Without help: Antal Bujka, a refugee claimant from Hungary, came to Canada with his grandchildren – Robert, 8, andBarbara, 12. The Conservative government’s decision to cut the interim federal health program means refugee claimants willbe left without medical coverage after June 30.

A local group that helps refugee claim-ants is bemoaning government cuts tohealth care that will leave the people theyhelp without medical coverage.

As of June 30, the federal governmentwill no longer be offering supplementalhealth care for refugees through the interimfederal health program.

Currently, under the program, a refu-gee claimant can see a doctor, have someprescriptions covered and get glasses andemergency dental work done.

A proposed 37-storeyapartment tower, withthree-storey townhouses, across from Central Parkpassed second reading atMonday night’s councilmeeting.

Residentsinnearbybuild-ings, including the Parkcreston Patterson Avenue andThe Metropolitan on OliveAvenue, are protesting themove.

Patrick Julien, a residentof The Metropolitan, saidthat he and a group of res-idents are exploring theirlegal options.

Julien was particularlyconcerned about a por-tion of the Barker Avenuecul de sac bulb, which hesaid residents would liketo purchase if it is up forsale by the city. The sec-tion is included in PolygonDevelopments’ proposal forthe site.

“Logically, if the citywants to dispose of someproperty, it should, accord-ing to the Municipal Act,(be available for) the adjoin-ing property owners forconsolidation,” he said.

Julien has been speak-ing with lawyers at Bakerand Baker, a municipal andadministrative law firmin Vancouver, about theplanned development andresidents’ options for stop-ping it.

“There’s no obvious ben-

efit to the City of Burnaby,”he said of the development.“There’s no benefit whatso-ever to the people that livearound here.”

The city’s acting directorof planning and building,Lou Pelletier, spoke to theissue of the cul de sac at thecouncil meeting.

He said that, as the streetwill still be accessible to thepublic, it is merely the right-of-way that is being sold toPolygon, and the city has theright to do that according tothe Community Charter.

Pelletier presented areport to council on the pub-lic hearing for the develop-ments’ rezoning applicationfor the development.

The proposed develop-ment site is comprised ofeight lots along Pattersonand Barker avenues.

The Barker Avenue prop-erties currently have single-family homes on them, andthe Patterson Avenue lotsare occupied by two two-storey apartment buildingswith 16 rental units in total.

The development pro-posal includes 242 apart-ments; a communal lounge, meeting room and gym forresidents, located on theground floor of the tower;landscaped boulevardsand trees along PattersonAvenue; and a central gar-den with a public art instal-lation and a play area.

The proposal includes80,944 square feet of addi-tionalfloorspaceinexchange

for an estimated $7.5 millioncash-in-lieu contribution tothe city’s community ame-nity bonus fund. The reportaddressed some of the con-cerns brought forward byresidents, including consis-tency with the neighbour-hood plan; the building’sheight and density; impacton traffic; privacy; viewand property value issues;the possibility of increasedcrime; and pedestrian andchild safety. The reportfound that the proposalfalls within the MetrotownTown Centre DevelopmentPlan, and staff supportedthe application.

Malcolm Cant, a residentof the Parkcrest condomin-ium building, said he feltthe move to approve thedevelopment was undulyinfluenced by the cash-in-lieu contribution to the cityfor a new community ame-nities centre.

“Where I come from, this would be called a bribe, nothing more and nothingless,” he wrote in an emailto the NOW. “If Burnabycouncil approves this pro-posal, then they will havesold their souls – nothingless and nothing more.

Jane Gottschlag, secre-tary of the Parkcrest strata

council, said on Mondaythat she hopes the moneydoesn’t go to a large com-munity centre in CentralPark, as the neighbourhoodwill need the green spacefor all the new and currentresidents.

“We’rehopingthemoneyis not just for a building builtin Central Park,” she said.“The city said they wouldnot, they said they woulddevelop Central Park into amore family-oriented com-munity area.

“It’s really importantthat they make that anopen area, so people reallyget to know one another,”

Gottschlag added. She said she is disap-

pointed that council did notlisten to her and other resi-dents’ concerns about theheight of the development, and worries it will openup the neighbourhood oflow- to mid-rise buildingsto more highrises.

“Thirty-seven (storeys)to me is a real black eyeto the residents of Burnabywho truly went there tovoice their opinions onbehalf of everyone in thearea,” she said. “It’ll looklike a sore thumb in thatarea. It’s higher than every-thing else.”

Mayor: ‘They put us between a rock and a hard place’pretty clear that June 30 was a firm deadlineand if cities didn’t sign, they would facefinancial consequences such as increasedproperty taxes.

Corrigan wouldn’t give an exact dateon when Burnaby will sign off on the deal, but said it would be before the June 30deadline.

“There is no way I was going to cost

Burnaby taxpayers money,” said Corrigan.“The provincial government put us in a badsituation, they put us between a rock anda hard place by negotiating a contract thatdidn’t address a lot of unresolved issues. …They got the best deal they could becausethe provincial government is afraid to standup to the federal Conservatives.”

Corrigan said that with a provincialelection coming up in less than a year, the

provincial Liberals need to preserve theircentre-right coalition and that meant notoffending the federal Conservative govern-ment.

Corrigan said the holdout cities showeda lot of courage in standing up to the pro-vincial government and by getting an inde-pendent consultant to look at other policingmodels, the municipalities are keeping theirminds open to any and all alternatives.

The financial consequences holdout cit-ies could have faced by not signing the dealincluded the province forcing them to paythe full 100 per cent of the costs for theirpolicing. Under the RCMP contract, thefederal government subsidizes 10 per centof a municipality’s policing costs.

Alternative policing models include amunicipal, a regional, or a Metro Vancouverpolice force.

