On March 22, a gradua-tion celebration was held for the 2010-2011 session of the Teacher Executive Institute (TEI). The annual pro-gram, now in its 17th year, concluded with a dinner and ceremony at Middleburg Steak House.

Trixie Brooks, executive director of curriculum and instruction for Vance Coun-ty Schools, was the featured speaker for the graduation dinner and ceremony. She praised all of the TEI par-ticipants for their dedication to their craft and for taking part in such an important leadership program.

Brooks also urged all of the educators to promote all of the good things they are doing in their classrooms and all of the good things happening with youth in their schools. She stressed that the local community needs to know about the positive aspects of local public schools and the great work which occurs in them everyday.

Each graduate was pre-sented a framed certificate by George Fowler, executive director of the Vance County Public School Foundation, and Lisa Bolton of Walmart Distribution Center #6091

in Henderson, which spon-sored the graduation and dinner.

During the institute, Vance County classroom teachers, counselors and media specialists attended four all-day sessions focus-

ing on team building, profes-sional development, tours of local industries, meeting local business executives and learning about the history of Henderson and Vance County. The results strengthen the partnership

between the professionals in education and the business community. The program offers educators a chance to network and share ideas with one another and also talk with business leaders

about how they can work together to prepare students for the future work force.

TEI is funded by the Vance County Public School Foundation, a nonprofit or-ganization funded by private

contributions, foundation grants and local business donations. The program is co-sponsored by the Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce.

Following are the corporate sponsors for the 2010-2011 session of the TEI program:

• Gold — CenturyLink, Progress Energy, and Wal-mart Distribution Center #6091

• Silver — Carolina Quality, Supply Line Coun-try Market and Dr. Beverly Tucker

• Bronze — Wayne Ad-cock, Endrusick Enterprises, Henderson Family YMCA, J.M. White Funeral Service, Sylvan Learning Center, Vance County Farm Bureau and M.R. Williams Inc.

Event sponsors were CenturyLink, Barnett Prop-erties, The Daily Dispatch, Durham Coca-Cola, Eckerd Youth Alternatives Inc., Harperprints Inc., Hender-son-Vance County Chamber, KARTS, Maria Parham Medical Center, Progress Energy, Vance County Public School Foundation, Vance County Schools and Walmart Distribution Cen-ter #6091.

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Com-merce hosted a luncheon honoring administrative assistants and other pro-fessional support staff on April 26 at the Henderson Country Club.

The speaker for this year’s event was Alex-Sandra Lett, noted story-teller, publisher and author. Through her company, Southern Books & Talks, Lett publishes books and presents programs on a variety of topics. As a writer and as a speaker, her intention is to express her creativity and to help others discover passion and purpose in their work and meaning in every aspect of their lives.

Lett addressed the crowd in the character of “Sandy

Lynn” who told stories of her Southern roots and childhood on a farm in rural North Carolina.

In her presentation, Lett encouraged attendees not to listen too much to what others say about you, figure out what you’re good at and what you want to do, and have a good attitude.

The sell-out event was one of the most attended ever with over 160 present.

The luncheon is spon-sored each year by the Chamber of Commerce of Warren County, the Granville County Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Franklin County Chamber, the Henderson-Vance Coun-ty Chamber of Commerce and the Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center.

Norman Shearin, superinten-dent of Vance County Schools for the past eight years, was honored at a retirement banquet on April 26.

A large crowd gathered in the Southern Vance High School caf-eteria to offer their best wishes to Shearin, who officially retired on April 30. “It seems like he has been here 15 years,” Vance Coun-ty Board of Education Chairman Margaret Ellis said. “He has been such a great superintendent and has always erred on the side of the students, and we all thank him for that.”

During the event, piano music was presented by Eaton-Johnson Middle School Principal Larry Webb, Ph.D. Also speaking at the event were Vance County Commissioner Terry Garrison and former commissioner Danny Wright. “On behalf of the county commissioners, it is an honor to congratulate you on your retire-ment,” Garrison said. “I want to commend you for the calm, poise and the leadership you have

shown as superintendent. You are going to be missed and we wish you the very best.” Wright added: “Dr. Shearin would never let us forget the most important thing for county commissioners is the education of our citizens, and we thank him for that.”

On behalf of the Vance County School Board, board member Gloria White presented Shearin with a rocking chair and a set of luggage. White said of Shearin: “He would go into his own pocket, not just look in the budget, to give something to a child.”

Shearin thanked the speak-ers for their kind words and expressed his appreciation of everyone he has worked with. “I think we have made a lot of prog-ress, but it always needs to be for the kids,” Shearin said. “Vance County Schools have great prin-cipals and teachers who are there for the kids constantly.”

Ronald Gregory, assistant superintendent of Vance County Schools, became interim superin-tendent on May 1.
