A. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The final project of Introduction to Business is giving student a chance to run a business .And, through the process, students can gain the practical experiences that cannot learned from the book .For the last purpose, all the profit that the students earned will donate to charitable organization of their choice.

After discussing , our group decided to sell roses and dessert. We doing a lot of research about the popular dessert currently. Our target not just uni student but also outside comer of the campus . After that , we found Softsrve Ice-cream. It is drawing another ice-cream fever across the town after Milkcow and Inside Scoop. They were intrested and willing to partnership with us after we gave them a call . We were having a discussion with one the shareholder of the business, which is Mr.Jack by visiting his shop that located at Kota Damansara. The result is Soft-serve will sponsor all the things that needed to make their ice-cream and covered our expanses for the ice-cream. But we need to find an ice-cream machine by ourselves because they were out of machine and after our ice-cream profit is reaching the target , all the extra money will return to them .This problem was solve after we found Mr.Phillip who can rent us the machine . Not just the machine, he also rent us a kiosk to place machine. For the roses , we also found a florist which can provide us with low price roses and packaging material.

All the profit we earn will be given to Paws Animal Welfare Society. A society look after stray cats and dogs and to re-home them. We choose this society is because Paws need to raise funds for the eventual relocation and rebuilding of the shelter at the new land.

Before the days charity drive, we were pre-selling the roses about seven days as the backup plan if we do not reach our target. We selling roses within campus. While the days of charity drive , we set up our Softsrve Ice-cream booth opposite to the Student Life Central (SLC) .

The total profit is RM3579.00 and donated to Paw Animal Welfare Society .

The main reason we choose Paws Animal Welfare Society ( PAWS ) is because we love animals. Secondly , Paws animal shelter is having a land ownership problem and overcrowded issue as well as financial problem. They don’t have any extra income , all their expenses depends entirely on the generosity of the public through donations or proceeds from charitable events organised and run by some volunteers. Hence , we decided to help out by giving them all the profits that we had earn during the charity drive week. The minor reason is because Paws is very near to Taylor’s Univeristy. It’s just less than 15 minutes of ride from campus to Paws.

We aim to raise a fund of more than RM3500 during the charity drive week and donate the 100% of profit to Paws Animal Welfare Society by selling our products instead of RM2500. This is because we are quite confident of our products and we had partnership with our sponsor which is Softsrve Ice Cream. We sell roses in packaging and Softsrve ice cream. One stalk of rose is RM10 and Softsrve ice cream is RM8 in average price. The sales unit we targeted for rose is 40 stalks a day and total of 200stalks of roses for a week before the presale. While for the Softsrve ice cream , we targeted 100 cups of ice cream per day and total of 500 cups during the charity week.

C. TARGET MARKET :

4

1. University student

University students are our main target . Students are occupy the most percentage of our income . First , roses are specific to couples. And some of the students will purchasing as a gift for their lecturer. Secondly , ice-cream is a suitable snacks between meals especially after lunch. The price of our product is affordable for Taylors’ student . They will buy it as long as they like it.

2. Outside comers and relatives

Ice-cream is a popular snacks between meals especially after lunch . No matter which age, it is suitable for everyone. Beside, outsiders , especially a family with kids, they will more likely to purchase it . For roses, outsider will more likely to purchase it rather than student, because they have fixed income.

D. COMPETITION ANALYSIS Our two main competitors are Ben’s group and 4Genies’ group .

5

1. 4GENIES’ GROUP

This group is selling doughnuts , fresh fruit juice and milk shake . Their booth is located at the no.18 which is infront of the stair case .

Advantage :

As their booth located infront of the staircase, the customer will approach their booth while going down stairs. This give them a chance to persuade customers to buy their products. Beside, the doughnuts they are selling are from famous company which is “Big Apple”. Next, they are selling variety of product .

Weakness :

The prices of their product is quite high due to their cost. Beside, they started to sell their product at late afternoon. A lot of their income relied on donation.

The distance between our booth and theirs are far . Thus, there was only slightly affected our sales. Beside, the selling point (smoking effect ) of our ice-cream is able us to attract more customers purchase our product.

6

2. BEN’S GROUP

This group is also pre-selling their flowers before the charity drive.

Advantages:

They are selling the flowers on celebration date (Mothers’s day) . Thus, the purchasing rate of consumers are higher than us .

Weakness:

They only selling carnation flower one day before mother’s day due to the carnation flowers is only suitable for the specific celebration date. Besides, their price is higher than ours.

Our group were selling roses. Roses are a suitable choice as a gift for various kind of situation and person. Beside, we were selling on different date. Thus, it only have a slightly affect of our customers rate.