Katimavik volunteers are planninga national day of action on Saturday,June 23 to promote volunteerism andprotest the government’s decision toend the program’s funding.

Former volunteers that have gonethrough the program will help outat KINA Spirit Day in Burnaby onJune 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at theGreat Bear Pub parking lot, at 5665Kingsway.

KINA Spirit Day is hosted by theKingsway Imperial NeighbourhoodAssociation to bring the community

together for a day of family fun. Theevent includes a show-and-shine cardisplay, a bouncy castle, face paint-ing, a bike parade with a prize for thebest-decorated bike, bike engravingby Burnaby RCMP auxiliary mem-bers, and much more.

The Katimavik alumni will behelping with the event and man-ning an info table for the program.Katimavik sends groups of 11 volun-teers, aged 17 to 21, to work full-timefor six months in several communi-ties across Canada. The program hasbeen around for 35 years, and morethan 300,000 young Canadians haveparticipated. The federal governmenteffectively announced the end of theKatimavik program with the releaseof the latest budget on March 29.

Burnaby resident Justin Chen said

his experience with the program wasfantastic.

“Before Katimavik, I had no direc-tion,” said Chen. “As a UBC stu-dent, I felt lost and just followedmy peers. After my six month jour-ney to Manitoba and north Quebec,I gained valuable professional andsocial skills, learned French and alittle Cree, became capable of orga-nizing events and projects and dis-covered how vast and amazing ourcountry of Canada really is.”

Chen said it was a shamethe program is ending.“I’ve seen the impact it has for thecommunity and young people,”he said. “I’ve seen people who’vechanged as they went though the pro-gram. They’ve discovered what theirlife is about.”

Politicians and governmentscan get into trouble becauseof their legislative policies,

but a more serious kind of trou-ble can emerge from somethingelse: a lack of respect.

And that is precisely the prob-lem facing PremierChristy Clark rightnow. Quite frankly,it appears the voters(a lot of them, anyway) simplydon’t respect her.

Evidence of this can be seenin the spate of recent publicopinion polls that show herapproval rating nose-diving withthe electorate. An Ipsos Reid pollshowed her approval level drop-ping 14 percentage points sinceFebruary, while an Angus Reidpoll showed her to be one of themost unpopular premiers in theentire country.

But polls aside, I’m struckat the near-visceral negativereactions Clark gets from manypeople. We did some person-on-the-street interviews at Globalnews this past week, and whenwe asked for opinions of Clark aspremier the response was ratherstartling.

The people we talked to wereharshly critical and almost mock-ing of her leadership. She wasseen as being in over her head, lacking vision or a game plan andbeing interested more in politi-cal gamesmanship than actuallybeing a leader.

Given the bleak poll findings, these comments are clearly indic-

ative of wider public opinion andas a result put Clark in a verydeep hole that will be very hardto climb out of.

I’m not entirely sure whyshe sparks such emotional andnegative reactions in people. The

fact she’s a woman is nodoubt a factor with somepeople (female politi-cal leaders seem to be

judged more harshly than theirmale counterparts). As unfair asthat is, the truth is that femalepoliticians will always be battlingsexist attitudes.

Some critics call her the“queen of the photo-ops,” givenher constant appearances at gov-ernment announcements. But herpredecessor, Gordon Campbell, also insisted on attending mostof his government’s events, and Idon’t recall much criticism aimedat him for that practice.

However, the photo opapproach means Clark is startingto look like a politician who isconstantly campaigning and notso much leading or governing. This no doubts causes many vot-ers to question her sincerity,

This drop in her personalpopularity has robbed her ofher argument that she is muchmore credible than her party. TheB.C. Liberals still lag behind hernumbers, but the gap has shrunkconsiderably.

She is now descending to thelevel of her party, which spellsdisaster for her and her caucus

It’s a matter of compassion and common senseThere is little doubt the federal

government believes the majority ofCanadians are more concerned with theprice of gas than the plight of refugeescoming to this country.

In fact, the Conservatives are prob-ably correct in thinking thatmost Canadians believe lessmoney spent on refugees willmean more money the federalgovernment can spend on their personaldemands. It’s understandable. Whentimes are tough, many people get scaredand worry about the ability to take care

of themselves and their families. Andit’s also understandable that after yearsof being told stories about immigrantsand refugees ripping off the system, theymay have a jaundiced view of immigra-tion.

In fact, the spectre of refu-gees losing access to our medi-cal system will probably notincite most Canadians to write

to their MP in support of the refugees. But the Conservatives’ move to deny

new refugees access to health care (seestory on page 1) is not only contrary to

Canada’s spirit of compassion, it’s alsoshortsighted.

Under the Conservatives’ new rules, arefugee suffering a medical problem willgo to a hospital and be given a bill forservices. Do we really think that a new, impoverished refugee will be able to paythat bill? And who ends up paying forthose services? Yes, you guessed it – thetaxpayers.

And what about the children? Havewe become so ideologically driven thatwe’ve forgotten children have no sayin where parents take them? Surely the

government can make an exception forthe kids.

We’re certainly not for abusing thesystem. But to deny refugees, who areoften traumatized and still recoveringfrom conditions that Canadians have ahard time even imagining, temporaryaccess to health care seems unnecessarilyheartless. If the government can affordto spend $28 million on the War of 1812celebrations or squander money on a jet, surely we can afford to fix a child’s bro-ken arm, or give a mother some insulinfor diabetes.

Can Clark regainvoters’ respect?

Memories of Burnaby’s pastDear Editor:

Re: Then and NOW: Motoring through Burnaby’shistory, Burnaby NOW.

