Dear Parents,

Last night’s End of Year Mass was an inspiring culminat ion of the 2018 school year. Congratulations to all our students for leading us so well.

The End of Year Mass ritual speaks for itself as a Eucharistic encounter between Christ and our community enriched by the words of the Scripture beautifully conveyed, and by the prayers of the Church and of the Faithful. The music from Choir from the soloists, and the backing of the musicians takes us into the world beyond words, one which speaks to the heart. Thank you Courtney Day for your unassuming professionalism in bringing it all together.

As you all know this Special liturgy is the creative and holy work of many staff and students. Thank you to all. I was proud of all our students who each played their part in lifting our hearts to the One who has given us the gifts to do so.

Our special thanks to Rev. Fr. James Valledares who presided at our Mass. Special thanks also to our Liturgy Coordinator Genevieve Taheny, who did so much to bring all the elements of this liturgy together.

Our graduates were especially in our hearts as they were given a special part in this Mass. Their final goodbye will be at the Graduation Ball on next Tuesday night. To Greg Larwood Year 12 Coordinator and the Year 12 team who are so much an active part of end of Year Mass, Assembly and Grad Ball, thank you.

This Final WeekThe Years 7-12 Assembly will be held on this Friday when student awards will be presented and students will farewell some of our staff. These staff members were named and thanked at last night’s Mass. On this Friday December 7th, classes for R-9 will be dismissed at the earlier time of 2:30pm. St Dominic’s Priory College

Last night was a special time of reflection and celebration as we came together as a school community to celebrate our

End of Year Mass and farewell of our Year 12 students.

A reminder that we are having our Volunteer’s Afternoon Tea in the Art Room, today (Wednesday) from 3:00pm till 3:40pm. We are always very grateful for the extra support provided by our parents who help in the classrooms, and with excursions, and invite you to please join us for a cuppa, if you are free.

Last Wednesday we had the Year 6 Graduation. It was a wonderful event and we thank parents for their positive feedback. The evening was celebrated with family at a BBQ, followed by prayer and a presentation where students reflected on their Primary years. Belinda Baker, Michelle Richter and Anna Sordillo created a memorable evening with song and an award ceremony that made meaningful connections to the Learner Profiles of the MYP. Our Year 6 class have been an enthusiastic and friendly group. They are always eager to help and the teachers sincerely wish them well as they begin the next stage of their education in Year 7.

Our Vinnies Christmas Appeal has been embraced by the students and parents, with the Giving Tree in the Primary Foyer bursting at the seams with donations for those who are not as fortunate as us. The last day to make a donation here at school will be Friday. Thank you to Mr Shane Copeland who will organise the distribution of the gifts to Vinnies.

Staffing 2019:

YEAR 3: Mrs Tania Piotto will be working Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and Ms Josie McKinnon, who has taught the girls on many occasions and is a highly competent and professional teacher, will teach the class on Thursday and Friday. She is very much looking forward to it. Ms Elena Tarraran will continue to teach Italian from Reception to Year 5.

YEAR 4: We welcome Mrs Rachel Bolt who will be teaching with Mrs Georgina Fenton in the Year 4 class. She comes with a wealth of knowledge, is a highly respected and dedicated teacher and has a passion for providing rich and challenging learning opportunities for her students. Mrs Kirsten Maycock will remain as our Primary Key Literacy Teacher and work closely with teachers to develop effective and current Literacy programs. She will also teach English to some Year 7 and 8 classes.

Buddy Class: Last week we helped our buddy create a decoration for the Christmas tree. Through tracing, cutting, pasting and drawing we put together a spinning snowman. The class are very enthusiastic about working with the Receptions and have developed lovely friendships over the year.

In and around the classrooms:

Design and Technology: This term, the girls were asked to create a hallway light fitting. After a few sketches they went about producing a product. The aim of the task was to introduce different joining techniques.

I learnt that there are a lot of different ways parts of a product can join together. If completing this light fitting again, I would add more detail, make it a different shape and use different joining strategies. My favourite part of is showing my creativity. - Lysha I am fairly happy with my light fitting, but if I had time I would create a base for the light. I love making and working with different materials. - Isabella PI l e a r nt d i f fe re nt j o i n i n g techniques such as weaving. Next time, I would try not to use the hot glue gun as much. I am eager to learn more. - AlissaI learnt that the product that someone produces first is not necessarily the best one. I like our design and wouldn’t change it i f given the opportunity. I am building an interest in STEM work, as I do enjoy creating things. - Harper

YEAR 4

Primary News from Ms. Cate O’Leary, Primary School Coordinator

Our Curriculum Coordinator, Ms Deb Osborne, and Key Literacy Teacher, Mrs Kirsten Maycock, have been instrumental in challenging our teaching practices and guiding us to produce effective and current pedagogy in our classes. We thank them for their leadership and enthusiasm. A very big thank you must also go to the dedicated band of Primary School teachers and ancillary staff who work very hard to address the social, emotional and academic needs for the children.

Finally, we thank all our parents. The dedication you give to your daughter’s education and the support that you give to the school is always greatly appreciated.

The Primary staff wish you all a very happy, healthy and safe Christmas.

