KCKCC Approves Provider for Childcare Center

Kansas City Kansas Community College isproud to announce that Little Leaders ofKCK has been chosen as the operator ofthe childcare center located on KCKCC’sMain Campus.

The KCKCC Board of Trustees approvedthe new operator at its June 2019meeting. Little Leaders of KCK is ownedby Christi Eaton and Kim Maples. Eaton,executive director of Little Leaders, has a bachelor’s degree in early childhood andelementary education as well as a master’s degree in teaching and leadership. Shereceived National Board Certification in 2006. Maples, executive operating director, hasa bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in curriculum andinstruction. Both have more than 45 years of combined experience in educationincluding successfully operating a childcare center for 13 years. Little Leaders of KCKwill operate the center on KCKCC’s Main Campus next to Midwest Credit Union.

The center is expected to open Sept. 3 with spots available for children 12 months to 6-years-old. This is a tentative start date dependent on the completion of constructionat the center as well as state licensing. A discount will be available for KCKCC students,faculty and staff. Children at the center will spend half of the day engaged ineducational opportunities in the areas of literacy, math, self-help and social skills. Theother half will be focused on arts and crafts, music and movement, art and musicappreciation and hands-on science experiments. The idea is to promote childdevelopment while getting them ready to enter elementary school.

KCKCC Volunteers at Heart of America Stand Down Event

KCKCC faculty, staff and students volunteered June 7 at the Heart of America StandDown for Veteran's event.

Heart of America Stand Down brings together hundreds of community service groupsand organizations from the Kansas City area to provide assistance to help rid the

barriers that prevent homeless veterans from re-entering society as engaged,productive citizens, living fulfilling lives. Assistance offered includes medical, substanceabuse, legal issues, taxes, housing and utility assistance, haircuts, family counseling,spiritual, mentorships, educational and employment opportunities.

Burgette Named KCKCC Men's Basketball Coach

No sooner than he learned he would be the new men’sbasketball coach at KCKCC, the recruiting began forBrandon Burgette.

A graduate of Lee’s Summit North High School,Burgette brings nine years of coaching experience tothe position, the last seven at two of the top NJCAAprograms in the nation – four at Indian Hills CommunityCollege in Ottumwa, Iowa and the last three at JohnsonCounty Community College. A standout player atSouthwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., Burgette was astudent assistant at Southwest for two years. He alsoplayed professionally for two years with the SpringfieldThrill of the United States Basketball and for the pastthree years, has directed his own basketball trainingservice, BreedBallers.

Burgette would like nothing better than to add a men’snational championship to the two won in the past four years by the KCKCC women’sbasketball team. In his two years as a player at Southwest Baptist, the Bearcats wontwo MIAA titles and two NCAA DII national tournament appearances. Averaging 9.8points in his career, he was voted Sixth Man of the Year in 2009. In his four years as anassistant at Indian Hills, the team made three trips to the NJCAA DI national

tournament and finished runner-up in 2013-14.

Burgette earned his bachelor’s degree in community recreation from Southwest Baptistand a master’s degree in sports marketing from the University of Central Missouri. Heand his life, Briana, have a son, Brayden, and live in Lee’s Summit.

KCKCC Night at the Wyandotte County Fair

The Wyandotte County Fair in Kansas City, Kan. isback July 9-13 at the Wyandotte County Fair Groundsand will be better than ever!

New this year is Kansas City Kansas CommunityCollege Night, which is July 12. Any individual whostates they are an alumni or student of KCKCC will begiven free admission to the fair that night. Guests canpurchase discounted tickets for $2.50 though July 8.Admission after that date will be $5. Children 12-yearsand younger are free. Parking is $5.

The Headline Band July 12 is Material Girl, a Lady Gaga and Madonna Tribute Band. Thegroup performs at 8:45 p.m.

The Wyandotte County Back to School Fairreturns to the KCKCC Main Campus from 8 a.m.to noon Aug. 3!!

There are a variety of volunteer duties thatneed to be filled including registration,greeters and hall monitors, library book or bagdistribution, parking attendants and more!