Read your article re the Silver Bros. Garage, and itbrought back so many memories. I was raised in theKingsway (McKay) area. My father had a radio repairshop, and we lived behind this shop for quite a fewyears in 1935 to 45.

I have many memories of those days: the FordPlant, Kingsway West School (Grades 1 to 8) all aregone now, as are all the little shops owned by somany wonderful people – George and Alma andtheir son Jackie with Nichols Family Meats butchershop; the Pitmman sisters with their dry goods shop;Tommy Yee and his little veggie market; Bailey’sHardware; the pharmacy that made great soft ice

cream (bring your own carton); the 99 Cafe (whereas teeners we spent many hours playing the jukeboxand drinking our Cokes); and of course Miss Hare’sgift shop, which, if you happened to have 10 to 15cents to spend, was a real treasure trove.

Miss Hare was a very sweet old lady who wheezedas she spoke, and we all thought she would die anymoment, but she loved us and always welcomedus into her shop to visit and gaze at all the stuff shehad. Her front window was so full you couldn’t puta dime down without moving something. She oftentook Cookie (my best friend) and I to the back whereshe lived and made us tea (very weak tea), and wewould chat for awhile.

Cookie and I loved to go visit Miss Hare, shopin that treasure trove of stuff and join her for “tea.”She was very sweet and always made us feel very

colleagues come electiontime.

The latest Ipsos Reidpoll showed the NDP lead-ing the B.C. Liberals byhuge margins in all areasof the province, and it alsoshowed a huge gender gap.

Women voters havedeserted the B.C. Liberalsin droves, as women inparticular appear to beturned off by Clark.

Applying the recentpoll numbers to the 2009election results, on a riding-by-riding basis, suggeststhe B.C. Liberals would belucky to win 15 seats if anelection were held todayand would probably be

nearer to a half dozen wins. This bleak situation will

no doubt start whispersabout whether it’s possiblefor the B.C. Liberals to oustClark from the premier’soffice and rally aroundsomeone else to remount acharge against the surgingNew Democrats.

Frankly, I don’t seehow, say, Kevin Falcon orRich Coleman or any othermember of the B.C. Liberalcaucus could right theirparty’s ship. They are alltainted by association withthe Campbell governmentand the HST debacle.

Clark’s personal popu-larity may be plummeting, but I see no evidence to

suggest one of her caucuscolleagues would do muchbetter. Now, I’m not surewhether she can regain herown popularity. Certainly, the gap between the NDPand the B.C. Liberalsshould close at least a bitby the time the electioncampaign rolls around.

But Clark would bewell advised to try some-thing different. What she’sdoing right now clearlyisn’t working – and gettingback the respect of the vot-ers is the only way to eventhink of getting out of thatvery deep hole.

Why not defer your taxes?Dear Editor:

Re: Tax hikes ‘outrageous,’ Letters to theeditor, Burnaby NOW, June 1.

Your correspondent Frank DiCesarelaments the plight of seniors due to theincrease in property tax. For those whoare unaware of it, we seniors are able todefer our property tax until such time asthe property is sold. I believe also that theincrease in value of property more thanoffsets any increase in tax.

Why pick on workers?Dear Editor:

Re: Flaherty finds deep well of stupidity,In My Opinion, Burnaby NOW, June 1.

After reading Matthew Claxton’s articleI was compelled to write a response. Firstly, thank you for your column. I found it to be

reassuring to know that there are those whoare not fooled into thinking that anythingour government does for us is not good.Matter of fact, the opposite is most often thetrue case.

When I read the newspapers I oftencringe and feel horrible when I learn of theongoing suffering of good honest peoplejust trying to make a living or, as it standsnow, trying to keep their heads above thewater.

I am a seasonal worker and, from what Iam gathering, soon to be an extinct breed ofworker. All throughout my adult life I havehad to make constant career adaptationsin order to keep working. Not an easy taskwhen I have ADD as diagnosed, however,I have learned that there is no sympathyfrom our government for those of us inflict-ed with mental health issues.

I did manage to find a decent-payingjob that is best suited for my mental issues. As it turns out it is a seasonal one. I havebeen at this job for four years, whereas thisupcoming year I have a real decent chanceat getting more work and perhaps evengetting full-time due to the attrition of thesenior workers soon to be retiring. I thoughtI had made it – at least until I learned thatthe Tories have an axe to grind with sea-sonal workers, who according to Flahertyare not wanting to work.

I can assure you that to go from $23 perhour to having to accept $10 an hour isnothing that any one of the critics woulddo if the tables were turned. The govern-ment needs an enema, starting with thehigh salaries that are out of touch with uspeasants. And I am not inclined to want topay for EI benefits if I can not collect them.Rather, why don’t we cut into the generouspensions that all of our politicians are col-lecting. There are other ways to find moniesor cut back other than to keep hounding thelow income to pay for the rich.

“We’re dealing with a very traumatized population, and they’re impoverished at the same time, and now we’redealing with health,” Kinnie said.

“It’s going to limit their options for accessing healthcare, and in some cases, it’s going to … bar them from thehealth-care system,” Kinnie said.

The changes affect newly arrived refugees, people whooften apply for a work permit while they are waiting fortheir claim to be processed. Once a refugee claimant hasa permit, which usually takes a few months, he or she canapply for provincial health-care coverage. But the interimfederal health program covers newly arrived refugees forthose months before the work permit is ready.

“If they went to the hospital and had a medical emer-gency, they would be treated, but they would receive afull-price bill,” Kinnie said. “Really, what the federal gov-ernment is doing is placing the burden on our provincialhospitals and our provincial health-care program. ... Therefugee is going to go to the hospital in a medical emer-gency. They are going to be given a bill they can’t pay.”

