket is a business, the Wardrobe is based on volunteers.

The fourth example is the collaboration between Myrorna, the charity organization, and Indiska (the retailer). Myrorna collects a lot of second hand clothes in Sweden and and in this collaboration they are a supplier of second hand jeans which is sold in 16 of Indiska’s shops, for example in Gothenburg. The collaboration is described as a win-win project where Myrorna is able to sell more jeans (10 % more) and where Indiska has the possibility to adds jeans to the collection.

Presentation Notes
There are three things that these examples or companies have common: it’s about shopping, textiles and they all in one way or another claim that the world will be much better if the consumers buy, use and recycle their products. But is this really the case?

Now we are at the core. What kind of questions can you work with in your thesis? It is noon only the question of if the concept is sustainable or not. In what way is it sustainable or not. In an environmental perspective, an economic perspective or a social perspective? How do they try to create a value that will attract the consumer? How do they organize their concept or business? From a management perspective, from a leadership perspective, from a retail perspective at the shop? You can also investigate how they collaborate with other actors to organize the concept. A last example is how they communicate their sustainability or their organization. This is just a few examples to give you some ideas about what can ba done. I think that it is better if you go out there, visit them and then finds a problem that you want to investigate and I do not want to limit you.

So my question to you in the end is what do you want to do with your thesis? Stay in the library and study the history of retail management or investigate the future together with me, Sara and Louise at Klädoteket and make the retail apparel industry a bit greener? If you are interested in the later, please contact me and we can have a discussion about the possibilities that you have. As I have presented, I have at least four cases ready for you so do not hesitate.
