BONDI’S BEST  BETS

HARRY BONDI SPORTS 1-877-332-0077 www.HarryBondi.com2

WASHINGTON STATE over Boise State 10:30 P.M. ETWashington State has struggled

mightily during the Mike Leach Era inthe early stages of theseason. Over the last5 years, the Cougarshave gone just 2-5 inthe first two weeks of

the season, including unforgivablelosses to the likes of Eastern Washing-ton, Portland State and Rutgers. Be-cause of that, we have been told that

Leach put a huge emphasis on gettingoff to a better start this season and notsuffering similar early-season defeats,so we expect a fully focused effort herefrom Washington State, which is also ina revenge spot after falling behind 14-0 and eventually dropping a 31-28 de-cision on Boise State’s blue turf lastyear in Week 2. The Broncos return justfour starters on defense, so you can betthat Leach will have QB Luke Faulk

throwing deep into the fourth quarterand help him start to build his case fora Heisman Trophy with some hugenumbers. The Cougars are 10-6 ATSthe last four years as a home chalk andBoise rarely goes on the road out ofconference to play a team of this cal-iber on their home field. A primed andfocused Washington State comes outon all cylinders and has too much for aBoise State that is in decline. 45-20

WEST VA. over E. Carolina

We predict a down year for the Moun-taineers, but this is a game where headcoach Dana Holgorsen knows he has towin impressively in front of the homecrowd. Coming in off an opener vs. Vir-ginia Tech, the WVU offense will findthe going much easier here against adepleted ECU stop unit. WVU is 18-3 inthe series and 17-1 in home openers, including an average margin of victoryof 30 ppg the last 13 seasons. 34-6

N.M. State over N. Mexico

Former Notre Dame head coach BobDavie has done great things since tak-ing over the Lobo program, exceptagainst in-state rival New Mexico State. The Aggies have covered three straightin his heated annual game, including awild 32-31 victory last season. Withnine starters back on defense and theaddition of 7 JUCOS, the Aggies will bemore than ready for New Mexico’s run-heavy attack. Take the points. 31-27

WAKE FOREST over B.C.

BC head coach Steve Addazio is one ofHarry Bondi’s five “College Coacheson the Hot Seat” this season (seepage 4 of this issue), and after anotherloss to the Demon Deacons, the seatgets even hotter. Unlike BC, Wake hasimproved each season under head manDave Clawson, including a 4-1 ATSrecord as an away dog last year. Dea-cons have too much firepower for theoffensively challenged Eagles. 28-14

JACKSONVILLE (+5) over Houston 1 P.M. ESTThe Jaguars struggled to another

losing season in 2016, going just 3-13,but you’ve got to givethem credit for notstanding put. Not onlydid they hire a newhead coach in Doug

Marrone and go for a “sexy” first-rounddraft pick by selecting LSU running backLeonard Fournette with the No. 4 pick, but they also went out and spent $173

million in free agency, the most of anyother team in the league. While we ex-pect this offense to struggle until theyfinally unload Blake Bortles, the defensewill once again be very good in 2017.Believe it or not, the Jags had one ofthe best scoring defenses in the NFL inthe second half of last year. That has toconcern Houston head coach BillO’Brien, whose starting quarterbackTom Savage won the job by default

over rookie Deshaun Watson. In addi-tion to a journeyman QB, the Texansrunning game was also a disaster lastyear, ranking as the fifth-worst in theleague by our advanced metrics. Sowe’ll gladly take the points in Week 1with an underrated Jacksonville defensegoing head-to-head with a Texans of-fense that will struggle again in 2017,especially during the early stages of theseason with Tom Savage at QB. 23-17

MIAMI (-1) over Tampa Bay

No, we’re not one of the very few people in the Jay CutlerFan Club. But the fact is that this was a decent signing for theDolphins and the former Bears sourball isn’t that much of adrop off from Ryan Tannehill. Meanwhile, we think Tampa isone of the more overrated teams in the NFL. Many havethem as a “sleeper” to win their division, so much so that theprice here has dropped to a near pick’em. Fins win. 28-17

UNDER 47 POINTS - Browns at Steelers

The average over/under for Pittsburgh regular season gamesover the last two years has been 47 and, as a result, theSteelers have gone under in 20 of the 32 games (63%)played during that time span. It appears the oddsmaker hasnot caught on, so we’ll just keep cashing tickets on the under, especially when the Pitt “D” gets to face a team and a QB asinept as the Browns and rookie QB DeShone Kizer. 1. Brian Kelly - Notre DameNo one is on a hotter seat thanKelly (right). The Irish are comingoff one of their worst seasons inhistory and have one of the na-tion’s toughest schedules in 2017.Kelly says last year’s 4-8 recordwas because he spent too muchtime fundraising. No excuses thisyear! If he doesn’t get eight winsin ‘17, Kelly will be the latest in along tradition of Irish coaches get-ting paid not to coach!

2. Todd Graham - Arizona StateAfter leading the Sun Devils to apair of 10-win seasons, ASU hashad two losing seasons in a row.School administrators refused toadd a year to his contract this off-season. Another losing seasonand Todd is toast!

3. Lovie Smith - IllinoisIt’s only Smith’s second year atIllinois, but this was a bad hire.Lovie’s a nice guy, but flamed outin the NFL and had not coachedcollege football in 21 years.

4. Sean Kugler - UTEPExpectations are not high at UTEPbut how can you survive any-where when your four-year overallrecord is 18-31 and you go a piti-ful 11-21 in the weak ConferenceUSA? If it’s not a winning year forthe Miners, this master bullshitartist will be asked to ride out ofthe west Texas town of El Paso!

5. Steve Addazio - Boston CollegeAddazio is a real hardass and hasnot made many friends in fouryears at BC. They were ready torun him out of town after a 3-9season in 2015, but he bouncedback with a 7-6 2016. This year’ssquad will struggle on offense andwhen your defense is continuallycalled on to win games it meanstrouble. A non-winning seasonand “Coach A-Hole” gets canned.

Georgia Tech booted its top of-fensive player, Dedrick Mills, afterhis third violation of team rules andjust weeks before its season openeragainst Tennessee. Mills led the Yel-low Jackets in rushing . . . Army willbegin the season without leadingreturning receiver Jeff Ejekam, who has been indefinitely sus-pended for honor code violations. Atmost schools that means a one-game suspension, but at West Pointit could be the season. The BlackKnights will also be without talenteddefensive end Amedeo West, whois lost for ther season with a tornACL . . . Colorado’s defensive sec-ondary took a big hit when starterAnthony Julmisse was thrown offthe team for throwing his girlfrienddown a flight of stairs. Also, JaisonSanchez, who missed last seasonwith a torn ACL, is gone for the sea-

son with a shoulder separation. DeShone Kizer has once again

fooled a head coach into thinking hewill be the answer at QB. Kizer is asuper talented kid that makes ahabit of turning the ball over in thered zone. It almost got Brian Kellyfired last year at Notre Dame and it

will drive Hue Jackson crazy inCleveland. But Jackson has no otheroption since the front office tried toshove Brock Osweiler down histhroat as the starter, but the DenverBronco-Houston Texan reject could-n’t win the job and may not even bethe back-up because he’s been sobad. Kizer becomes Cleveland’s 27thstarting QB since 2009. By compar-ison, New England has had five.

We will have many easy win-ners in the next two weeks be-cause of our intimate knowledge ofteam’s depth charts. Don’t pro-crastinate and sit on the sidelinesonly to realize you missed out on aboat load of easy money whileyou tried to pick the games on yourown.
