FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! And Happy New Year!
“May this new year be a time of blessing for
you and for everyone in our parish family. “
Wait a minute, there! What did I just write?Didn’t that last sentence come just a little too
easily? And, let’s face it, doesn’t it sound to
you just a little glib? What in the world do we
mean by “blessing” anyhow?
Since September, Fathers Adrian, Luis and I
have been going around to visit each of the
classrooms in both our parish school—Old
Mission Montessori-- and in our Religious Edu-
cation program. An ambitious project! Ithought I’d be able to visit all of the nearly
1,000 children and young people in, well—a
month or so. Right. Here it is the first of the
year and I’ve still got several classes to go.
Hang on, kids, I’m on my way!
A big part of my visit involves the ritual of
blessing. I tell the kids about the custom of
many Native American peoples to ask the
Spirit’s blessing on all of creation by way of blessing each of the four directions of the
world. And I remind them that the very
ground we stand on was the land of the
Luiseno people, many of whose descendants
still live right here in Oceanside. Then I ask the
students, “Where is north?” And after some
discussion, we generally agree on a specific
direction, then mention in prayer all the peo-
ples who live in that neck of the woods (e.g.
Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Canada, the North Pole) and ask God to bless them.
Usually our blessing includes sprinkling some
holy water on the wall or the windows to em-
phasize the point. Most times, it takes less
than five minutes to bless the entire world, its
peoples, and its contents. Not bad for a morn-
ing’s work.
8/3/2019 Bulletin for January 1, 2012
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/bulletin-for-january-1-2012 3/12
But what do we really do when we ‘bless’ or,
invoke God’s blessing on someone or some-
thing? I don’t have a quick theological re-
sponse, but I try to tell our students this: Just
imagine if you could take something of the ab-
solute very best within your heart and soul and
ask God to give just a little bit of that as a giftto someone else to help them in their lives.
In a sense, that is what is happening in today’s
Gospel in which Luke (2:15-21) tells us that fol-
lowing the departure of the shepherds who
had come to witness and acclaim the birth of
Jesus, Mary “kept all these things, pondering
them in her heart.” In other words, after all
the guests— unexpected and uninvited alike—
have gone home, Mary takes time to“ponder”—to reflect upon the meaning of all
that has happened in her life in and through
the birth of Jesus. In another way, it might be
said that she took time to ‘count her bless-
ings’—to meditate on the ways in which God—
both directly and through others—had touched
her life with His Love and His Power.
It wouldn’t be such a bad idea if we could do
the same at the beginning of this New Year.Take some time, like Mary, to count our bless-
ings, to ponder on the ways God has touched
and changed our lives through the people who
have shown us God’s Presence and Love. And
offer a blessing for them as well.
May this New Year, then, be a time of blessing
for you and for everyone in our parish family!
God bless,
Fr. Chuck

8 | PARROQUIA MISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California — 1 de enero del 2012
Querida Familia Parroquial,
no!
Generalmente nuestra bendición incluye regando agua bendi-
