abstract

Although most of the people assume that peer pressure is an

influential component of adolescent development but the present

study assessed how much pressure the peers can exerted in

various areas of youth life and how this pressure influenced

teenagers' attitudes, ways of life, and their behaviors. Our data

and report identified that peer pressure does exist among

teenager.

A commonly held view about peer pressure is that social pressure

from friends to use drugs and alcohol is a major contributor to

substance use, while the concept of peer pressure enables adults

to explain youths' troubling behaviors. peer pressure indicates

Page 9

Page 10: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

that adoption of the behavior and appearance from peers is a

continuous effecting factor on personal and social life of youth.

Introduction

Peer relates to someone who is similar to you in age, grade, gender, or other traits. they could be our friends, classmates, cousins, people in the neighborhood etc. Peers influence our life, whether we know it or not, just by spending time with us. we learn from them and they learn from us. It is the pressure from one's peers to behave in a manner similar or acceptable to them.

Peer pressure is the influence of a social group on an individual and it is one of the most difficult aspects of growing up which is hard to resist easy to persuade

Not all peer pressure is easily noticed or defined. Body language, attitude and signals can all lead one to think he or she should dress or talk a certain way or be more rebellious towards teachers, parents and students that want to make the right choices.

Traits that are putting students at a higher risk of falling to peer

pressure

Page 10

Page 11: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

Low self esteem

Lack of confidence

Uncertainty about ones place within a given peer group

No personal interests exclusive of one's peer group

Feeling isolated from peers and/or family

Lack of direction in life

Depression

Eating disorders

Poor academic abilities or performance

Dishonesty

Violence, gangs

Sexual immorality

Material possessions

Alcohol, tobacco, drugs

Disobedience, rebellion

Condoning sin and error

Whereas peer pressure can be further categorized into two different terms.

1. Spoken

Page 11

Page 12: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

It is also called direct pressure. It's when someone asks you directly to do something, or may ask things to you that push you toward a certain choice.

2. Unspoken

It is Also called indirect pressure. It's when nothing is said to you, but because you see others doing something you feel pressure to do the same thing.

Furthermore we will try to find the following objectives in our report;

Objectives

The objectives of carrying out this research can be listed out as follows:

1. To identify the effects of peer pressure on youth.

2. To identity the common myths about peer pressure.

3. To identify whether peer pressure is only a negative force or

it has some positive effects also.

4. To find up to which extent does peer pressure could effect

and what are the changes it could bring in people's lifestyle.

Page 12

Page 13: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

5. To identify basic reasons which leads to peer pressure.

LITRATURE RIVEW

Peer pressure, an inexorable situation everyone is confronted

with. It is a powerful mental force that influences everyone, but

tends to more strongly affect people in their teenage years. No

matter how popular one is, how well liked one may be or how

together one feel, sooner or later one will have to face peer

pressure because it is inevitable. Whether it is pressure to

conform to a group norm or pressure to act in a particular way

peer pressure is something everybody has to deal with at some

time in his life. How successfully one handles peer pressure

depends immensely on how one feels about oneself and one's

place in the world. Having said that, peer pressure can be both

good and bad depending on what they are being pressured to do.

Page 13

Page 14: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

Peers influence our life, even if we don't realize it, simply by

spending time with us. We can learn from them, and they can

learn from us. It's only human nature to listen and learn from other

people. But the major problem with peer pressure occurs when a

person gets sucked into something that he really didn't want to do

and subsequently, become addicted to it. Usually, people get

backed into a situation to try illegal drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes

and ultimately such behavior can become habit forming. Similarly,

the parameters of good and bad have been replaced by "what's

in" and "what's out". Peer pressure is nothing but the persistent

desire of people to be perceived as happening and cool in order

to belong to a particular group. The question a rises here that why

do people give in to peer pressure? Some kids give in to peer

pressure because they want to be liked, to fit in, or because they

worry that other children might make fun of them if they don't

go along with their group. Others might go along because they

are curious to know and to try something new that others are

doing. The idea that "everyone's doing it" can influence some

students to leave their better judgment, or their common sense,

behind. For parents who want to guide their children to deal with

peer pressure, the answer lies in straightforward and effectual

parenting. Always tell your child that he/she is a unique individual

Page 14

Page 15: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

and does not have to emulate his/her peer to feel accepted by

them. Peer pressure is something that children deal from the early

education and even continue facing the problem during

adulthood. Although the sternness of peer pressure might not

seem very grave in every situation, never take any sort of peer

pressure lightly. No matter what form it comes in, peer pressure

wears away the individuality and retards personal growth.

