BULLETIN October 2019 Newsletter for Donald Coburn Wing and Buckland Nursing Home. A JOINT LETTER FROM THE FACILITY MANAGER AND THE CEO – OCTOBER 2019 Dear Residents, staff, family and friends. Welcome to Spring! The weather is turning, and we had a fabulous September. This year was my very first Fete and what an experience it was! It was so good to see residents, family, staff and friends out and about on a rather sunny Saturday. Thank you to everybody who participated, it was a wonderful day. I certainly enjoyed it and I walked home with more than one bargain…. The new menu is in full swing and thanks to Jenny and the catering team we are now able to offer you a variety of hot supper menu choices 7 days a week. We have also created a new visual menu, enabling you to choose your meals based on actual photographs of the menu items. You may have noticed a few new friendly faces around Buckland recently. To continue to provide the excellent service you deserve, we have welcomed a dozen new staff members to our team. In addition, we have engaged a new dietician, Page. If you are interested in meeting with Page just let staff know and they will arrange this for you. As you are aware, the royal commission is now in progress for over ten months. We have heard some devastating stories however; we also feel encouraged to continue with the Buckland way of providing safe, high quality care and services. October is going to be my third month at Buckland and I already feel at home. Everybody is always so kind and caring. A special thanks to our CEO Liz, who is currently working on site to provide support and invaluable information as I settle in. I would also like to remind you all that my door is always open. If you have any concerns, suggestions or just would like to have a yarn come and see me. Alternatively let staff know if you would like to speak with me in your home and I will visit you promptly. Lastly the staff member of the month is Sandhya Bastoa. Sandhya is always helpful and radiates a positive personality at all times. Congratulations. With no further ado, I am handing this month newsletter over to Liz: Warm Regards, Johannes Brockhaus. Dear Residents, staff, family and friends. Welcome to Spring! The weather is turning, and we had a fabulous September. This year was my very first Fete and what an experience it was! It was so good to see residents, family, staff and friends out and about on a rather sunny Saturday. Thank you to everybody who participated, it was a wonderful day. [Cont. from front page ….] on Saturday the 21 September. I have to thank our Diversional Therapy team for making it such a lovely day for the residents.

I know many of them enjoyed seeing the items they had made prior to the fete sitting ‘pride of place’ on the new goods and garden stalls. I also enjoyed seeing so many of the residents’ family and friends here on the day of the fete; the support that is given by so many is greatly appreciated.

The fete was also a great financial success raising significantly more than last year. The coffers were somewhat boosted by the Roorda family pies. They are also a great drawcard for many to attend and again this year they did fantastically well. The funds raised will be used to provide

additional items of comfort for the residents of the home. On the weather front, we are just starting to experience warmer days and no doubt we can look forward to a hot and most likely dry summer. I

would ask all relatives and friends to be mindful of not taking their loved ones out into the heat of the day where possible and when on outings to ensure they are offered frequent drinks, a sun hat and a bit of shade where at all possible. It’s wonderful to be able to be out and about, but it’s

also important to ensure its an enjoyable experience without any negative outcomes. In closing for this month, I acknowledge Johannes our Facility Manager. I know he has personally met all the residents and many of the

relatives and friends. He has certainly ‘hit the ground running’ and I’m sure we will continue to see the evidence of his enthusiasm and passion for aged care in the coming months and years. Until next month………………Liz

DCW BUS DRIVE

On Monday the 16th of

September, we made the most

of the Spring sunshine and we

took a full bus on a drive to

the upper Blue Mountains.

Our first stop was Linden

where we were able to admire

the gardens that featured in

the Mid Mountain Garden

Festival. We then drove

further up the mountain and

saw with pleasure the spring

flowers such as azaleas,

clivias, flowering blossoms

magnolias, rhododendrons,

among others along the way.

We pulled over once we

reached Cahills Lookout

where an afternoon tea was

enjoyed whilst taking in the

panoramic views. A special

thank you to our driver Norm

for taking us on this trip.

BNH & DCW BIRTHDAY PARTY

The Birthday Celebrations for our residents who were born in the month of September were held on the 23

rd in the BNH and 26

th in

the DCW. We had many in attendance ready to celebrate with the theme of “Spring-time”; both areas were decorated with flower arrangements and accompanied by a spring-time quiz. Residents enjoyed socialising with

one another and sharing their experiences with others who previously had their own gardens and those who are currently maintaining one. We followed the quiz by singing all together for the Birthday celebrants and enjoying the cake and other snacks during Happy Hour. The party wasn’t over until we had a dance to “New York New York” by Frank Sinatra”, Pictured above is Helen T and Roger G having a dance! Thank you to all residents and relatives who joined in and made the party extra special! Anuja (LLC).

MUSIC WITH IAN PRICHARD

Our musical afternoon with the one man band - Ian Pritchard was held on Wednesday 25

th September in the BNH ML. Ian charmed

us by performing music from the 1950-60s including songs of Elvis, The Beatles, Rock-n-Roll, Rhythm & Blues, L.O.V.E. and many more hits of the era. It was lovely to see so many residents and family members singing along to the well known songs whilst tapping their feet and some even getting up to have a dance. Thankyou to Ian for a joyful afternoon, we are all looking forward to your future appearances in Buckland. Anuja (LLC)

DID YOU KNOW? MOVING ON AUDITS MAY 2019

Planning and Leadership Audit

The industry average for this audit was 90.4%, Buckland realised 97.5%.

This audit looked at the way the organisation undertakes its management

role and responsibilities. Questions covered in this audit included the fact

that Buckland does have a strategic plan, that this plan states organi-

sational objectives, timeframes for the achievement of these objects, etc.

Skin Care Audit

Buckland achieved 99.2% in this audit that reviewed the way in which the

organization manages each resident’s skin integrity, wounds, etc. The

industry average is also quite good with the benchmark figure being 95.7%.

Areas covered in this audit include the fact that the organisation has written

policies and procedures; that there are adequate resources available to

properly care for consumers skin integrity; that incident reporting

mechanisms are in place to report any skin breakdown or issue; and that

care plans around skin maintenance are developed and regularly reviewed.

Continence Management Audit

Buckland received 100% in this audit against a benchmark figure of 96.2%.

This audit reviewed the manner in which Buckland assesses consumers

continence needs, provides appropriate continence aids, trains and

educates staff, assists consumers with toileting, etc.

Palliative Care Audit

This very important audit assessed the manner in which Buckland provides

for the terminal care wishes and the palliation of consumers. There is very

little that we do within the organisation that is more important than meeting

the final care needs of our consumers and the expectations of their loved

ones. It is therefore gratifying to be able to register 91.3%, results in this

area of care delivery against an industry figure of 89.5%. This audit

reviewed areas of care such as staff education; the use of Advance Care

Directives; assessment of consumers care needs; care plan development;

etc.
