Our degrees
All courses in the Business Schoolinvolve the study of organisations,their management and the changingenvironment in which they operate.While the precise blend of subjects
studied depends on the particularcourse, each degree prepares you fora career in business, managementand finance, as well as developingyour skills in qualitative andquantitative analysis, critical thinking,oral and written presentation,information technology and groupworking.
All courses also include modules studying the roleof entrepreneurship in organisations and mostconsider the impact of business ethics on strategyformulation and decision-making.
The Business School offers a variety of singlehonours degrees. Each of these courses has aparticular focus, while offering a multidisciplinaryunderstanding of key business and managementdisciplines.
Whichever degree you choose, you will also have
the chance to select a number of optional modulesalongside your core subjects, enabling you totailor your degree to your particular interests.The range of subjects is extensive and includesmodules in accounting and finance, business law,entrepreneurship, marketing, information systems,organisational theory, operations management,industrial economics, strategic management,human resource management and business ethics.For the majority of programmes, options can alsobe selected from other schools in the University.
At Nottingham, you will study under a modularsystem, normally taking 12 modules eachacademic year, spread over two semesters withexams in January and May/June. On a numberof modules, you will be required to completecoursework throughout the academic year, some
of which is likely to be group work. Lectures formthe basis of our teaching method, supported bya variety of additional teaching including tutorials,computer labs, workshops, simulations, casestudies, presentations, and online support.

BSc Accountancy Flying StartIf you know you want to become an ICAEWChartered Accountant, then the Flying StartDegree Programme could be your fastest wayto get there. Its a collaboration between theBusiness School, the Institute of Chartered
Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW)and PwC. Its called the Flying Start DegreeProgramme because thats what it does: it givesyou a flying start towards becoming an ICAEWChartered Accountant. Embedded within theprogramme are paid work placements with PwCand the programme is a great way to kick startyour career in accountancy.
During your first year you will study full timewith the Business School, taking 120 credits.During your second, third and fourth years, you
will study for one semester with the BusinessSchool and the other semester will be spent onwork placement with PwC. You will study 80credits of modules during each of these yearsand in recognition of this, you will pay a reducedUniversity fee.
Because this is a small, highly competitiveprogramme that involves accelerated progresstoward the professional qualification from ICAEWas well as studying for a degree, there is a longerapplication process. Once you have applied
through UCAS you will be considered for one ofthe assessment days we hold in December toMarch. If your application for BSc Accountancyis unsuccessful the School will automaticallyconsider you for BSc Finance, Accounting andManagement instead.

Professional development refers notonly to your academic progressionbut also to the development of yourbusiness and employability skills.
As the Skills and Development Manager, my mainaim is to ensure that you settle into the School asquickly and easily as possible and to understandwhat is expected of you during your course.
I am heavily involved in your induction sessionsin the first week and I will meet with you all onthe Professional Development for Leadershipand Management Programmethat you will alltake in the first year. This programme will aid yourtransition into working independently at universityand covers a variety of academic and practicalbusiness skills. Each week this will focus on adifferent skill, including writing skills for businessand academia, referencing and how to avoidplagiarism, using media for business, professionalconduct, leadership and management skills. Inaddition to these formal sessions, you are morethan welcome to book individual consultationswith me when the need arises throughout yourtime at university.
In your first semester, we run a group challengeas well as an essay competition. The essaycompetition provides you with an opportunity toobtain feedback on your work before it countstowards any grades and helps you understand thestandards you need in order to achieve a good
degree. The winners are also awarded with somevery generous prizes!
I try to ensure that anyone who has an issue withtheir studies or who just wants a chat and somereassurance has someone approachable theycan call on. I am available to see small groups orindividuals on an appointment basis or, if my dooris open, you can just drop in when passing andalways be assured of a warm welcome.

Internships and placementsInternships or other work experience during yoursummer and Easter breaks allow you to prepareyourself for your career after graduation. Ourexperience with our partners in our ProfessionalDevelopment Programmes facilitates this process
and opens up opportunities for you. The BusinessSchool strongly promotes internship opportunitiesand encourages you to apply.

Through the STEP programme and Year inIndustry, students have also obtained placementswith small and medium-sized companies and theSchool will also support students who want totake a year out to complete a year-long internship.
Voluntary work, societies andexternal competitionsThe Business School actively encourages you tofocus on personal and professional developmentwhich includes participating in volunteering,societies and sports - these are essential forenhancing skills and improving your careerprospects. There are hundreds of opportunities toget involved at Nottingham.
The Business School CommunityEngagement Programmelinks you withprojects and local community organisations. Itprovides you with the opportunity to put yourbusiness knowledge and skills into practicewhile engaging with, and supporting, your
local community. The Community EngagementCertificate is also a module for the UniversitysNottingham Advantage Award.
If you are interested in voluntary work, theStudents Unionalso runs Student CommunityAction (SCA). It has links with over 100organisations and you can volunteer on a regularbasis or take part in one-off events.
The School works very closely with theNottingham Business Society and theEconomics and Finance Society to support
students interactions with corporate bodiesand further develop their employability skills andopportunities.
The School also works closely with theNottingham Enactus team. Enactus is acommunity of student, academic and businessleaders committed to using the power ofentrepreneurial action to transform lives andshape a better more sustainable world. It holdsannual national and world competitions, in whichthe Nottingham team has achieved outstandingsuccess and has represented the UK at the
World Cup finals in Toronto, New York, Paris andSingapore.
Student competitions can offer an invaluable learning experience with opportunities tonetwork and gain contacts. I would encourage everyone to get involved in them.

We recognise that most of youwill require some level of personaland academic support beyondformal methods of teaching. Whenyou arrive, you will be allocated a
personal tutor who will be able toadvise you on personal and academicmatters throughout your studies.
You will also receive dedicated support fromour Student Support Officer and our Skills andDevelopment Manager who can provide specialisthelp when the need arises. While we alwaysencourage you to discuss any difficulties youare facing with your academic personal tutor,we believe that our specialist staff offer moreappropriate and professional levels of supportthan most university departments.
The Business Schools Student Support Officer,Teresa Bee, is available to advise and counsel youon any areas of concern relating to your studiesor otherwise. In association with other appropriatestaff and agencies, Teresa helps students thatare experiencing personal or medical problemsor students with a disability. Any matters that arediscussed are treated in the strictest confidenceunless you prefer otherwise.
It is possible that at some point in your life atuniversity you will suffer from a medical or personalproblem that will affect your work.
As the Schools Support Officer, my aim is to bewelcoming and approachable and to offer you theopportunity to talk in confidence about issues orproblems that may concern you. Typical mattersraised include difficulties adjusting to a new way oflife, settling in, socialising and making new friendsas well family concerns, relationship problems,
depression, eating difficulties, bereavement, orworries about drugs and alcohol.
I am also the Schools Disability Liaison Officer,providing advice and guidance to those of youwith a disability, learning difficulty or long-term
medical condition.
I am here to listen, guide you through the transitioninto University life, offering help and advice in aconfidential manner. No matter what the problem,please come to see me.