God Bless See you in 2019

Student Laptop Collection 2019All students in Years 6 - 12 are issued with a Laptop as part of the College-Owned Laptop Program. In 2019, distribution of these devices will take place as follows:

YEARS 9, 10, 11 + 12 - Friday 25 January: students in Year 9 to 12 (inclusive) are to collect their Laptop from the Library between the hours of 8:30am - 4:00pm. This date is in the last week of the school holidays - please mark it in your calendar now. YEAR 7 + 8 - Tuesday 29 January: students in Years 7 and 8 will be issued with their laptop as part of the Orientation Day program. YEAR 6 - Wednesday 30 January: students in Years 6 will be issued with their laptop, and case, via their Home Group Teacher.

Laptop Collection on your daughters’ dedicated pick up day means that there will be time at home to set up and charge the laptop, and be ready for a smooth start to school in Week 1. This will minimise disruption during class time at the start of term. If your daughter has previously been issued with a laptop case (all students presently in Years 6-11) it is essential that she bring it to school when collecting her computer. All current Year 6-12 families will have already signed the College-Owned Laptop Agreement Program Student and Parent/Guardian Agreement. If your daughter is new to Years 6-12, and receiving a laptop for the first time, please ensure you have returned your signed agreement. A copy of the agreement can be accessed online at: https://stdo.ms/2rl2iOpBest wishes for a wonderful Christmas and see you in the New Year!

Year 6 Graduation BBQLast Wednesday night the Year 6 class of 2018 had their Graduation. It was a fantastic night with over 100 people supporting the girls as they reminisced about their years in the primary school. There were balloons, a graduation cake and speeches. Thanks you to everyone who helped make the night a success.

It was one of the most memorable events of Year 6 – Ella Coombe

Our parents took over one million photos and our mouths hurt from smiling but we all loved graduation. – Olivia Jensen

The best part was the cake and the graduation part (the gift was a book mark , pen and a note book). My speech was about the zoo snooze that was the best night of my life.

– Isabella Sinton

The Parents and Friends have had another successful and busy year in 2018 and have continued to contribute

to the St. Dominic’s community. We have been privileged through our own schooling at St. Dominic’s to have watched our mothers (and mother-in-law) be involved in the Parents and Friends and feel honoured to have been able to follow what is now a tradition. We acknowledge the continued support that Sister Jill and Muriel Noujaim has provided to us as they have guided us through another year. Thanks to Cate O’Leary who has kept us up to date with all of the Primary news at our meetings.

This year has been a year where the school has faced some challenging times. We would like to congratulate Sr Jill and the school leadership for their respectful management and guidance.

We thank and acknowledge all of the parents and friends and school staff who have assisted including the many businesses that also support us with raffle prizes and donations of goods throughout the year. We recognise the large number of year 12 parents who have contributed over their daughters’ schooling.

Thanks goes to our support team of our Vice President Maria Lappas and Secretary Kate Jensen, we will both miss working with you.

Year in ReviewEvery year we hold three major community events

and a Chocolate Drive.

Family Mass Family Mass welcomed new families and enjoyed the company of returning parents. We were encouraged by the number of new parents who volunteered to assist us on the day.

Sports DaySports Day moved back to the redeveloped Sacred Heart grounds this year, we were very lucky to be able to use the new facilities. The weather although predicted to be extremely hot, was perfect and allowed the girls and families to enjoy the sporting activities. We managed to sell out at many of the food at the stalls. We appreciate and thank all the convenors, their helpers and teaching staff who ensured the day ran smoothly and successfully.

Chocolate DriveThe Chocolate Drive proved successful again, and thanks goes to our coordinator - Philippa Sharpe.

Quiz NightThe 80s was the theme of the Quiz Night – a fun night with great atmosphere, dancing, singing and dress ups. Thank you to the staff, students, parents and friends that attended and our MCs and audio-visual attendants. We would especially like to thank Leah Raschella, Angela Vagionas, Sophie Mihelios, Kate Haskey and Superna Barone who coordinated the night and sourced and wrapped all of the wonderful prizes.

Fete & AuctionLast but not least the Fete provided yet another successful community day with great support from many volunteers. From the volunteers who set up and clean up, those that coordinate, convene the stalls, make goods all throughout the year and assist at the stalls throughout the day – we thank you.

Thank YousWe would especially like to thank Kathryn Hudson (winner of the best dressed at the 80s Quiz Night!) who continues to tirelessly support us at all the school events. Behind the scenes are Loretta and Danielle and others who also assist us with the administration of the Parents and Friends and keep us on track with notices! Our parent volunteers enable us to offer the events that we coordinate and raise the funds for our school. Working together not only makes things easier but it has been great over the years to watch the different friendships develop while raising money for our girls at St. Dominic’s and teaching our daughters that giving back to the community is a wonderful and important value.

We would like to announce that the total P & F profit for 2018 is:

$92,399 (NB: This is before 2018 Graduation Ball costs)

– another great success which will assist the school in new infrastructure around the school.

We thank the many businesses and individuals that also support us through our raffle prizes and

donations of goods throughout the year

SPORTS NEWSYear 10 SurfingOver the course of three days last week, all Year 10 students, as part of the Health and PE program, had the opportunity to spend a day (or two) learning to surf. Chasing the perfect surf conditions, we made our way to Goolwa beach, where wet-suits were donned and many waves caught. Teachers and instructors were pleased by the effort and enthusiasm in which all girls attacked the day and were impressed with the skills that were shown.
