A Note from the Educator -
Summer Camp Studies have shown that going to summer camp helps youth grow in areas such as making friends, self-confidence, independence, exploring and learning new activities. Even for a short time period, time spent at camp can benefit a child all the way through adulthood. Youth staff practice leadership skills while helping campers too. The skills staff learn help them learn to relate to younger youth and see that younger youth look up to them so they need to do their very best. Burnett County 4-H Summer Camp is a four-day, three-night camp experience for all youth (4-H and non-4-H) who want to experience a variety of activities that are planned, organized and led by the youth staff. We try to keep the price of sending youth to camp affordable. It costs $40 for 4-H camper or $50 for non-4-H camper. This year camp will be held Tuesday-Friday, July 16-19, 2019 at Camp Burnett on Lake 26. Camp applications are included in this newsletter. The 2019 theme is “Out of this World!” An age-appropriate day camp is also being planned for Cloverbuds. Cloverbud Day Camp will be held from 10a.m.-4p.m. on Tuesday, July 16
th at Camp Burnett on
Lake 26 near Danbury. This camp is open to youth who will be entering five-year-old kindergarten, first grade, second grade, or third grade in the fall (or those currently in 4K-2
nd grade this school year). Youth staff will also
plan, organize and lead this camp. The 2019 theme is “Out of this World!” Camp applications are included in this newsletter.

PREMISE ID NUMBER IS REQUIRED if exhibitors are planning to bring any animals to the fair. The fairs must have numbers on file for all animal exhibits including cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas and poultry. Go to www.wiid.org to apply now so you have everything ready for the warm weather we usually have in August and September. AREA ANIMAL SCIENCE DAYS Regional animal science educational opportunities available to Wisconsin 4-H members. Specifically, Area Animal Science Days is a series of four day-long events held around the state in June where youth in the beef, dairy, horse, sheep and swine projects increase their decision making skills and knowledge of animals through judging and grading experiences. Events include evaluation of dairy cattle, horses and meat animals; dairy showmanship contests; hippology (the study of horses); and oral reasons workshops. In addition, each site offers a variety of workshops for small animal projects, which may include rabbits, poultry, dogs, cats or llamas. AASD strives:
To increase the availability of educational
opportunities in the 4-H Animal Science Projects. To increase decision making skills through judging and grading experiences. ● To increase the knowledge of animals through breeding and market evaluation and management information. The AASD event closest to us will be held in Polk County on Tuesday, June 18, 2019. CLOVERBUD PROJECT MEETINGS - Cloverbuds: please reference page 4 of your Cloverbud Activity/Record Book regarding the cancellation policy.
At the April 4-H Cloverbuds meeting, members made Paper Quilt Square to spell their initials using a pattern. Each letter had a different pattern. Amy Kopecky, Orange 4-H club volunteer, led the group in both Siren and Grantsburg. She showed the group a nice variety of quilts for beds and table runners. Thank you Amy for leading both groups and sharing your personal love of fabric quilts with our Cloverbuds!
4-H Connection:
Just like quilts have been one way of communicating family history over time, the 4-H Record Book serves as a way to document growth in the 4-H program. It is most helpful to work on this throughout the 4-H year. The Cloverbud Activity/Record Book was specifically designed to foster this work throughout the year. When youth graduate from Cloverbuds, a different Record Book becomes available and is more open-ended. It is important to work on that Record Book throughout the 4-H year. Aim to at least review your book quarterly to update the
calendar and insert photos. This will save time and avoid undue stress near the Record Book submission deadline.
INVESTIGATE the Cloverbud project at http://fyi.uwex.edu/wi4hcloverbuds/.

Alexis Slater from Wood River Beavers 4-H club, ran her first half marathon at the Disney Princess Half Marathon in Orlando, Florida on February 24, 2019. She ran with her 75 year old Grandmother, Mary and 32 year old sister, Lauren. I began running cross country last fall, but the longest I'd ran prior to this race was 6 miles.
I was very apprehensive running the half marathon's 13.1 miles because I'd never run that far before. Since I was running with family members, I knew I'd have people to tell me if I was having any heat related issues. The temps was 88 de-grees with high humidity and I had heat stroke a few years ago while playing soccer; so I have to be careful in the heat. Even though I was scared, I went and ran through Epcot and Disney World. I discovered that it wasn't as bad as I anticipated and in fact, I thought it was really fun! I would love to do another one in the future and run my own pace, not my grandma's. I'm so glad that I beat my fear and found my new health and fitness love ~ running.
My advice if you're scared to try something new, just go for it. The worst that can happen is you find out something isn't for you. The best thing that can happen is you find a new passion. I encourage you to try a new 4-H project area this year. Have fun!