Another worry for Kinnie is the federal government’sBill-C31, which creates a new system with two classes ofrefugee claimants: those who come from a “designatedcountry of origin” and those who do not. Designated coun-tries of origin (as determined by the immigration minister)are considered safe countries that do not produce refugees.People from designated countries of origin will get nohealth-care coverage, unless they have some communica-ble disease, like tuberculosis, that puts public health at risk. The refugees who are in the country legally and appealingtheir case will lose access to health care.

Burnaby resident Antal Bujka came to Canada as a refu-gee with his daughter and two grandchildren about a yearago. Bujka is of Roma descent and comes from Hungary. He described his country as a place where Roma peopleare denied work, discriminated against, persecuted andthreatened by roaming gangs of racist skinheads. Due tocomplications with his file, Bujka, who has diabetes, hasnot received a work permit. He’s also had problems gettinghis prescriptions covered under the current interim federalhealth program and has been off his diabetes medicationfor months.

With the impending Bill C-31 and its new classes ofrefugees, someone like Bujka could easily be consideredas a person from a “designated country of origin” if theimmigration minister decides Hungary is safe, although itmay not be hospitable for Roma. That would leave Bujkawithout any health-care coverage.

Speaking through a translator, Bujka challenged thepolicy makers behind the bill, especially those who are notwhite, to travel to certain areas of his country after dark.

“I would be curious if he still thinks it’s a safe country,”Bujka said.

Kinnie said the changes will force people like Bujka tochoose between eating food or paying rent and gettingmedical care, or it will force the health system to incurdebts that can’t be collected.

“On many different levels, it’s frustrating,” Kinnie said.Dr. Philip Berger, chief of the department of family and

community medicine at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto,is one of the founding members of the Canadian Doctorsfor Refugee Care, a group that organized a national day ofaction on Monday, June 18, with more than 2,000 doctorsand health-care professionals protesting the cuts.

“We are calling for a complete rescinding of the pro-posed changes to the interim federal health program,”Berger said.

Berger pointed out that a refugee who has angina willno longer have their medication covered.

“It’s the same with any other chronic condition,” hesaid. “Those who are awaiting appeal will have access tovirtually no medical care.”

Berger said the federal government has been misleadingCanadians.

“The government claims it’s a matter of equity,” Bergersaid. “The fact is (refugees) will be getting drastically lessthan Canadians under these changes. … Our view is theyshould stop bullying defenseless and powerless people. …Stop picking on people who are fleeing for their lives fromcountries where they are persecuted.”

Berger cited a case at St. Michael’s Hospital, where anobstetrician was asked by a refugee patient to have herbaby delivered prematurely, before June 30 when the cutscome in effect so she would still have medical coverage.

“That is the terror this government has inflicted onrefugees in Canada. We won’t forget, none of us, the thou-sands of health-care workers across Canada will not for-get,” Berger said. “The federal government has sparked aninsurrection amongst doctors and health-care professionalsacross Canada.”

Burnaby council has approved plans tocontrol the city’s knotweed problem withan herbicide stem injection trial.

Knotweed is considered the fifthmost abundant invasive plant species inBurnaby out of 15 that were surveyedin 2009, according to a report from thedirector of parks, recreation and culturalservices, Dave Ellenwood.

In 2009, it was found in 69 of Burnaby’s147 parks and covered 6.71 hectares ofpark space, the report added.

Manual control of the knotweed plants

in 2010 resulted in larger infestations, sothe city has decided to conduct an herbi-cide injection trial, using glyphosate – theprimary ingredient in RoundUp – andinjecting it directly into the plant stems.

The trial will take place at a patch inTaylor Park, a patch in Fraser ForeshorePark, and a patch in the Burnaby Mountainconservation area.

There will be a follow-up treatmentthree to four weeks after the initial treat-ment, and the injections will be repeatedagain in early fall, according to the report.

If the trial is successful, city staff willseek approval for trial injections at otherparks, the report added.

Building permits up in 2012The City of Burnaby has issued 780

building permits thus far for 2012, accord-ing to a staff report by Lou Pelletier, actingdirector of Burnaby’s planning and build-ing department.

The report, which was issued at the endof May, states that 692 permits were issuedin 2011, and 725 were issued in 2010.

But the permits have brought in slightlyless this year than in the past two – $203million as of May 31, 2012. The total value

of permits in 2011 was $210 million, and in2010 was $206 million.

The majority of commercial build-ing permits – 204 – were for alterationsand repairs, and the majority of indus-trial building permits – 100 – were also foralterations and repairs.

In May, 152 permits were issued, bring-ing in $34.6 million – 75 of those were foralterations and repairs.

Feedinglocalfamilies

The B.C. Muslim Association’s Al-Salaam mosque is celebrating five years offeeding local families.

The association has been running a foodbank out of the mosque on Canada Waysince 2007 and is expected to distribute42,000 pounds of food this year.

“It’s amazing because when we started,it was only fivefamilies,” saidImaad Ali, themosque’s com-munity outreachdirector.

According toAli, the mosqueinitially donatedto the GreaterVancouver FoodBank Society, but

then members realized there was a need tofeed local families.

“We realized this was happening in ourown backyards, so we decided to start ourown food bank,” he said.

The mosque’s food bank opened in2007, serving just five local needy families. The program has grown tenfold, with newapplications coming in every week frompeople needing food.

“We get applications pretty much fromany family. What we ask them to do is pro-

vide a little bit of information. Generally,we ask for their income tax return,” Alisaid, adding food distribution is based onneed.

“If someone has a family of five, wemake sure they get extra food,” he said.

