• Subject Teachers are expected to:

• Be qualified in the subject at least first degree level (postgraduate for Pre-Masters preparation)

• Have at least two years’ teaching experience

• EAP Teachers are expected to:

• Hold the equivalent of a CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language)

• The lead EAP teacher should hold the equivalent of a DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language)

• NCUK supply all assessments – first level marking takes place at centres, NCUK moderates all papers

• NCUK supply detailed syllabus and other documents, via ‘Welcome’ online which include:

• Full topic list

• Detailed list of specific learning outcomes

• Suggested teaching plan

• Core text and recommended texts

• Past papers

• Exemplar student work

International Foundation Year (IFY)• The following subjects are available

• Art and Design • Biology• Business Studies• Chemistry• Economics• Physics• Society and Politics

or Government and Politics

• A one year programme to provide the academic qualifications and English

skills to progress to an undergraduate degree

• Subjects are have outcomes ‘comparable with A-level’ (NARIC, 2014)

• Graded like A levels• A*, A, B, C, D, E, U

• Specialised focus on UK learning and preparation for degree level study (same depth, reduced breath)

• A combination of both coursework and exams – not 100% final examination

IFY Entry Requirements• Completion of High School is country-dependent

• Generally 12 years of education

• English level can be assessed using any reasonable test• NCUK currently provides Password as an English language placement test

NCUK QualificationsOfficially recognised by NARIC* as comparable to A-Level

• In the expert opinion of NARIC the IFY programme modules are found to develop a broadly comparable level of knowledge and understanding of subject material as well as the analytical and application skills required to solve problems typically encountered at upper secondary level.

• NARIC, found that the IFY programme "is considered comparable to the overall GCE A level standard" and there is an "emphasis on the development of key transferrable skills such as critical thinking, organisational and ICT skills.

*UK NARIC is the UK’s National Recognition Information Centre and provides services for individuals and organisations advising on comparisons of international qualifications against UK qualification framework levels.

Assessments and Quality IFY

• NCUK Set all Assessments• Set by subject experts*, reviewed by external examiner*

• NCUK Study Centre staff mark all assessments• Using NCUK marking schemes and exemplars

• All work sent to NCUK for moderation• Work moderated by external examiners*

• Results reported to and ratified by NCUK Examination Board

• NCUK has a full academic quality framework which follows QAA codes of practice and Ofqual regulations for awarding organisations

• NCUK has an independent External Auditor who reports to Northern Consortium Board of Trustees

* subject experts and external examiners are taken from university staff and senior teaching staff

• English level can be assessed using any reasonable test or NCUK’s preferred entry test

• Modules are generally• 75% examination• 25% coursework

• Programme may be taught with and without EAP
