CASE STUDYDOVER HARBOUR BOARD

In 2016 the University and Dover Harbour Board embarked on a twoyear Knowledge TransferPartnership to improvetraffic flow at the Port of Dover’s Eastern Docks which, upon itscompletion, was awardedthe highest possible ratingfrom Innovate UK.

The project used data modellingand simulation software to help thePort operate more effectively. Thework focused on several strands, most notably improving how the Port

predicts likely traffic volumes toensure it has enough staff on handto process vehicles through the portand so minimise the risk of queuesforming in and around Dover.

By improving its use of data fromvarious sources, such as live trafficdata on the motorways and pasttraffic levels at similar times, itdrastically reduced the use ofTraffic Assessment Project (TAP)that sees freight traffic held outsideDover by a series of traffic lights.

This has not only reduced theimpact that freight traffic has onDover and its residents, but it alsomeans one of the UK’s key import-

export hubs is able to ensure goodscan move into the UK, or over toEurope, more efficiently.

The traffic simulation model is now also used to help predict therequirement of the French borderauthorities operating in Dover toensure traffic through the port iskept moving at all stages.

These successes saw the projectawarded a grade of ‘Outstanding’by the KTP Grading Panel. Only10% of KTP projects achieve thisgrade, underlining the impact theproject has had.

In 2010, the DefenceScience and TechnologyLaboratory (Dstl) beganworking with theUniversity of Kent toestablish how its mainresearch areas couldrespond to key scienceand technological needs of the defence industries. The University workedclosely with Dstl to movetoward a strategicallymanaged relationship, and develop a sharedunderstanding of priorityscience and technologyareas.

CASE STUDYDSTL

Developing close links with Dstl’sprogramme areas, domains and itsCentre for Defence Enterprise (theMoD’s gateway to the outsideworld), led to Kent successfullysecuring over £500k in projectfunding to support research andenterprise collaborations by the end of 2012.

The relationship has continued to develop, spanning Science andSocial Science faculties, to solveproblems in communications,counter-terrorism, system security, psychology and human behaviour, logistics and power sources. Latestresearch in the Materials arenaincludes battery building anddesign, and improving theperformance and characteristics of energy storage.

Kent’s leading research in socialpsychology and sports studies is contributing to the HumanCapabilities arena with ‘BrainEndurance Training’ to increasesoldier resistance to cognitivefatigue.

Ground-breaking research from the University’s Centre for CyberSecurity is focusing on assuredremote access to the cloud; RFID and body worn antennas;biometrics including facialexpressions and linking toneuroscience and cognitivesystems. Multi-disciplinary projectcollaborations are underway withthe School of Engineering andDigital Arts; and academicfellowships are in place with theSchool of Psychology, School of

Engineering and Digital Arts, theSchool of Physical Sciences and the University’s Business School.

“Universities benefit from our experts as lecturers or in supervisory roles, and Dstl benefits with access tospecialist facilities, researchand expertise. Kent has a richvein of hitherto untappedexpertise in key science andtechnology areas that can helpaddress Dstl’s requirements. The partnership has providedthe opportunity to exploremutual areas of interest, and we very much lookforward to strengthening the relationship.”