The program is funded by food andcash donations from the congregation, andthe companies the mosque buys food from

offer generous discounts.“That’s a huge help,” Ali said.On the first Sunday of each month, vol-

unteers pack the food.Ali estimates the mosque feeds more

than 50 families each month. They receivea 70-pound basket of items, breakfast cere-al, crackers, fresh bread, sugar, salt, tea, coffee, juice, margarine, peas and much

more. Most of the recipients are from war-torn countries in Africa, Afghanistan andIraq.

To donate to the mosque’s food bankprogram,[email protected]. To sign up for the food bankprogram, go to the mosque on Fridays, and apply in person. For more informa-tion, go to www.bcmaburnaby.org.

How to battle a beetle larvae infestation

Q: We have a snowball bushabout 40 years old, and forthe past three to four yearswe have been fighting blackworms on the leaves. We havetried Sticky Foot around thetrunk and numerous spray-ings of insecticidal soap andnothing helps. Can you helpus save this old bush?

Keith, via e-mail

A: Your problem soundslike the viburnum leafbeetle.

Sticky material aroundthe trunk won’t helpbecause the adults of thelarvae that eat the leavescan fly to the bushes to laytheir eggs on the twigs.

You can start control-ling the beetle by examin-ing the twigs for tiny blackspots. These are clusters ofbeetle eggs which are laidin tiny cavities and sealedwith a mix of chewedwood and beetle feces. These are usually on thetiny fragile twigs at theoutside of the bush.

Pruning these twigsand garbaging them willremove a lot of eggs. Eachblack spot holds abouteight. But because the lar-vae hatch in May, you’reprobably too late for prun-ing this year. But do startpruning in fall or duringthe winter. The more eggsyou can garbage, the fewerworms next year.

In June, the larvae willdrop down to the soil andgo into a chrysalis stage.Starting in early July, ifyou have bare soil underyour viburnums, youcould try removing the topinch of earth and buryingit in a deep hole or puttingit in a garbage bag, sealingit and keeping it for a fewmonths. In fall, you shouldbe safe to dump this earthsomewhere in your gar-den. This should removequite a few of the chrysa-lises which hatch intobeetles in late July. Anychrysalis you miss willturn into a beetle that canlay several hundred eggsover the next two-and-ahalf months.

This is a control meth-od. Some eggs and chrysa-lises will always get awayfrom you, or beetles couldfly in from the neigh-bours. But it’s worth doing

because some viburnumsdie after several years ofthis beetle’s work.

◆Q: I haven’t removed my

dahlias from the ground sinceplanting them last year, andthey have started sprouting. Is it too late to dig them upand divide them? Do you

need to divide them everyyear?

Michelle,Vancouver

A: Dahlias don’t have to

be divided every year. Some coastal gardenersin well-drained situationsdeliberately leave them inthe soil during the winter.

In mild winters, they cancome back.

You still have a fewmore nights to catchsome local talent

in the latest Arts ClubTheatre musical.

Cole Porter’s HighSociety continues until June24.

It features Burnaby’sown Steve Maddock asGeorge Kittredge, the stol-id fiancé of wealthy social-ite Tracy Lord (JenniferLines) – who may or maynot lose his betrothed toeither her dapper ex-hus-band Dexter Haven (ToddTalbot) or the reporterMike Connor (DanielArnold).

Maddock’s alwaysstellar vocal chops are inevidence throughout theshow – most particularlyin I Worship You, when hisgolden baritone fills thetheatre.

Another local standoutis Lauren Bowler as LizImbrie. Bowler – who co-owns the Great Wall TeaCo. at New Westminster’sRiver Market – provides

some of the most thought-ful acting and touchingsinging of the night, partic-ularly with her emotionalrendition of He’s a RightGuy.

They’re joined by a castof faces, both familiar andnew, that do justice to alight and sparkling pro-

duction.Talbot, in particular,

continues to prove whyhe’s one of Vancouver’sfavourite song-and-dancemen, as his Dexter charmshis way into pretty mucheveryone’s hearts.

Another treat comes

from Norman Browning’s delightfully drunkenUncle Willie.

But it’s the youngest cast member – teenagenewcomer Bridget Esler as Tracy’s younger sister,Dinah – who pretty much steals the show, with acombination of acting ability, singing talent andfresh-faced charm that promises to take her far.

If you’ve seen either of the movie versionsof the story – The Philadelphia Story (1940) withKatharine Hepburn, Cary Grant and JamesStewart, or High Society (1956) with Grace Kelly,Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby – the play won’toffer any big surprises.

But it will offer a charming and refreshingnight out and plenty of reasons to leave the the-atre humming.

High Society is on at the Stanley IndustrialAlliance Stage until June 24. It’s on Wednesdaysthrough Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Wednesdays,Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $29 to $70. Call the Arts Club boxoffice at 604-687-1644 or visit www.artsclub.com.

A pianist from Burnaby is a ris-ing star on Canada’s classical musicscene.

Christopher Kusuhara was a final-ist in the recent Stepping Stone 2012competition, a national contest open totop young classical performers.

It’s a contest that has launched thecareers of renowned Canadian classi-cal musicians including pianists LouisLortie and Marc-André Hamelin, flutist Susan Hoeppner and AnnaleePatipatanakoon of the Gryphon Trio.

Kusuhara earned $1,000 for emerg-ing as a finalist after four rounds ofcompetition in Ottawa – the initialaudition process, which narrowed thefield to 30, followed by an elimina-tion round, a semifinal round and thefinals.

The competition was won by

recorder player Vincent Lauzer ofMontreal, with pianist Michelle YelinNam of Edmonton in second andsoprano Florie Valiquette of Montrealin third.

Pianist Steven Massicotteof Montreal and violinistAlexander Read of Montrealwere also finalists.

It’s not the first prestigiousaward for Kusuhara, who isnow living in Montreal andstudying on scholarship atMcGill University.

