When offered the choice between true knowledge or riches, Solomon prays for wisdom of heart. When given the choice between following Jesus or remaining attached to his material wealth,

the man chooses his possessions. Gods word challenges us to be attached to Jesus, and to him alone..

    Domingo Escritura Reflexions

    Sunday Scripture Reflections

    Reading 1 Wisdom 7:7-11

If one person prays to win the lottery and another person prays for wisdom, which do you think has offered the most meaningful prayer? The author of this reading sees clearly that wisdom is more desirable than riches. It is also to be valued above power, health, and beauty. Wisdom enables us to keep our priorities straight. It helps us to see things from God's point of view. Sometimes we hesitate to seek the things of God because it might mean we have to lose the things of earth. But when we seek God and God's kingdom first, everything else of true value will follow.

    Reading 2 Hebrews 4:12-13

A two-edged sword is a very powerful symbol. When we picture God's word as a sharp sword, we want to sit up and pay attention to the reading. The inspired author teaches us that this sword can cut right to the human heart. It judges our thoughts and decisions. It saves those who listen to it and requires an accounting from those who ignore it. The symbol of the sword reminds us that God's word is alive and active. It is never a word that is lifeless or without meaning in our daily lives. It is always capable of changing us if we let it.

    Gospel Mark 10:17-27

The rich young man in this story is like a mountain climber who has almost reached the summit. But the final stretch will be more difficult than the distance he has already come. He comes to seek wisdom from Jesus about how to achieve everlasting life. He assures the Good Teach-er that he has kept the commandments since he was a child. Jesus looks at him with love and challenges him to do one thing more. If he wants to reach the summit of treasure in heaven, the young man must sell his possessions and follow Jesus. This he cannot do. So he goes away sad. Jesus assures his disciples that entering the king-dom of God is no easy matter. Those who are attached to their possessions will have a more difficult time. However, those who rely on God to achieve the impossible can do all good things.

October 11, 2015 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY On March 13, 2015, Pope Francis announced an extraordinary jubilee, a Holy Year of Mercy, to highlight the Catholic Churchs mission to be a witness of mercy. Traditionally, every 25 years the popes proclaim a holy year, which features special celebrations and pilgrim-ages, strong calls for conversion and repentance, and the offer of special opportunities to experience Gods grace through the sacraments, especially Confession. Extraordi-nary holy years, like the Holy Year of Mercy, are less fre-quent but offer the same opportunities for spiritual growth. The special year will take place Dec. 8, 2015 until Nov. 20, 2016. The biblical theme of the year will be Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

There will undoubtedly be more information about this Holy Year in days to come. As an early preparation for this Holy Year let us look at -

    FORGIVNESS.

One of the most difficult things we have to do as followers of Jesus is to forgive those who have offended us. We have heard it many times; forgive your enemies and this is easy to say but not an easy thing to do. \ Perhaps it would help if we first thought about how much forgiveness God has granted us from childhood to the present. How often have we depended on and sought Gods understanding and mercy.

Perhaps it would also help if we understood a little bit more about forgiveness.

Forgiveness is NOT denying an injustice or a hurt. Forgiveness is NOT excusing the other. Forgiveness is NOT forgetting. Forgiveness is NOT a feeling or an emotion. Forgiveness is NOT an option as a Christian.

What is Forgiveness? -Forgiveness is an act of the will. The will simply says Yes or No. It is a decision that you, the offended makes; the favor you do to yourself. - Forgiveness only takes one (you). Reconciliation takes two. -Forgiveness is the essence of being Christian. -Forgiveness is more important to you who forgives than it is to the one forgiven. -Forgiveness frees you - unburdens - unchains - unknots. -Forgiveness is a process; it takes time and grace. -Forgiveness, in the Christian sense, involves a two- fold decision: 1) to renounce hatred and desire to destroy and 2) to will the offenders good or conversion or correction.

PRACTICAL HELPS IN FORGIVING OTHERS: 1. Dont use or hold the offense against the person. Stop

throwing it in his/her face. 2. Dont talk about it all the time. Stop going over the

story. That only keeps it alive in you. 3. Choose not to dwell on it in your thoughts. Change

the station. Put in another tape or disc. 4. Forgiveness is a processa decision of the mind.

Give it time. 5. Pray over it. 6. Be honest. Acknowledge your hurt and what hap-

pened. It is part of your past. 7. Did you have any part in the situation? There are 2

sides to everything. Try to see the offender in a dif-ferent light. Maybe something led him/her to do it.

    8. Think of all the times you have been forgiven. Espe-cially how much God has forgiven you.

    9. What will happen if you do not forgive? It grows like a cancer. It effects others especially mutual friends and family members.

    10. Bring it to prayer again! Remind yourself that God loves the person as He loves you.

Lord, help me to forgive. Examples of forgiveness in scripture: Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15) Woman taken in adultery (Jn 8: 1-11) Examples in our own day: Year 2006the shootings in Lancaster, Pa. of the Amish children in their school house, the Amish commu-nity forgave the shooter. Year 2012 the shootings in the Colorado movie house; the parents of the victims forgave the shooter. Year 2015the shootings in a church in Charles-ton, South Carolina; family members forgave the shooter. You might ask- How could they do this; forgive these people who killed their children, family, friends?

The answer is simple but profound - It is through the grace of God and their own sincere faith, love and deep

    desire to live as Christ.

Think of every time you say the Our Father, forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. The more you forgive, the more you have of Gods forgiveness; the more you give away, the more you receive. Gods forgiveness must go through you to others. *********************

The Lord never tires of forgiving. It is we who tire of asking for forgiveness. Pope Francis
