“One thing I do know: I was blind but now I see!” John 9:25 For other Wellspring sermons and worksheets, go to SHARINGtheHEART.org/Wellspring Hank Williams left an incredible music legacy but lived a tragic life. He died on New Year’s Eve 1952 at the age of 29 from a heart attack brought on by a life long addiction to alcohol and prescription pain killers. His big hits (Hey Good Lookin’, Jambalaya, I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, etc.) brought people to his concerts, but Hank ended every concert with his gospel song, “I Saw the Light”. Do a web search and listen to two versions of this song: Hank Williams original and David Crowder’s version. I Saw the Light: Hank Williams wrote this song while on his way home from a several day tour. The car Hank and his band were traveling in kept breaking down. On their way back to Montgomery, Alabama, the car was about to quit again and they began to wonder if the car was going to get them home. All at once, Hank spotted the beacon light at the Montgomery airport and he hollered, "We're okay now boys we're gonna make it I saw the light." After he got home he kept repeating those words over and over. He sat down and began writing the song, finishing it the next day. Healing a Blind Man: Read John 9:141. Jesus heals a man born blind. The interaction between the unbelieving Pharisees and the formerly blind man is humorous. Read verses 912 again. When the man left Jesus to go to Siloam to wash he was still blind! Of course he would not know where Jesus went! Read verses 2634. The Pharisees ask the man again what happened. The miracle gave him the boldness of a clear response. He even asks if the Pharisees want to believe in Jesus, too! How bold is your response when you are asked about your faith? The Pharisees wanted to silence the man because they had the power and he was not as good as them. Is our faith silenced because we are afraid of power or of our shortcomings? Does the blind man lecture us, too? Be bold in your faith! Tell your story. After his healing and examination by the Pharisees, the man sees Jesus! Read verse 35. Who finds who? The man answers Jesus’ question, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” with … “Who is he? Tell me so that I may believe in him.” Who in your life is asking the question, “Who is Jesus?” How are you telling them about Jesus in words and deeds? Waling in the Light: Read 1 John 1:57. God is light! What is the difference between walking in darkness and walking in the light? Who are we connected with if we walk in the light? (Note the answer has two important parts, what are they?) Darkness means we are trapped in sin. What happens to our sins through Jesus? You may not have a story to tell about being physically blind and now being able to see, but what story do you have about moving from darkness (sin) into light (fellowship) through faith in Jesus? Like the blind man, can you begin your story with, “One thing I do know. I was ____ but now I ____”? Read 1 Peter 2:9. In Jesus, this is (or can be) you! What does this passage say about you? Have You Seen the Light? Just like a blind man I wandered along Worries and fears I claimed for my own Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight Praise the Lord I saw the light!