He represented B.C. at theNational Music Festival inMontreal in 2010. Most recent-ly, he placed first in the seniorcategory at the Vancouver Women’sMusical Society’s piano competition.

Previously, he has won many

TASTE

As the final entry of aseries on perfectinghomemade burg-

ers, this one will focus onburger toppings and breadselection. If you missedeither two of my previouscolumns on meat selection,or ingredients to add to theburger mix, please emailme at [email protected],and I will be more thanhappy to send them to you.

When building a burgerfrom scratch, many peoplewill tend to be scant withthe toppings in order tominimize the amount ofprep, but they’re miss-ing the best opportunityto complement the pattythat they proudly created.Going without complemen-tary toppings is like havingmashed potatoes without

the gravy, or apple piewithout the ice cream.

Mayo, mustard, relishand ketchup are obvi-ous additions. A classic, but essential way to alsotop any burger would bewith the traditional let-tuce, tomato and cheese, but there any many othersto consider: bacon, onion(fresh or sautéed), pick-les, etc. The main thingto remember that whenadding vegetables (suchas lettuce and tomato),make sure you season themwith salt and pepper – thisone step will dramaticallyenhance the flavour of yourfinished burger.

The toppings don’t haveto stop there. There arecountless others that couldcrown your masterpieceThey could be hot sauces, ethnic sauces, differenttypes of mustards, saladdressings, dips, spreads, olives, sundried tomatoesand an assortment of chees-es, for example.

The type of bread/bunyou choose could be basedon a number of factors.

Maybe you are creating aburger of a certain ethniccuisine, such as an Italianburger; then I would use atype of Italian bread, like aciabatta bun, for example.Or perhaps your burgersare quite messy becausethey are dripping withtoppings; then I suggesta denser type bread/bunto help make it more firmwhen it comes to eating theburger. Try to stay awayfrom the plain, generic, small white burger buns. Also, toasting the bread/buns on the grill alwaysadds more texture/flavourto your finished burger;brush lightly with oil andput directly on the grates ofyour barbecue until lightlycharred and toasted.

One last note, alwaysmelt the cheese onto theburger patty during the lastpart of the cooking time, ifusing a melt-able cheese.Melted gooey cheese ismore appealing not only intaste but in presentation.

Love is the core ofour lives. It is thepurpose, passion and

meaning of life. To loveand be loved is the pointof it all.

Yet love is a complexexperience and a confus-ing word. Love comes inmany forms – as many asthe number of humans thathave ever lived.

I see love as a poten-

tial spiritual experience– to see and be seen as wereally are – beyond whatwe each appear to be. Tolove is to recognize thedivine in another person, and with that recognition, dedication, compassionand caring flow naturally. To be loved this way is likecoming home, finding yourauthentic self and discover-ing that you are not alone.

Life is all about relation-ships, and love is the pointof it all. Life is imperfect,we are all flawed, life isunpredictable, and we allmake mistakes. We wasteour time and energy, westray from our paths, andwe harm each other. Yetlove makes it worthwhile

and allows us to forgiveothers and ourselves.

Agape – or uncondition-al love – is an ideal formof love. It is the perfect,all-forgiving love of parentsfor their children. But eventhe most devoted motheror father falls short of per-fection.

We may search ourwhole lives for the perfectsoul mate – one whom welove without judgment orreservation, one who lovesus the same perfect way,but we will never find thatperfection because we areeach human.

We must accept andappreciate love just as wehave received it in all itshuman imperfection.

It is through us thatlove is received … andexpressed. It is in our lives, through our actions, in ourwords and in our relation-ships that divine love ismanifest. But, of course, weare human – imperfect, frailand fallible. We love imper-fectly, and we do not fullyappreciate the love that wereceive.

But that is how we expe-rience love – divine love, unconditional love, com-passion and grace – filteredby the passions and hungerof our bodies, clouded byour limited minds and nar-rowed by our little selves.

We must not only lovethe ones we’re with. Wemust accept the love we

have been given.This morning, my

thoughts began with aprayer of appreciation forlove in my life – in thepast and in the present, asI have received it, partlythrough the grace of theevents and circumstancesof my life but primarilythrough my important rela-tionships.

I am thankful for love –perfect and unconditional –as manifest and expressedin my imperfect relation-ships. I accept and appreci-ate that love as expressedby my wife in our longrelationship, in her concernand care for me, our homeand our children. I appreci-ate the love of each of my

children, the experienceswe have shared, in sharedadventures, challenges andmemories.

I appreciate divine lovethrough my relationshipswith my parents, eachexpressing love in theirown ways, with my sisterand with my brother.

I am thankful forthe love received andexpressed in my deepestfriendships. I am gratefulfor the gift of my work– and the opportunity toexpress unconditional lovein the care of my patients.

Dear Tom and Ray:I am a 76-year-old

woman, recently engagedto an 80-year-old man. Weare truly best friends andagree on everything, exceptone thing. He drives a 2004Lincoln Town Car that weaffectionately call the “PimpMobile.” He won’t fill up the

gas tank until the light comeson and it pings. I tell himthis is hard on the fuel pumpand that I have heard youstate this. Would you pleaseclarify this? Our future wed-ded bliss is in jeopardy. Weboth enjoy your radio showand your columns. Thanks.

– Annie and JackTOM: Gee, Annie, wehave mentioned that, inour opinion, habituallydriving a car on empty canshorten the life of the fuelpump.RAY: The reason we thinkthat is because the pumpsits inside the gas tank, and so it’s cooled by thegasoline it’s submerged in.

