The Cracked Plug Run – Tasmania in March 2019 Rally Report by Julian McNeil Photos by Julian & Jane McNeil Jill Hawkins and Kelvin Callaghan had already run a rally across their state from the North western

most point reachable by motor vehicle to the south eastern most point crossing the magnificent highlands in 2016. It was such a success that going the other way became a must for all the original entrants including Shaun Crofton and Andrew Howe-Davies who came from the other side of the world to repeat the experience of crossing Tasmania. This run is by necessity a progressive rally and therefore harder to organize and we are indebted to the formidable organizational skills of Jill Hawkins as well as the unfailing hospitality of the Tasmanians as a whole. My trusty 1909 Cadillac that tackled the hills

This time the North-eastern most point is Cape Portland where there is a wind farm owned, as one would expect, by the Chinese. The coastline in the area is spectacular and the wind formidable. To go there we had to stay at what the Americans would call a ‘Dude ranch’ called Icena, a fun experience on its own. We then proceeded to Bridport, a very pretty fishing port along the coast, then to Launceston and next day up the climb to the Highlands and the great lake. The formidable climb was relieved by a lunch at the Hawkins “shack” (i.e. holiday resort). We passed a number of areas that had recently been burn by the bushfires that had ravaged Tasmania including the Great Lake Hotel where we stayed the night – not surprisingly it was for sale.

The major challenge was the trip to Strathgordon which was the South western most point. We found out why I was forbidden to use the 1906 Swift that I had used on the previous run as were

several others with varying degrees of compliance. The unrelenting steep hill climbs tested all of the entrants, but the country was magnificent and all of us were taken aback by the beauty of the area around Lake Gordon and Lake Pedder. The accompanying photos don’t seem to do justice to the magnificence of the scenery. Many thanks to Jill Hawkins for all the hard word she and her band had put into the organization of this unforgettable experience and to Kelvin for pushing the concept.

VCCSA Annual Rally 2019 – Rally Update Update by VCCSA Annual Rally Team Only a short time now until everyone gathers in Normanville for the 2019 VCC of SA Annual Rally. We have around 30 entrants, including 3 single cylinder Cadillacs, and more than 50 people wending their way down to the Fleurieu Peninsula from Saturday, 13 April 2019. While many of the early starters will be down there ahead of schedule to ensure their place in the Festival Fleurieu launch (see separate details below) at the Yankalilla Showgrounds on the Saturday, we expect some entrants will arrive while most of us are at the launch. For everyone’s benefit please find attached a small map of the Lady Bay Links Resort building. You will note a black dot off the end of Turnberry Drive. This is the area we have been allowed to use to park our trailers for the duration of the rally so if you arrive when there is no-one there to “tell you where to go” you now know! When parking your trailer please have consideration for other users and the neighbours and ensure the road is kept clear and room is left for all trailers. Registration for entrants will be held in the main reception area of the Resort itself from 5:30 to 6:30pm followed by the welcome BBQ starting at 7pm. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone there and wish you all a happy and safe trip to Normanville. Any further details: John Hancock at [email protected] or Mb: 0499 600 489 See you all soon!

Instruction sheet – Saturday, 13 April 2019

Festival Fleurieu Opening The opening event of the Biennial Festival Fleurieu is being staged at the Yankallila Showgrounds on the main road between Yankalilla and Normanville (about 4k from Links Lady Bay Resort (Rally HQ). The event features displays and market stalls featuring the products of many of the artisans involved in the Festival, live music on two stages, gourmet food stalls and even a light display in the early evening. VCCSA Annual Rally entrants have been invited to be part of the launch by placing their vehicles on display between 2 and 5pm on the day. All entrants wishing to take part are asked to meet at the main reception car park at the Links Lady Bay Resort at 1:15pm. All vehicles will then travel to the opening event together to arrive, and be parked in the display area, before the event opens to the public at 2pm. Arrangements have been made for all vehicles to leave the showgrounds at 5pm, approximately one hour before sunset, to ensure all vehicles are safely back at their owner’s accommodation well before last light.
