    The marriage of the two

areas in a business psychol-ogy programme is then aperfect complement thatgives you knowledge of awide range of the issues that

The structure of the MScBusiness Psychology Pro-gramme is designed toallow students to study aspecific module as a pro-fessional developmentcertificate. This structureallows students the optionof studying a module ofinterest as a stand-alone.This will allow them toenhance their professionalskills in an area withouthaving to enrol in the fulltwo-year programme.

The Forensic Psychologycourse considers the rela-tionship between criminol-ogy, forensic psychologyand the law. It examinesseveral theories of crime, the relationship between themedia and crime, offenderprofiling, the strengths andweaknesses of eyewitnesstestimony, the developmentof investigative interviewing, jury decision making andthe factors which influenceit and treatment of offend-ers.

The programme will start byintroducing students to thefour criminological theoriesof crime (Strain theory, Chi-cago School, DifferentialTheory and Social ControlTheory).

    Students will learn to incor-

    porate psychological proc-

    esses into criminological

    theories, and the role of

    theory integration in the

    prediction of criminal be-

    haviour.

    Violent and sexual crime is

    another aspect of the foren-

    sic psychology that will be

    emphasized. We will look at

    the explanations of aggres-

    sion and violent crime, and

    of sexual aggression and

    violence. There will also be

focus on the relationshipbetween violent media and

    violent crime, and pornog-

    raphy and sexual crime.

Offender profiling will bestudied with two ap-

    proaches in particular; Crime

    scene analysis is a top-down

    approach developed in the

US and used by the FBI,

    while investigative psychology is

    a bottom-up approach de-

veloped in the UK and gen-

    erally used by academics.

    Eyewitness testimony will

    also be reviewed. Attention

will be given to the recon-

    structive nature of memory

and how this can impact the

    accuracy of eyewitness testi-

mony. Ways of enhancingthe accuracy of eyewit-

    nesses descriptive and iden-

    tification evidence will fol-

    low thereafter.

    Interviews are critical to an

    investigation, therefore a

    element of the course will

    be how to develop effective

    investigative interviewing

skills to help reduce the risk

    of false confessions.

The course will close with a

    focus on the treatment of

    offenders. Following this,

    the what works debate and

    the evaluation of treatment

    programmes will be looked

    at.

    This course considers how

the culture in which a busi-

    ness operates can influence

    all aspects of its commercial

    practice. This ranges from

    the markets and challenges

    that it identifies as interesting

    or important, to the means

by which it organizes itself in

    order to address these; the

    manner by which it defines

    organizational roles; the

    means by which it motivates

    employees; the means by

    which groups of employees

    interact; the approach to

    leadership taken by senior

    managers; and the strategic

    decisions that these managers

    make.

    This course was designed to

    enhance your expertise by

    showing you how theories

    and research concerning the

    organizational culture can be

    applied to actual business

    practice. The ability to apply

    the findings to actual busi-

    ness practice comprises part

    of the assessment, such that

    passing the course means

    that the student has demon-

strated an ability to use the

material in the course to en-

    hance the profitability of a

    range of businesses.

At the end of the pro-

    gramme, students should

    have an understanding of

    how culture:

    Influences the design of

an organization, as wellas particular jobs in theorganization

Influences employeemotivation and attitudesto differing rewards forhigh performance

Influences group deci-sion making and theconduct of meetings;and conceptions of therole of the group in theworkplace

Is created by the leaderof a new organization;and of how the leader ofa mature organizationmust be able to recog-nize and mitigate theimpact of this culture

Influences strategic deci-sion making and the stra-tegic growth of the or-

    ganisation

    Graduates of the course will

    be equipped to develop strate-

    gies as an evolving response

to situations as they arise in

    the organization based on the

understanding the organiza-tions culture. The knowledge

    and skills gained from the

    course allows the professional

    to give the organization a

    competitive advantage by es-

    tablishing a competitive cul-

ture; and the role of stake-

    holders in the process.

    Manager

    Heriot-Watt pre-

    pares you very

well for a successful career in

    the construction profession as

there is a strong emphasis on

management, as well as the tech-

nical aspects that you will need

for the job. Even after eight years

I still find links with what I did

on my course and what Im doing

    today. I am currently responsible

    for the co-ordination and manage-

ment of a range of construction

projects, my role focuses on costs

    and ensuring that budgets are

managed efficiently. I work on a

diverse range of projects in termsof size and the skills required,

    from school building programmes

in the Borders to a new visitor

centre in the Royal Botanic Gar-

    dens in Edinburgh.

    Natalie Jones,

    Barbados

    I chose the Heriot

    Watt University pro-

    gramme based on three

    criteria: flexibility, popularity and

    range of programmes available. I

liked that this programme did not

    require me to submit periodic

    assignments, only self-study and

    examinations as frequently as my

    work schedule would permit.

    Good programme, great flexibil-

    ity, with online and electronic

study resources to help me along

    the way

    .

    Alfred Okot Okidi,

    Uganda

    I have found the

    Heriot Watt pro-

    gramme to be unique,

    practical, relevant and so enrich-

    ing. The programme was quite

taxing, as I had to blend my read-

ing with a demanding work sched-

ule. The beauty of the pro-gramme to me was in the flexibil-

ity of the course and concise

    course materials presented in

    stimulating language. I treasure

the programme more than all my

    earlier qualifications and courses.

    Jason Julien,

    Trinidad & Tobago

    The HWU experience

    far exceeded my expec-

tations. The quality of the teach-

    ing materials was first-class, as

they were well written and effec-

    tively communicated the complex

    concepts. In addition to present-

ing theory and practice, the au-

    thors fostered critical thinking

    with their narrative. I highly

    recommend HWU for anyone

    seeking to equip themselves for

    the challenges of todays competi-

    tive world.

    Willem Baartman,

    Namibia

    Being from Africa it

was important for me that the

    institution offered an internation-

    ally accepted degree that would

    broaden my future career oppor-

tunities. Now after I have com-pleted the process and gained a

MBA from HWU I can look back

at my choice with a sense of pride

    and forward with optimism.

    The HWU MBA opened doors

for me even while studying as it

    demonstrated my commitment to

    various contacts within my net-

work and the quality of the pro-

gram made it possible for me to

    immediately utilize what I had

    learned. I use the knowledge