Some examples of Negative Peer Pressure Include:

Cheating during a test or in exams

Skipping class

Cutting someone out of the group

Fighting

Smoking cigarettes/ sheeshas

Stealing

Using alcohol or other drugs

Lying to parents about where you’re going

Vandalism

Page 15

Page 16: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

Gossiping and cliques

Trespassing

Prank phone calls

Sexual behavior

Copying homework

And many more! Most young people have at least one peer

pressure situation to deal with every day

It is to be noted that most of the people thinks that peer

pressure is something very negative or they thinks that peer

pressure has no positive aspects but in reality peer pressure

does have some positive effects which in general proves to

be a good side of peer pressure.

the following are the positives of peer pressure:

Pressure to get into College/university: Getting pressured to

get into college or university can have a positive effect. It can

further encourage us to figure out what we want to do with our

very far in life and this is a positive peer pressure because if we

respect others in return they will respect us. furthermore If we

have respect for others, People will have a positive view about

us.

Pressure to adopt exercise: This is another positive aspect

of peer pressure as if our group or friend can helps us

Page 17

Page 18: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

in bringing a very positive change of doing prayers regularly

and participating in different religious activity.

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

Though often times peer pressure is associated with negativity, it

can actually be a good thing.

Outside sources can be used to help us in making the right

decisions.

If someone is trying to get you to do something you don’t want to

do, don’t do it.

Use the decision making process before acting in a situation.

DISCUSSION

After the analysis and the job of collecting information about our

related topic next is to go through that information and get a

conclusion. While having discussion few points were raised by

group partners, which were:

Is it positive or negative?

Page 36

Yes No May be Not sure12 17 27 12

Page 37: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

It can be said as positive because this pressure let you to work

hard.

It could be negative because it could be the cause of depression.

It can be a cause of adoption of bad habits like smoking, etc.

Moving forward while analyzing data conversation continued:

We come to know that females are having the problem of peer

pressure more than males because they are low at stress

management and get easily depressed. They think more

emotionally rather than thinking practical. On other hand the result

we received from males, they show totally opposite picture and

attitude. According to that males are more practical in thoughts

and decision making that’s why they easily go through all these

situations.

An argue took place where points were that females are more

involved in household matter while males has to work out that’s

why males are not arrested by peer pressure but after a long

conversation we agreed on a point that both are equally caught by

this problem because males are having large friends circles as

well as has equal contribution in house while females are totally

house hold ones but they have to take care of more relation like in

laws, etc.

Page 37

Page 38: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

Talking about friends and external environment, analysis shows

that a youth between age of 16 to 22 is 90 % influenced by peer

pressure and due to immaturity they are not able to recognize that

what is happening to them they start involving in different

activities like smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, etc just

because their friends use to do that and unfortunately for that time

they feel good and feel like they will be valued by their friends.

This is actually a peer pressure which is pushing them to get

involved.

By considering the situation that if your opinion is

needed among friends but you knew that they will make fun of

you, so what will you do? Research shows that most of the people

will give their opinion and they don’t care about all fun so it can be

said that sometimes peer pressure can be a positive thing like in

situation it gave confidence.

Moreover people consider doing things which are right

according to them they neither listen to their friends or any other

surrounding person. Here once again peer pressure is defeated.

One negative effect which came out from above

discussion is that the one who is involved in any above activity he

Page 38

Page 39: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

often lies to their parents like if someone is involved in smoking g

he never tells his parents.

One positive effect which comes to our knowledge but is

nowadays rarely happens that friends often bring constructive

change to our life as well as some enhancement to positive

attitudes.

Discussion was ended some agreements that peer pressure is a

feeling of being bounded but have different effects on different

minds, sometimes its positive and sometimes negative depends

on the situation

conclusion

In life making friends is important, and so is socializing, but there

are ways to forge new ties and mix up with people without being

pressurized by the peers. Friends never make you lose

your identity, making friends is about appreciating the differences

and respecting individual tastes and still being

Page 39

Page 40: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

together. Therefore, remember that if someone asks you to

change yourself and be like them in order to be accepted, you are

better off without them. Be comfortable with who you are, and you

will soon make new friends and will be accepted by everyone.

The effects of peer pressure can be prevented by teaching a

students to be confident and comfortable in his/her own skin.

Recommendations

The following are the recommendations that we would like to give

after going through all our research and report work.

Parents should become the role model for their children so

that their children follow them rather following others.

Parents should have authority over their children.

Parents should Teach their Children to Recognize Negative

Peer Pressure

Page 40

Page 41: BUSINESS ENGLISH FINAL REPORT PEER PRESSURE.docx

RESEARCH REPORT (PEER PRESSUER)

The best friend is one who guides his friend that what is

good and what is bad, therefore we should all try to become

a friend of such quality.

knowledge about peer pressure should be spread through

media, education, social network and specially by parents.
