CALLED BY NAME—A FUTURE FULL OF HOPE The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has encouraged all parishes to participate in Called by Name; a program of vocation awareness. This program offers us an opportunity to pray for vocations; to recognize gifts and potential for leader-ship and service in members of our parish; and finally, to call forth and encourage these members to share their gifts in priesthood. Perhaps you know a single man (16 years or older) who would, in your opinion, have qualities to be-come a priest. Please recommend this person by cutting out the “response card” on this page, filling it out, and placing it in the collection basket or returning it to the rectory any time by November 15.

A Little Bit of Wisdom “To be saints

is not a privilege for the few, but a vocation for everyone.” Pope Francis

**********************

ALL SAINTS, ALL SOULS, & HALLOWEEN All Saints Day, on which Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown, is a surprisingly old feast. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom of saints on the anniversary of their mar-tyrdom. When the martyrdoms increased during the per-secutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses insti-tuted a common feast day in order to ensure that all mar-tyrs, known and unknown, were properly honored. By the late fourth century, this common feast was celebrated in Antioch, and St. Ephren the Syrian men-tioned it in a sermon in the year 373. In the early centu-ries, this feast was celebrated in the Easter Season and the Eastern Churches, both Catholic and Orthodox, still celebrate it then. All Saints Day is celebrated on November 1st and is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed, known as All Souls’ Day, is celebrated on the following day, November 2nd. This memorial of all the faithful departed is rooted in ancient Christian tradition dating back to the 2nd Century. It was introduced by St. Odilo, abbot of Cluny, who prescribed that all the monks of his Benedictine congregation should offer the holy Sacrifice and say prayers for the suffering souls in Purgatory every year on November 2. The popes in Rome gladly accepted this wonderful and charitable thought and ex-tended the celebration to the whole Church. The vigil or eve of the feast of All Saints, October 31, is commonly known as All Hallows Eve, or Halloween. Despite concerns among some Christians, (including some Catholics) in recent years about the “pagan origins” of Halloween , the vigil was and is cele-brated as a preparation for the great feast of All Saints.

Domingo Escritura Reflexions

Primera lectura Apocalipsis 7:2-4; 9-14

Sunday Scripture Reflections

Reading 1 Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14

In this reading from the Book of Revelation, the author, who calls himself John, writes after the year A.D. 70. It was a time of terrible persecution of Christians. In his writing, he urged them to persevere in their faith. In a vi-sion the author sees "a huge crowd which no one could count" from every nation on earth. They stand in triumph before the throne of God and the Lamb (Christ), dressed in white and holding palm branches, the sign of victory. John is told who they are: those who survived the great trial and washed their robes in the blood of the Lamb. This is sym-bolic language. It means that these people, in their own lives, have participated in the suffering and death of Christ. This washing makes their robes white, like the robes of those who have been baptized into Christ. We, too, are washed clean when we share in the death of Christ through the waters of Baptism. We may not be asked to die for our faith like so many of the early Christians. But we are called to be strong in our faith even when we are ridi-culed by others.

Reading 2 John 3:1-3

In this reading we are reminded of the consoling hope we have as children of God. The world may not agree, John says, yet that is in fact who we are. One day we will see God face to face. As children of God, we should live sinless lives. All children try to bring credit to their parents and their brothers and sisters. How much more should this be our aim as God's children.

Gospel Matthew 5: 1-12a

This reading from the Gospel of Matthew contains the Beatitudes. These statements are a summary of the way to sainthood for all the thousands and thousands of people who have followed Jesus faithfully. They show how the followers of Jesus today are to live for God's kingdom. All the rewards promised here will have their fulfillment in God's kingdom in heaven. Jesus calls us all to holiness. By following the teachings of Jesus and the Church, celebrating the sacra-ments, and trusting in the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the way to heaven lies open for us. Our journey of faith may not be an easy one. There will be many hardships and chal-lenges along the way. But if we walk humbly with our God, we will one day reach the place of justice and peace where God reigns forever.
