502 AMERICAN POTATO JOURNAL (Vol. 59

At the present time a number of manuscripts are ready for printing in the hands of the business manager. The details are in his report. The Editor- in-Chief has 21 manuscripts in various stages of review--somewhat more than usual. We try to publish an average of 5 papers in each issue.

The Editorial Board--appointed each year by The President of the Association--has been most cooperative during the past twelve months. Not every member of the board is asked to review articles. Much depends on the " m i x " of articles received from the members.

The editor wishes to acknowledge, also, the help he has received from other members of the Association when asked to review specific papers. The membership should be aware of this effort to maintain a high standard for the American Potato Journal.

1982) NEWS AND REVIEWS 503

Total number of reprints ordered: 8,500 Total pages printed (including first four) 692 Average per issue 58 Total pages in articles 419 Average per issue 35 Remaining pages were News and Reviews, Short Communica- tions, advertising, miscellaneous and blanks.

Following publication of the June 1982 issue, there were 14 articles in galley, sent to authors and returned, ready for scheduling. Three articles have been set and sent to authors, but not yet returned. Eight articles and one book review are in press for setting.

Most articles continued to be published within six months of their ac- ceptance. There are exceptions, when questions arise after acceptance and long delays result in resolving the problems.

Total number of pages decreased by 80 over the past fiscal year. The number of articles decreased by four (4) and News and Reviews decreased by nine (9). The first Short Communicat ion article was published during the year. Total reprints decreased by 1,000.

There were two postal rate increases during the year. An in-county in- crease is scheduled for July, but there should be little effect on Journal mail- ing costs.

Respectfully submitted,

Ronald Knight Business Editor

Advertising revenue increased f rom $3,463 to $4,673 and lineage f rom 28 ½ to 35 IA pages.

Chemical companies continued to do the bulk of advertising, placing 24½ pages of ads. Other advertisers seem to be looking at the Journal with more and more favor, however. Agdia, Inc., a new company, placed six two- color ads (full page) for its potato disease test kits. We attracted two ads f rom the Netherlands for pota to handling equipment. Full-page Maine seed potato ads, position announcements, and smaller display ads round out the picture.

Promot ional material continues to be sent to companies considered to be advertising prospects. There are many inquiries about advertising in the Journal, and each is answered in detail. Several advertising agencies have requested information, which continues to be a hopeful sign.
