Christina Kurpil JonesSTORY AND PHOTO BY ELI RUIZ

Name: Christina (Kurpil) JonesAge: 49Place of employment: My sister

Jen’s houseCurrent title and duties: My cur-

rent title is Aunt Chrissy and myduties include loving my 2-year-oldnephew with all my heart and receiv-ing unconditional love in return.

Years at current employer: 2Favorite part of your job: I love

playing with my nephew. Watchinghim grow up from an infant to a littleman is such a gift. Because I have notbeen able to have children of myown, I truly cherish the time I havewith other people’s children especial-ly my own nieces and nephews.

Most challenging part of your job: Iguess I would have to say going homewithout a child of my own is probablythe most challenging part of having ajob that involves children. Though Ilove the time spent with my nephew, there is always a little missing piecein my heart. I think any woman thatcannot bring a child into the worldthat truly longs to be a mother, prob-ably has the same feelings.

Favorite on-the-job moment, cus-tomer or memory: There are somany wonderful moments “on thejob” but maybe my favorite momentwas the day my nephew first calledme by name. His version of my nameis “Kishy.” I love it. That also includeda kiss and big hug around my neckand that was priceless.

Education: I graduated fromLiberty High School. I had great

teachers and a couple that taught myparents as well! I received degreesfrom Morrisville and Sullivan CountyCommunity College. I have to saySCCC is a great option for local kids ifthey just take advantage of it.

Professional certifications: I havedegrees in Dietetics and Secretarial/InfoTech (computers)

Favorite movie: “It’s a WonderfulLife” has to be my all time favorite.Just to have George realize how manylives he touched is very eye opening. We may never know how, the way wetreat a person will affect them, so Ialways try to be a compassionate, caring person.

Favorite actor/and or actress:Going back to the good old days ofwholesomeness and morals I woulddefinitely choose Mickey Rooney –the days he acted with Judy Garland. If we come back to the present, then Iwould choose Matt Damon.

How do you spend your sparetime: In my spare time I practice andplay fiddle, piano and guitar – writingand singing my own songs. My Dadwas always playing the fiddle or gui-tar when we were kids, so my siblingsand I naturally followed in his foot-steps. I started playing piano at 5. Ipicked up the fiddle about 18 yearsago and I bought myself a guitar ayear ago. I have been truly blessed tobe able to perform fiddle in public inour family band “The KurpilFiddlers.” We played on the mainstage at Bethel Woods opening forRhonda Vincent and Ralph Stanley. That was a great time! My sisterCindy and I sing and play dueling

harmony fiddles and our Dad is ourguitar man. We always say “He nevermisses a beat”. My nephew Rudy andniece Kathleen join us on fiddles onoccasion too. I also like to makequilts but haven’t kept any for myself. And my husband and I like to takelong walks with our dogs.

Favorite vacation spot: I am easy toplease. Give me a good book, a nicewarm sunny day with the birdssinging and I can vacation on mybeautiful front porch. I don’t have togo far or spend lots of money to behappy and content. If we choose toget off the property and go some-where with wonderful childhoodmemories, that place would be LittlePond State Park or Mongaup StatePark. Local jewels.

Family: I was born and raised, in aloving household, in Liberty acrossthe street from my mom’s childhoodhome. I am blessed with fantasticparents, Sam and Frances who havebeen great role models. I am one ofsix children. I have two brothers, SamJr and Michael and hree sisters, Julie,Cindy and Jennifer. I am married tomy best friend, Donny. We have threebabies in heaven – two boys and agirl. God is watching over them untilthe day we meet again. We also havetwo rescue dogs Dolly and Dukey anda cat named Magoo.

people know that they don’t have tobe married, straight, wealthy, in per-fect health, or own their own homes,in order to adopt.

Most challenging part of your job:Getting people to understand that“Love is all you need” is baloney.More important qualities arepatience, unconditional commit-ment, and respect for the child andtheir emotional baggage. All childrenneed families – they shouldn’t haveto earn a family by good behavior.

Favorite on-the-job moment, cus-tomer or memory: The “ahamoment” when a frustrated adoptivefather understands the concept of“inducement” and realizes that hisunusually intense fear or anger is real-ly what his child is feeling and hascommunicated nonverbally to him. Then the father is empowered to showhis child how a grown-up can handlethose overwhelming emotions.

Favorite part of your job: I enjoyevery part of my job. I love when Iorder a batch of books and they arechecked out right after they hit theshelf, or when someone comes in andsays they enjoyed the book they justread. I get to attend events such asBook Expo of America, Comic Conand the New York Library AssociationYouth Services Section conference tolearn about upcoming books, the lat-est literary trends and meet authors, which helps me pick out those booksthat fly off the shelf.

