2016 Men U21 NORCECA Continental Championship

Barbados beats Saint Vincent for fifth place at U21 men's championship GATINEAU, Canada, July 9, 2016 – Barbados secured fifth place in the U21 NORCECA Men's Continental Championship by defeating the spirited Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 3-1 (25-17, 26-24, 23-25, 25-18). Carlos Cyrus contributed 14 points (11 kills from 29 attacks, plus three aces) toward helping Barbados finish their experience at Centre Sportif de Gatineau positively. Ashan Jordan added 12 points (including 11 kills from 25 attacks) after drawing in to replace captain Andriy Stapleton, who suffered a significant left knee injury on Friday. Ronaldo Franklyn was the match's top shot with 17 points (16-of-44 on attacks) for Saint Vincent while his cousin, Asmond Franklyn, tallied 12 (11-of-23 on attacks). After the teams traded two-point wins in the second and third, Barbados corrected their form by scoring 15 of the last 23 points in the fourth. Barbados converted 38-of-105 attacks and Saint Vincent converted 37-of-104, but the victors had a 10-2 edge on aces and allowed 14 fewer points on errors (35 to 49). “I'm glad we finished the tournament with a win and finished on a high,” Barbados match captain Adam Niles said. “I think the guys played well this game despite the rough start to the tournament.” Barbados arrived in Canada's national capital region with designs on a semi-final berth. Stapleton, who was on crutches on Saturday, went down during the opening set of their 3-1 quarter-final loss against Guatemala. “Any time you get a chance to play a tournament at this level, you can only get better,” Barbados coach John Stuart said “It's a great experience. We have three players [Brandon Callender, Kadeem Morris and Jherard Morris-Sealy] born in 1999 who will be young enough to play again in the championship of the Caribbean.” Saint Vincent won a set for the first time in three matches. In the second set, they were down 16-10 at the second technical timeout and rallied back. There were were eight consecutive ties from 17-17 through 24-24 before Barbados converted on their second set point. “My team gave it their all, but we needed a little more,” Ronaldo Franklyn said. “The way that we played was exceptional. I think today gave us reason to understand how tough we have to push to gain a point in the close matches.” Saint Vincent was aggressive at the net, coming away with a 10-2 edge in points via blocks. Five came from Marcus Thomas. “As you can see, they are starting to get confidence in this competition,” Saint Vincent coach Vance Andrews said. “It's taken a while to get to that level. The team is young and this will be a good experience. Ronaldo [Franklyn] played outstanding today.”

Saint Vincent and Trinidad and Tobago will play in the sixth-place classification game at 4 p.m. Sunday, prior to the bronze-medal and gold-medal games.

Cuba sweeps Guatemala to reach final of U21 men's championship GATINEAU, Canada, July 9, 2016 – Cuba advanced to the final of the U21 NORCECA Men's Continental Championship by beating Guatemala 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-17) in the semi-final on Saturday. Cuba showed its hitting and serving power, with Miguel David Gutierrez drilling six aces among his 16 points. Jose Romero Gonzalez contributed 14 (including 11 kills on 19 attacks) and Miguel Lopez had 13 (10 kills on 16 attacks). Guatemala, the Central America representative in the last four at Centre Sportif de Gatineau, received 18 points from captain Erik Flores (including 17 kills on 25 attacks). The tournament winner qualifies for the 2017 FIVB U21 world championship. “We are excited to get ready to play in the final,” Cuba setter Luis Taboada said. “We will gather our whole team in one room to speak about it. We have to play our best.” There was little doubt Cuba would win, but coach Jesus Angel Cruz sent a message by using a timeout with a 16-15 lead in the third set, after Flores secured the first point following a technical timeout. “We're ready, whichever team [Canada or Team USA] that we play,” Cruz added. “The gold medal is the target. It is the only way to have the classification for the world championship. We have to win.” On top of a discrepancy in experience, Cuba averages 194 cm in height, compared to Guatemala's 181. Scoring in the mid-teens in every set was a moral victory. “Here, we learn to play against tall teams – players who are much bigger than we are and more experienced than us,” Flores said. “These kind of games give us more experience for the next tournament we have in Central America in two weeks (U-23 Central American Championship in Panama). It’s useful for us because in Central America there are not as many teams with this much experience playing at this level.” Amid that challenging atmosphere, Guatemala's back-row players each had strong nights. Adan Ruano had a 73.5 per cent night setting, going 36-of-49 (73.5 per cent) on sets. Libero Luis Santa Cruz had a match-high seven digs. “We knew we were going to play against a big team, with a high level, and we are just trying to improve,” Guatemala coach Reider Lucas said. “We were just approaching the opportunities the other team gave us and did our best with what we have to offer during the match.” The bronze-medal game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, with Cuba facing the Canada-USA winner in the championship gold-medal game at 8 p.m. Matches live streamed at www.volleyballsource.net

