BUSINESS BULLETIN ISSUE NINE – JUN/JUL 2018 Whether you are looking to motivate and inspire your employees, develop your brand profile, create great PR or cement your commitment to the local community, it makes great sense to be talking to Nottingham Hospitals Charity. Nottingham Hospitals Charity (registered charity number 1165397) is here to help you help your local hospitals. We’re the charity at the heart of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, supporting the very best care for patients at Queen’s Medical Centre, City Hospital, Ropewalk House and Hayward House. To find out more about any of these projects or events please contact Marianne Burchell on 0115 962 7905 or by emailing marianne.burchell@nuh.nhs.uk CLIMBING MOUNTAINS FOR YOUR LOCAL HOSPITALS Year after year we see teams of staff from local businesses coming together to take on group challenges which are not only successful as charity fundraisers, but also as valuable teambuilding activities. In April 2018 brilliant teams from two local businesses – PJ Towey Construction and Nottingham City Transport – took on mammoth walking challenges, sharing memorable adventures and raising thousands of pounds for Nottingham’s hospitals. Martin Towey, Director of Nottingham-based civil engineers PJ Towey Construction, led a troop of fourteen colleagues to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge. The challenge takes on the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales. It is 24 miles long and involves 5,200 feet of climbing. “We aren’t the fittest bunch, so it was a real challenge,” said Martin. “We were definitely helped along by all of the sponsorship for the Neonatal Units that we received from friends, family, suppliers and business contacts. The lads did me proud, finishing the challenge in 11 hours and 20 minutes. It was a great day out. Who knows, this year the Yorkshire Three Peaks, next year Mount Kilimanjaro!” To date the PJ Towey Construction team have raised over £11,000 for the Neonatal Units – an incredible achievement (smashing the initial target of £5,000!) which will have a hugely positive impact, providing support and care for premature babies and their families. From Yorkshire to Lancashire, a week later, a team of five staff from city bus operator Nottingham City Transport took on the Lake District Six Peaks (also known as the Buttermere Horseshoe) to raise money for the Berman 1 Stroke Unit at City Hospital, which has been caring for the husband of a colleague. Gluttons for punishment, along the way they even managed to find a seventh peak (!), completing the 16 mile, 5,800 feet challenge in a fabulous 11 hours and 45 minutes. Marketing Manager Anthony Carver-Smith said, “It was a tough but fantastic day and I’m so proud of the whole team. It meant so much to be raising money for an amazing ward that is very close to our hearts. We’re already thinking up the next challenge!” Very well done to the NCT team who have raised more than £2,000 for Berman 1 Unit, which will help to enhance care for stroke patients at City Hospital. If you and colleagues are interested in taking on a teambuilding activity to raise money for Nottingham Hospitals Charity then please do get in touch for ideas.

Building materials manufacturer Artex Ltd raised £1,580 for the Neonatal unit at City Hospital. Artex employee Norma’s stepdaughter, Hayley, gave birth prematurely to her daughter Faith in 2016. Tragically, Faith’s life was cut short when she was just 7 hours old. Norma was so grateful for the care that Faith and Hayley received during this time that she encouraged all of her work colleagues to fundraise with her to say thank you.

Big iMRI AppealDuring Brain Tumour Awareness Month in March we launched the next stage of our Big Appeal for Nottingham Children’s Hospital – the Big iMRI Appeal. We need to raise £1.2m to fund new state-of-the-art scanning equipment to help children with brain tumours.Brain surgery is extremely complex and the specialists at Nottingham Children’s Hospital will benefit from being able to use an intra-operative MRI (iMRI) during surgery, to help young patients like Olivia.

Olivia was diagnosed with a brain tumour when she was just 16 months old and since then she has had several operations. Olivia’s dad David is passionate about the need for the iMRI: “I think it will save lives and reduce the amount of operations, because if they can scan her when she’s been operated on they can see if there’s any possibility of getting anything else while they are already in there. If you have got some money to give and you would like to give it to something that’s going to make a massive difference, give it to this iMRI Appeal – we need this, to save our kids.”

If your company would like to support the Big iMRI Appeal please get in touch today to find out more about how we can support you to make a difference.

Teeing off for the Big AppealWe were lucky to have a largely sunny day (with only a few April showers!) for our Big Appeal Golf Tournament at The Nottinghamshire. Nineteen teams from local businesses took part, helping to raise more than £6,500 for the Big Appeal. The Star Prize in the raffle was the use of a luxury holiday apartment in Malaga kindly donated by Cema Ltd.

It was incredibly close between the top teams, but the worthy winners were Agrovista, who were presented with their prize by cricketing legend Derek Randall.

Thank you so much to our brilliant hole sponsors – Agrovista, Collins Cash & Carry, Curtis Parkinson Solicitors, DC Training & Development Services and Western Power Distribution.

We are very pleased to announce that the date for our next Charity Golf Tournament is Thursday 4 April 2019 at The Nottinghamshire. Headline sponsorship is available for the event. If you would like to find out more about the unique business benefits on offer (or to sign up early to take part), please contact Marianne on 0115 926 7905 or by emailing [email protected].
