Business computer sales hint at preference towards cloud storage

New figures from the NPD Group have made for interesting reading among many within the technology sector both in the US and here in the UK.

The organisation claims that through November 2013, a total of 14.4 million desktops, notebooks and tablets were sold through US commercial channels, an increase of 25.2 per cent compared to 2012.

Of that number, the sales of desktops grew by 8.5 per cent, while the number of Notebooks increased by 28.9 per cent, while the sales of tablet devices surged by 49 per cent, compared to the same period in 2012.

One of the most interesting facts to come out of the numbers though, was that Google's Chromebook accounted for 21 per cent of all notebook sales, surpassing the 2012 figure of just 10 per cent.

Some analysts have already put the figures down to a growing trend within the technology sector; a growing faith in the concept of cloud storage.

By the nature of its design, the Chromebook works by using cloud-based resources rather than physical local ones; a concept that has clearly proved popular with many users, especially when topics such secure data storage have become so highly talked about in recent times.

It is not the only sign however, that suggests the concept of cloud computing could really be about to take off over the course of the next few years.

Market research company Infonetics Research recently predicted that the revenues of companies providing cloud security are set to experience an annual growth rate of 10.8 per cent until 2015, when it will reach $9.2 billion (£5.57 billion).

Brian Contos, CISO for web filter appliance company Blue Coat, told CSO.com: "People have become more comfortable now with the cloud so they're feeling more comfortable leveraging certain cloud services for security."