After that, we use thorn remover to remove the torn of roses and use the sleeves and ribbon for the packaging of roses. After we finished our packaging then we start to promote the roses and selling it. We are having a free delivery service within campus. The roses are having a nice looks and it can let customers to give it to others as a gift.

H. SPONSORS

We approach Softsrve Ice Cream and Dessert bar as our sponsor. Sortsrve is a very new ice cream , they just open for few months and they have a lot of customers in such a short period. Most of their customers’ background are youngster and those that often tried on new stuff. Secondly, we admire their creative products which is the unordinary smoking ice cream.

Address :

Softsrve Ice Cream and Dessert Bar

31 , Jalan SS21/1A

Damansara Utama, Damansara Uptown

Petaling Jaya

The reason we had choosen Softsrve is because we are very confident with their products. They are quite famous in Klang Valley area and they had been rated as Top 10 ice cream in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur area. With their famous profile , we don’t have to do a lot of promotion to get the customers . Contrary , the customers will automatically approaches us.

The reason we think that the chances Softsrve Ice Cream will Sponsor us is because we have the very similar customer’s background. Secondly , Softsrve Ice Cream is a very new ice cream , everyone that trendy would always look for new food and most of them would just try for a single time. So , Softsrve would like to search for some regular customers. Next , they would like to promote their products in Taylor’s University Lake Side campus due to the customer’s background which most of them are affordable for the pricy ice cream.

After our few times visit to Softsrve Ice Cream , they are willing to sponsor us everything include all the ingredient , material and so on except for ice cream machine. They fully sponsor us for everything but they will get back the extra earning after we reach the target of RM2500 and with the deduction of cost. Major cost like rental of machine and kiosk , typhoid vaccine , transportation of machine and kiosk petrol fee. Further more, we request of a salary of RM30 for a day for each of us , so there should be

15

RM600 for 5 days. The money of the salary would also donate to Paws Animal Welfare Society. Hence, they can only get the extra earning after RM3100. They agreed with our request.

For the first time , we approach them by face to face meeting , telephone calls , sms , as well as provide sponsorship letter and proposal. We have been there for few times for proposing our plan and set up some agreement . We had also been there for 8 hours in 2 days for ice cream making tutorial. The person in charge to contact with us is Mr. Jack Liau whose is the operating manager in Softsrve.( The guy with the grey shirt )

Agreement between Softsrve Ice Cream and Dessert Bar and Us as below :

In this charity drive event , we successfully earn the net profit of RM3579 and donate to Paws Animal Welfare Society. The pie chart represent most of the profit comes from the sponsorship.

Sales

Ice CreamRosesDonation

At the end of the assignment , we found out that selling roses is very profitable as our cost is about RM1.30 and we sell it at the price of RM10. The choice of selling roses is smart but it would be smarter if we sell it at the right time for example like Valentine’s day. At the first day which is the day we test out our market in the campus , the response is quite overwhelming as we sold out all 39 roses in 2 hours time. It was surprisingly response from our customers. But when it goes to the second day , it is harder for us to sell the roses as the customers is almost same and we usually walk around at the campus during the break time. Then . it was getting harder for the following days. At the 5th day , we could’nt even reach 20 roses for selling duration of whole day. We realized that we have limited customers that would buy our roses. So , the decision of selling roses is smart only at the beginning.

While for the Softsrve ice cream, definitely we were on the right way. During the charity drive , we had a really overwhelming response from our customer. For every single day of the charity drive , we sold out at 2 or 3 hours time after we operate our business. We sold out 80 to 90 cups of ice cream per day. Although we can earn a lot of money by selling popular products , but we need to work under Softsrve and as their temporary staff . Unlike other group, they are selling their own products so the they are the boss. The next problem we faced is the ice cream machine. The machine is very troublesome and had work not that well which is out from our expectation. The machine is expensive , so we need to take care of the safety of machine , it is also heavy which is 150kg , we need to think of how to move it around . Lastly , we need to bring the machine from Hi Tech electrical engineering and marketing sdn bhd from Balakong. Lastly , the electric of campus in front of the Student Life Centre is quite low as a lot of people sharing the electric. So our customers have to wait for long time to get a cup of ice cream. At the end of the charity drive week, we had a small issue which was Softsrve did not want to give the salary of RM600 as we agreed earlier. Futher more , they did not want to responsible for the ice cream machine’s technician’s handling fee(RM100). If they were responsible , we could reach RM4500 in the very end of assignment.

20

Although we exceed the target RM2500 for this assignment , we found out there’s still a lot more spaces of improvement. However , if we were given a chance to repeat the event , we would still sell a branded product but with a so troublesome equipment. For example Magnum ice cream and Baskin Robbin ice cream . Those 2 ice cream are hard ice cream and would just need a freezer to store them. We don’t have to worry about the safety , movement ang electrical supply of soft ice cream machine.
