School and CommunityFounded in 1930, Bullis School is an independent co-educational college preparatory day school for students in grades 2-12. A total of 810 students are enrolled, including 518 in the Upper School, grades 9-12. In 2014, 119 students graduated.

Located in a suburb of Washington, D.C., Bullis admits students who will contribute in the classroom and throughout the community and who will embrace the school’s participatory approach. Students balance academics with arts and athletics, along with activities that encourage students to pursue their passions and discover new skills and interests.

MissionBullis provides a student-centered, balanced experience in academics, athletics, the arts and community service. Bullis uniquely prepares all students to become caring citizens and creative, critical thinkers who will thrive in tomorrow’s world.

Educational ApproachThe School’s approach is framed by our core academic values: communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and resourcefulness. From a challenging college preparatory education to a full array of performing groups, athletic teams and student service clubs, Bullis provides students with the chance to learn in the classroom and art studio, and on the playing field and stage.

While preparing students for college, the Upper School also requires students to participate in two school sports or extra-curricular activities each year, which further cultivates personal growth and helps students to develop or refine interests and passions. In addition, advisory groups and other events throughout the school year focus on character development to round out the skill set that Bullis graduates take with them when they leave the School.

Bullis students are encouraged to appropriately challenge themselves academically. A typical average courseload does not exceed four honors and/or AP courses each trimester. A small number of students may exceed this number under the guidance of the assistant principal for academics.

Signature ProgramsAs part of a robust college preparatory program, Bullis offers signature program opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), Entrepreneurship, Humanities and Global Studies, and Visual and Performing Arts. Ambitious students who enroll in these classes must still meet the School’s rigorous graduation requirements, and choose this path to pursue an additional programmatic course of interdisciplinary study in which they can develop expertise and engage in an in-depth and self-directed research practicum.

Combining classroom work with labs and internships, and under the guidance of skilled practitioners, students engage in an intense course of study that provides a unique applied learning opportunity to explore interests and develop real-world skills. This sets them on a path for a focused college experience and great success beyond. The program culminates in a project-based year-long Capstone in the student’s senior year.

Blended Online LearningThe Upper School courses listed below are taught through the Bullis web-based learning management platform called Haiku Learning Systems. Courses are fully developed with clearly defined goals, objectives, activities and student

outcomes to meet core academic standards. Each class meets in the traditional classroom setting two to three days per week. For the remaining two to three days per week, classes meet in a proctored virtual class session, typically in the Bullis library, for online work. While the workload for each course is designed for five days per week, online work settings provide flexibility for students to manage their time.

A Global PerspectiveA key part of Bullis’ balanced approach is including opportunities for students to gain broader perspectives on their world. Locally, students regularly engage in a range of community service projects, from single events to ongoing commitments with shelters and food banks and other organizations that provide a range of services in the community. Bullis requires no community service hours for graduation; our students participate in community service because they genuinely enjoy it.

On a broader level, Bullis’ Global Studies & Service program organizes six to eight trips each year for students to travel overseas for community service and educational enrichment. For the past two years, groups constructed buildings for a school in Cambodia, participated in the International Model U.N. Conference at The Hague, performed at the Roncalli Theater Festival in Italy and studied turtle habitats in St. Kitts.

Additional intensive cross-cultural experiences are being developed for both teachers and students: new programs include student exchanges with schools in Peru and Germany.

Accreditation and AffiliationsBullis is accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The School is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Secondary School Admission Test Board, the College Board, the Association of Independent Maryland Schools, the Black Student Fund and the National Association for College Admission Counseling. Bullis complies with the NACAC Statement of Principles of Good Practice.