Team USA beats Canada, will meet Cuba for U21 men's gold GATINEAU, Canada, July 9, 2016 – Jack Tuaniga and Team USA had a 15-point run in the opening set that set a tone for their straight-set 3-0 (25-9, 26-24, 25-21) semi-final win against Canada in the U21 NORCECA Men's Continental Championship. The win creates a Cuba-USA gold-medal game for a spot in the 2017 FIVB U21 world championship. Outside hitter Dylan Missry was USA's top shot with 11 points (11 kills from 24 attacks). Team USA also got 10 each from Kyle Ensing tallied 10 (eight kills, one block and one ace) from Jordan Ewert (including nine kills on 16 attacks). Canada received 11 points from Sharone Vernon-Evans (all kills, from 31 attacks) and 10 from Eric Loeppky (eight kills from 19 attacks and two blocks). In the first, Tuaniga, the left-handed setter, had his spinning salvos locked in while serving 14 consecutive points and keeping USA's attack running crisply. “I think that was the first time I have ever done that – that was crazy,” said Tuaniga, a NCAA second-team All-American setter at Long Beach State University. “I've done maybe 10, at most. Fourteen was a rough one. “[After the first set] we just had to keep reminding ourselves that the team on the other side is a good team and keep working. We did good job of that. Canada gave us a really good fight, so kudos to them.” Canada showed some pushback in the final two sets. In the second, they had serve with a 24-24 tie before USA claimed the next two points. The unexpected start did take a toll on the host team. “Looking back at that score [25-9], it definitely put a hit on us as a team,” Canada setter C.J. Gavlas said. “We tried to bounce back. We had a real good second set as a team and couldn't put it away. It definitely did something to our psyche, but I don't know if it should have. “There's some disappointment, maybe a bit of frustration,” Gavlas said. “We have to bounce back pretty quickly for tomorrow night's [bronze-medal] game [against Guatemala].” Neither Cuba nor USA has lost a set this week. The Americans, on a per-player basis, have a slight edge over Cuba in age (19.0 to Cuba's 18.2) and taller (196 cm to 194). And, of course, only one team is assured a place at the worlds. “I think Cuba is going to be a big, powerful team,” USA coach Jay Hosack said. “They're not a finesse team, they just like to go up and bang away. They serve very well. We're going to have to do a little better job of passing the ball if we want to have a chance. Those are the two things we'll work on before [Sunday].”

Canada is a young team, with a 50/50 split of 1998-birth players fresh from high school and 19-year-old university student-athletes. Saturday's result was their second 3-0 loss of the week against a top opponent. “I will say we are still in a learning process,” Canada’s head coach Gino Brousseau said. “That is what I told the guys: if they want to play at a higher level, they have to learn to deal with the pressure. We saw tonight a situation where the guys had trouble. The kids are very disappointed. The staff is disappointed. But they have to go through this situation. “What I'm happy about is that we got beaten very badly in the first set and we came back strong,” Brousseau elaborated. “That means we have some character.” The Canada-Guatemala bronze-medal game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday, followed by the 8 p.m. Cuba-USA final.