Planning and running programs is alot of fun, and I try to be creative. When someone who has never been tothe library before comes to a program, and then keeps coming back becausethey had so much fun, I know that I’mdoing a good job. I am lucky enough towork with a group of people who arehelpful and supportive of my some-times crazy program ideas (ZombieApocalypse Survival Kits???), and tohave a library director who encour-ages me to try different things.

Also, after doing a school visit, I likeseeing the kids in the library. Theyalways say something like, “You’re thatlibrary lady who was at my school!”

Most challenging part of your job:Figuring out why something did notwork. If I have an unsuccessful pro-gram, there could be many reasonswhy it did not go as planned. Was it ona bad night? A bad time? Not enoughadvertising? Was there simply a lackof interest? Finding the answers tothese questions is not always easyand can take time, but when I do getthe answer, it makes the next pro-gram better.

Favorite on-the-job moment, cus-tomer or memory: There are somany! I love it when kids and teenscome up to me after a program andtell me they had fun, or when they areexcited about a book.

I’m not sure about my favorite, but arecent amazing on-the-job momentwas on October 7, the day Blood ofOlympus by Rick Riordan wasreleased. There were two teens thatmy co-workers and I knew would

church. I taught Sunday School for 15years “retiring” this year. I also helpedwith Children’s Church. I feel that giv-ing a child a love for God is one of themost important things we can do. If achild is taught to love and respecttheir Creator, I think they have a bet-ter chance of growing up to love theirneighbor and value a person fromconception to the last breath of life. Ihope I have touched little lives. Iworked at St Peter’s Regional CatholicSchool in Liberty for four years intheir latchkey program and it was ahighlight of my life to give just a tinybit of God’s love to each precious littleperson. Like I said before, I just wish Ihad been given a child of my own butmy husband and I are trying to getcertified in the foster care program.

Time will tell.Favorite quote/ words to live by:

“Pray without ceasing.” My grand-mother was always praying for some-one or something. I remember howshe would say “God have mercy ontheir soul,” when she thought ofsomeone who had passed away or aswe passed the cemetery. She alwayshad a rosary in her pocket. I remem-ber watching her from a distance andnoticing her lips move as she prayedthe rosary in silence. She said, “Whenyou pray for others you find peace.” Itis so true.

It would be great if we could all getback to thinking of others instead ofalways thinking about ourselves. Iwas by her side the night Gram died. She died in peace and I truly believe itwas her faith in God that gave it toher.

HONESDALE, PA — From filling adump truck with 8,000 pennies des-tined for the American Cancer Soci-ety to writing a book on the historyof Honesdale, Pa., Kim Erickson hasmade an indelible mark on WayneCounty.

Yet when honored as a “HiddenJewel” by the Business and Profes-sional Women of Wayne County, Kimtossed the accolades back to hermother, Beach Lake resident PegPearsall.

“If I’m the ‘Jewel,’ my Mom has tobe the ‘Rare Gem’,” she told a capac-ity crowd at Tick-Tock’s in Hones-dale on October 20. “She taught methat there is always someone worseoff than you, so don’t complain –help!”

Kim is the personification of hermother’s mantra. Currently theassistant activities director at EllenMemorial Health Care and Rehabili-tation Center (a local nursing

home), Kim has become the go-tofundraiser for the American CancerSociety, Habitat for Humanity, andthe recent Leadership Wayne-coor-dinated flight of World War II veter-ans visiting Washington, DC’smemorials and Arlington NationalCemetery.

A friend of Kim’s related that she’sthe light and joy of many a nursinghome resident, bringing them cos-tumes for Halloween, taking themout on field trips, painting their nailsin extraordinarily creative ways, andalways ensuring their day is filledwith activity and meaning.

“Kim is a dynamo,” acknowledgedBetty DeMaye Caruth of Businessand Professional Women of WayneCounty. “She has more energy ...than most of the people I know!”

This, after sustaining a skiinginjury that doctors said would pre-vent her from ever walking again. While the resulting issues did forceher to close her Damascus daycare,Kim literally regained her footing

and ended up hired to paint muralsat children’s hospitals in Oklahomaand England.

Betty called Kim “your not-so-average local girl with a passion andcommitment for helping others inher community,” and indeed thecommunity turned out that eveningto shower her with applause andgifts.

Guest speaker Joyce DeBastiani, owner of the Wallflower shop inHonesdale and the Lodge at KeenLake in Waymart, urged the audi-ence to emulate Kim’s enthusiasticvolunteerism.

“We are all each a piece, howeverlarge or small, of the puzzle,” Joyceaffirmed. “We can’t stand alone. Weneed to stand together.”

Kim Erickson, left, was recently honored by the Business and Professional Women of WayneCounty for her many volunteer efforts throughout northeast Pennsylvania. She was givengifts and accolades by BPW President Judy Murphy and others during a dinner at Tick-Tock’sin Honesdale, Pa.