Or not cooled by the gaso-line it’s not submerged in,if you never put more thantwo gallons of gas into thecar.TOM: Now, by how muchmight it shorten the life ofa fuel pump? We have noidea. It just makes senseto us that a pump that’sconstantly running hotwill conk out sooner thana pump that is properlycooled.RAY: But as long as he’sfilling the tank completelywhen it’s empty, he’sprobably doing little to nodamage. And at a certainage, you have to worrymore about his pump

failing than the PimpMobile’s!TOM: I’m guessing whatreally bothers you, Annie,is the anxiety that comeswith running precariouslylow on fuel all the time. Ifyou’re not someone who’seager to hike five milesback to the nearest gasstation if he miscalculates, this can cause a certainamount of continual, andunnecessary, stress.RAY: So, we think that inthe interest of marital har-mony, Jack should be lessconcerned with how oftenhe has to stop for fuel, andmore concerned with hisfuture wife’s peace and

comfort.TOM: That may meanaltering his habits a bit,but so what? He’s still ayoung fella. You can’t tellme he’s stuck in his waysat a mere 80!RAY: So, instead of mak-ing this a mechanical argu-ment, Annie, if driving onfumes causes you stress, tell Jack that. And ask himif, for your peace of mindand comfort, he would bewilling to fill up the tankwhen it gets to a quarter-full.TOM: And then you cando something equallyconsiderate for him. Likenot swap his Preparation

H with his Dentu-Cremewhen he’s not looking.Have a wonderful time,you two!

Lakers hold onto first despiteSunday setback

There are no nights offin the Western LacrosseAssociation anymore.

The Burnaby Lakers, who should have learnedthat simple lesson after a9-9 draw against MapleRidge on June 8, droppedthe season series betweenthe two teams following a9-5 defeat to the Burrardson Sunday.

Former Burnaby backupDrew Dickie was the mainculprit, back-stopping thewin while earn-ing the game’sfirst star stop-ping 34 shotsfor the last-place Burrards.

Just twodays earlier, the senior ALakers chalkedup their firstwin and thirdresult without aloss in overtimeon Friday to move into ashare of first place.

In a rare Friday awayfrom home, Burnaby trav-elled to Vancouver Islandand did what no club hadyet managed to do this sea-son, beating the VictoriaShamrocks 10-9 in over-time at the Bear MountainArena.

The win kept Burnabyatop the league standingswith a share of the leadwith both Victoria and theLangley Thunder.

But Sunday in MapleRidge was a completereversal of fortunes.

“It’s a competitiveleague, anybody can behad on any night. If you’rethere at the end you canwin, but we didn’t playwell,” said Burnaby headcoach Bob Johnston.

Maple Ridge explod-ed for seven goals in themiddle period, victimizingboth starter Joe Bell andbackup Devon Winters, who allowed four goalson 10 shots in a 14-minutespan and was replaced byBell in the final period.

“I don’t think our focuswas there. We had thatbig win on the Island (onFriday), and I don’t thinkwe were ready to go,”Johnston added.

Dane Stevens led the

Lakers with a goal andthree assists, while ColtonClark potted a pair of tal-lies.

In Victoria, Burnabytook the lead on ShaunDhaliwal’s second goal ofthe game midway throughthe middle period andkept the pressure on theShamrocks despite a three-goal rally by the hometeam that sent the gameinto extra time.

Matt Quinton re-estab-lished the Lakers’ second-period lead at 6-5 with his

second goal ofthe game fromDhaliwal andClark, in hisfirst game backoff injury.

R o o k i eJackson Decker,with his firstWLA tally, andClark from PeteM c F e t r i d g eand Decker,scored 31 sec-onds apart tostart the third

period and give the Lakersan 8-5 advantage.

But that lead was short-lived as Victoria drew evenon two power-play goalsfrom Ryan Benesch anda single counter from JeffShattler.

In the extra time,Benesch put Victoria aheadwith his game-high fourthgoal of the game.

But Scott Jones, with hisninth and 10th goals of theyear, less than a minuteapart, put Burnaby back inthe lead for good late in thegame.

Bell was solid betweenthe pipes for the Lakers, stopping 41 ‘Rock shotsfired his way.

First-year forwardCasey Jackson contributedthree assists to the Burnabyscoreline.

This week, Burnaby willhave to be ready and onits game in order to avoidany other surprise setbacksagainst a pair of 4-4 clubs.

The Lakers are atQueen’s Park ArenaThursday against theNew WestminsterSalmonbellies.

On the followingday, Burnaby hosts theCoquitlam Adanacs at theBill Copeland Sports Centreon Friday. Both games are7:45 p.m. starts.

Burnaby Lake wasundefeated in the elitemen’s division, includ-ing a resounding 42-0 vic-tory over Bayside in thechampionship final at theVancouver Rugby Sevenstournament.

Tournament MVP andBurnaby Central Secondarygrad Admir Cejvanovic ledthe blue-on-blue Lakerswith two tries and stellarshowing of tackling in thefinal match.

Burnaby Lake was aperfect 3-0 in pool play, winning 19-5 over hostMeraloma, 12-5 over theYoungbucks and 28-5 overSeattle.

The Lakers then wenton to edge the ‘Lomas 12-5in the semifinals.

“We came out slow, and the heavy rain didn’thelp us much in the firsttwo games, but in the thirdagainst Seattle we reallybacked ourselves and hitourstride,”saidCejvanovic,in a B.C. Rugby release. “Itwas great to beat Baysidein the final as we have astrong rivalry against thoseguys. Hopefully, we cankeep the momentum goingin the series, when we hostour tournament in a fewweeks’ time.”

The defending champi-on Burnaby Lake womendid not fare as well, win-ning just once in threestarts at the Vancouvertourney.

That win was againstthe eventual championsthe Mudhens from Seattlein preliminary play.

