Can I use Visio?
• MODELING RULES: Visio is good modeling tool, but lacks modeling rule enforcement for standardization during model development
• NOT FOR AUDITS: Visio is good choice for small companies who won’t interface with regulatory bodies, federal agencies, and don’t need to be in compliance. If all you need is static diagram without intelligence behind each process step, then Visio is good choice
• REPORTING: Visio can’t report inventory based off a model diagram• SIMULATION: Visio can’t simulate cost, systems impacted, and
employees impacted by a process and then report on that. • ARTIFACTS: Visio artifact attachment to objects is clunky. • PROFESSIONAL VERSION: Can create a database within Visio
Professional (Enterprise) edition http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-1039355.html but, Blogger comment: “…reminds me of the early '80s when people were sharing tips and tricks on how best to use Lotus 1-2-3 as a word processor!”

How Do I start?
Before You Get a Tool1. Capture current “as-is” process
2. Inventory IT systems used (including Excel spreadsheets, physical assets, etc)
3. Get executive buy-in
4. Select your talent
5. Create SOD
6. ID tools used and how tools will interact with each other (MS project, Issue Tracking, Modeling tool, Plotter/printer…)
7. Schedule working sessions
8. Identify your goal and sub-goals
9. Schedule: model built reviewed simulated published train end users on process Review model for updatesa. Model development 55%
b. Simulation 10%
c. Analysis of simulation & decisions captured based on sims 35%
After Tool is in Place1. Identify and document terms
“problem”, “known error”, etc
2. Map your “to be” process & capture gap analysis
3. Clarify duties of architect and how Lead will interact with other architects and modelers
4. Create tests to verify if models created meet business needs (be concise. Models should make life easier for employees)

Cost of Non-Compliance
• Compliance:– In USA 2004 $5 billion with $1
billion going to IT to become SOX compliant
– Nearly 80% corps lacked IT infrastructure to track, audit, manage compliance. Corps used excel spreadsheets, ad hoc Databases, and various external vendors & couldn’t track consistently.
– It costs more to be OUT OF compliance than to create compliant IT systems that support business needs
• “However, while the costs of ensuring compliance are considerable, the costs of not being in compliance are even higher, as companies run the risks of exclusion from key markets, stopped shipments, and product recalls, with a corresponding loss of revenue and potentially disastrous consequences for brand image and/or corporate reputation. In the case of a serious breach of compliance regulations, firms may also face hefty fines and/or criminal prosecutions…Ireland may levy fines up to £15,000,000, can impose prison terms of up to 10 years, and will ask for a recall of violating products ”

Feature Comparison, 1
Provision1. Simulation included
2. Spell checker
3. Free form design, but can cause consistency issues when working with a team of modelers
4. Numbering, but processes intertwine with each other making steps seem out of order
5. EA is included
6. Pre-canned reports included. Will need to have Crystal Reports to customize reports
7. Provision customer service available during limited hours or you can create a ticket thru Metastorm website.
8. Supporting documentation could use improvement and lacks “how to” step-by-step in some areas.
9. Can try out full version for 14 days only.
10. No integration into SAP , but Provision Connect allows for modeling of SAP bring related components from SAP Solution Manager into Provsion for analysis.
11. Has reports for MiniTab and others to identify bottlenecks in a process.
ARIS1. Simulation offered in ARIS Business Simulator, an
extra module, but allows for more powerful scenarios
2. Spell checker available in ARIS SR5 and later
3. Modeling adheres to strict rules allowing for teams to create compatible models
4. Manual numbering is available, but not recommended
5. EA is separate module, but allows for better tracking and reporting
6. Customized reporting included. No extra reporting tool needed.
7. ARIS customer service is helpful and included in plan
8. Clear documentation and videos provided
9. Can try out limited functionality of ARIS Express for free for unlimited time
10. Smooth integration into SAP, Oracle, BMC Atrium, Erwin, MiniTab, etc…
11. Architects will find ARIS very useful and complimentary to existing BPMS systems (Business Genetics, WebMethods, Casewise, Tibco business Studio, Ultimus)

Feature Comparison, 2
Provision1. Metastorm is known for having strong
BPMS tool, but Provision, formally of ProForma, is specifically for modeling
2. Lower learning curve to use than ARIS and can support modeling and enterprise architecture
3. Built in simulation, ABC and ability to analyze data for time and cost of a process
4. Can import some other types of modeling tools, but process could use improvement.
5. LDAP Single Sign on (Knowledge Exchange)
6. Good tool for single site companies with one modeling department
ARIS1. Can import models from several other Business Process tools,
such as ProVision (if set up in Provision appropriately) and many other frameworks
2. ARIS is OEMed as Oracles enterprise architecture and BPA modeling tool of choice for its deployment environment and BPMS
3. ARIS includes ABC, Balanced Scorecard, KPI management and business rules designer and more in ARIS Process Performance Manager.
4. ARIS “HOUSE” offers over 140 model type templates, formats, and industry standards for industry specific needs. This makes starting the modeling process quick since the rules for that model type are built in. (EPC, BPMN, UML, BPEL, WSDL, etc) models for Healthcare industry, Supply chain (SCOR), Value Chain Reference Model (VRM), ITIL, Value Engineering (Accelerating Projects), Enterprise Architecture, SAP, BPM, SOA, Risk & Compliance Management, etc…
5. Contains workflow solution engine to automate its own governance process
