A Brief History of St. Mary’s Cemetery

In 1856 Fr. Edward McGowan purchased 1.8 acres of land off of East Ave to be used for a Catholic Cemetery. In 1862 Nativity became part of the Diocese of Rochester. Between 1868 and 1890 the diocese records show that 246 people were buried in the cemetery (122 Adults, 124 children). In 1892 Mt. Olivet was formed and no more burials were done in St. Mary’s. Some time in the 1950’s “work” occurred in the cemetery under the direction of Fr. Lintz that involved bulldozing. Some graves were moved to Mt. Olivet and other cemeteries. After this period the remaining stones were no longer in their original places, but scattered, stacked and buried in the west hedgerow. In 1990-1991 the Town of Clarkson and Hazel Kleinback completed a partial restoration of the cemetery with the knowledge of Fr. Roy Kiggins of Nativity. The town built a berm, stacked approximately 100 stones around it and poured a ridge of concrete around it to help hold them in place. A “re-dedication took place on June 26, 1991. The only stone presumed to be in its original place is the Fitzpatrick monument on the north end of the cemetery. In 2004 Lisa Jackson completed research on the cemetery and presented the findings to the Cemetery Board of Mt. Olivet.

In the fall of 2007 the Confirmation Class at the Newman Center in Brockport began a service project dedicated to improving the current state of the cemetery. They worked in the cemetery to uncover “lost stones”. They found approximately 25 stones partially buried or buried in the hedgerow that were previously listed as “no stones found” or not recorded as burials at all. It is that group that is responsible for typing this list and providing copies to: The Town of Clarkson, Nativity of the BVM, Diocese of Rochester and Seymour Library.

The Brockport correspondent of the Catholic Times says in regard to the Catholic cemetery at this village: Something should be done to drain the Catholic cemetery. As soon as a grave is dug it fills up with water, and some of the graves are so badly sunken that they look as if they had been opened and robbed. As the cemetery is close by a valley, it might be drained as suggested, and without expense.