McKenzie, one of the WingsGymnastic Society’s longest-servinghome-grown coaches, will be leavingthe Lower Mainland at the end of thismonth to start a new chapter in her lifein Edmonton, after 27 years as a com-petitor and coach with the Cameron reccentre gym club.

“It’s what I know and what I’m usedto. Now that it’s going to be gone, I’mnot sure how I’m going to deal withit,” said McKenzie, who has accepteda position as a teacher of special needschildren in Edmonton. “I’m going tomiss it, for sure.”

McKenzie grew up in Burnaby and, from the time she turned seven to thepresent day, has called Wings her recre-ational home.

She competed at Wings for nineyears and became one of the club’s top

gymnasts of her day, reaching a then-provincial B standard and a place at theB.C. Winter Games.

After graduating from Cariboo HillSecondary School, McKenzie contin-ued coaching gymnastics at the EastBurnaby centre.

“Definitely coaching was my firstjob,” she said.

Through Wings, McKenzie, now 34,found her life’s calling.

“After a couple of years, I just knewit’s what I wanted to do – work withkids,” she added.

“It’s hard because sometimes I don’teven think about it. I have three jobsand work between 10- and 12-hourdays. I can go there and forget abouteverything else, and my spirits are lift-ed,” McKenzie added.

Wings was, and continues to still be,a special place in the heart of those whowork and train there, McKenzie said.

The Burnaby Lakers worked their wayout of the B.C. Junior Lacrosse Leagueforest basement with a 7-6 felling of theNanaimo Timbermen.

The junior A Lakers trailed for just oneminute and 19 seconds of the openingperiod en route to their one-goal win anda one-point lead over their Nanaimo hostson Saturday.

Josh Simons led the Lakers with a pairof goals, the first coming in the final min-ute of the middle period on a short-mansituation that put the visitors up 5-4 head-ing into the final frame.

His second, and team-high 14th goal ofthe season, proved the game-winner.

Ryan Watson also tallied a pair for theLakers, including the Lakers’ opening goalthat tied the contest 1-1 in the second min-ute of play.

Bryan Gillis counted a shorthandedmarker less than midway through the firstperiod that gave the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Xander McDonald had his best outingin the Burnaby cage this season, stopping29 Nanaimo shots for his first win thisyear.

Burnaby carried some of that momen-tum into Sunday’s matchup with the PortCoquitlam Saints.

But bad luck and not a lack of effort ledto a 10-6 loss at the Bill Copeland SportsCentre.

Burnaby trailed 6-5 early in the finalframe on back-to-back goals by BrendanShea between the second and third peri-ods, but two PoCo goals following a four-minute back checking minutes later proveda back-breaker for the Lakers.

“It was a hard hole to get out of,” saidBurnaby assistant captain Kris Liset.

“The defence played well. PoCo hasbeen putting in a lot of goals lately, andwe held them to 10, but honestly, four wegave to them,” said Burnaby head coachJohn Wilson.

Burnaby played New West on Tuesday(after NOW deadlines) and is back in PoCoon Thursday.

has embraced that belief from Day 1 andattempted to make the experience one offun first for the participant.

“It’s a different kind of way of doingthings,” McKenzie said. “I was alwaysquite happy there. Manytimes, I was competingagainst girls who were prac-tising as many as three timesas many hours as I was.”

But as competitive asMcKenzie became, she neverfelt compelled to move toa more challenging outside-the-club program.

She is not alone. Some ofthe coaches McKenzie worksalongside now were justyoung five-year-olds whenshe first took them under herprotective wing.

In fact, of the 22 currentcoaches at Wings most ofthem began as one-timegymnasts, McKenzie said.

She estimates that as many as 50 per centof the competitive gymnasts come back toWings to lend a hand at some point.

“It’s the Wings family,” she said. With less than two weeks to go before

she starts her new life in Alberta, McKenzieis beginning to think abouthow she will even start tosay goodbye.

“It’s incredible. All I canthink about is it’s been mylife and now I’m going to dowithout it,” McKenzie said.“It’s been so much a part ofmy life.”

“At first, the prospectof starting a new life inEdmonton was exciting, butnow it’s getting a bit moreemotional.

“At first, I could not wait, but now the emotions arecoming into play.”

In Loving Memory ofJOHN A. SIMPSON

Sep 05, 1943 - Jun 18, 2011Sunrise: September 05, 1943-Sunset: June 18, 2011.In loving memory of a dear, devoted husband, father, andgrandfather.Remembering you is easy.We do it everyday. Missingyou is the hardest part, as itnever goes away. To hearyour voice, to see your smile,to sit with you and talk, would be our greatest wishtoday but we will alwayshave your heart. Time mayhide the sadness like thesmiles that hide the tears butthe treasured memoriesnever fade despite thepassing year. With tender love and deepregret, we who love you willnever forget.

Love you forever - Pamela,Kim, Grant, & Janis.

Grandchildren: Lindsay,Matthew, Cole, James,

and Natalie

Megan Ruth GundersonFeb. 9, 1993-June 20, 1996

It’s been sixteen yearsBut the pain never goes awayThe wounds are not so raw

But we cannot forget that day.I remember when you were

bornYou fought so hard to live

We lost you much too soonWhen you had so much to give.

You should be going for yourfirst legal drink

And we should be watchingyou misbehave

Instead of spending yournineteenth birthday

Visiting you at your grave. You brightened the lives of

manyIn the short time you were hereThough we would have loved

more timeWe will cherish every year.

Your sisters and cousins arewonderful

They are growing up so fastAnd though their futures are

brightThey will never forget the past.We will always love you Megan

We still miss you every dayThe years may pass us byBut the memories are here

to stay.Love

Auntie Grace

Each number can appear only once in each row, columnand box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues alreadyprovided in the boxes. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, columnand box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues alreadyprovided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
