Dear Parents/Guardians,
The collage of pictures inside this Bulletin, represent an uplifting celebration of our Dominican charism, history and tradition. It was a pleasure to participate in this Mass, not only with our immediate community, but also our extended Dominican family, in the way of staff and student representatives from St Mary’s College, Blackfriars Priory School, Cabra Dominican College and members of our College Board and Dominican Education Australia.
In preparation for this special Eucharistic celebration, during Religion lessons, all students reflected on how they use their hands / feet / voice / heart to carry on the work of Christ in our world. This formed the artistic backdrop behind the altar. The chosen theme was inspired by the work of Dominic himself, as well as by a famous story, of this statue (pictured) of Christ which was said to be damaged in WWII. The statue with outstretched arms is still
SUBJECT SELECTION FOR 2020Currently Year 5 and Year 7-11 students are
involved in the subject selection process for 2020. Your daughter would benefit
from discussing her choices with a trusted adult at home.
• Year 5 (Year 6/2020) and Year 7 (Year 8/2020) subject selection forms are due back to the College by Monday 12 August.
• Year 8 (Year 9/2020) and Year 9 (Year 10/2020) students were a part of a Subject Selection Assembly recently, during a Pastoral Care lesson.
• Year 10 (Year 11/2020) and Year 11 (Year 12/2020) Subject Selection Assemblies will take place over the coming week. Students will be introduced to the process which culminates into the Year 10 and 11 Subject Selection Day. On Thursday 29 August, each student and her parent meet for an interview to discuss selections with a Home Class teacher. More detailed information will come your way.
standing and the decision made to leave the statue in its disrepair is a reminder that “Christ has no hands but ours”. St Teresa of Avila’s work was also inspired by the same notion.
I would firstly like to extend gratitude to all who had a special part in this celebration. In particular, congratulations to the choir and musicians, under the direction of Miss Stephanie Neale, who was assisted by Mrs Heather Day and Mrs Anna Sordillo. I would also like to thank Sr Hieu Tran, Mr Gavin Reeves and Mrs Josie Revesz, who worked to convert the Gymnasium into an appropriate sacred space. Teaching young people the art of reflective prayer is not easy. Miss Genevieve Taheny (Liturgy Coordinator) always puts heart into preparing for religious celebrations at St Dominic’s, allowing our students to have a catechetical experience of congregational prayer. Thank you, Genevieve!
The much-anticipated holiday for the Feast of St Dominic will be enjoyed by all at the College on this Friday 9 August
National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Congratulations to Anna Ngo (Year 11), who has been awarded a place in the National Youth Science Forum; to be held in Canberra during the January 2020 summer break. Places are highly sought-after, so we commend Anna on achieving this well-deserved opportunity.

Primary News
All classes are looking forward to the many exciting events which lay ahead in Term 3. Our major focus in this short
but very busy week is St Dominic. We have been learning about his life and enjoyed a special St Dominic’s Day Mass celebration yesterday. The theme this year invited all year levels to reflect on how they use their hands or their feet or their voice or their heart to carry out the work of Christ in their heart. Our Year 2 Class shared their thoughts:
“I use my voice to show kindness and help other to be happy.” - Ivy“I use my hands to pack food for the poor.” - Elvie “I use my voice to speak to lonely people.” - Bryona “ I use my heart to care for others and have bought food and drink for those in need.” - Lucy
Year 6 Scrapbooking Day and reflections Last Friday the Year 6 Class celebrated morning Mass in the Chapel and then participated in ‘Scrapbooking Day’. This is a much-loved event where a family member joins the class for the morning and helps with the construction of pages for their daughter’s scrapbook. We also acknowledge the hard work and organisation from Mrs Belinda Baker who creates a smooth running and creative event.
The Chapel was full as we were supported by our families who love us. After Mass we had scrapbooking morning. Our guests shared morning tea while we prepared to set up the room. We enjoyed having our family members there while we began our scrap books. There was a lot of conversation, laughter, tears and stories shared. We hope one day to look back at our scrapbooks and reflect on the fun and memories we have had. Many of you reading this Bulletin today may have been involved in making a scrapbook and will appreciate the ‘specialness’ of days like these. We thank our teachers and adults for their help and a special thank you to Mrs Baker and Mrs Richter for their support. - Millicent, Anita and Victoria
Scrapbooking morning was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to catch up with families. - Lyana
Mum came to help me and it was great to hear her ideas and talk through some of my pages. - Charlotte
Millie and I had our mum and Lin (our nanna) come to help us. We both enjoyed spending time with them while working on our scrapbooks. - Annabel
Year 5 Art
We have kicked off the term by looking at two-point perspective in art. We created these visually stunning floating boxes to display in our class by drawing straight lines to our vanishing points and using pencils and outliner as our mediums. We also incorporated shading to give the effect of a light source. We couldn’t be happier with the results.
In and around the classroom:
Sister Jillian HaveyOur Year 3s with
their card. All classes from
Reception to Year 6 have kept Sister Jill in their prayers
and they have made thoughtful cards with well wishes, which will be given to her this week. We wish
you all a happy St Dominic’s Day.
YEAR 5
Social MediaIt is always timely to ask the question; do you know what your daughter is involved in on social media or if your daughter is on social media? If the answer is no, then it is very important for you to have that conversation with her. If you need any support in navigating this sometimes-challenging area, please do not hesitate to contact your daughter’s teacher or me.

“ZOOM” @ the Patch TheatreInspired by iconic children’s’ book “Harold and The Purple Crayon,” ZOOM channels the same philosophy; a child who makes sense of their world through art. The show is driven by the power of ‘child logic’, combined with the magic of science.

Week 3 AssemblyOur Week 3 Assembly was hosted by the Year 4 Class. We thank Mrs Fenton for supporting the girls with their presentation. They were very organised, enthusiastic and well prepared. Our next Assembly will be hosted by the Year 3 Class in Week 5.
Thursday Night NetballOur teams enjoyed their first games for this season with 3 wins and 1 loss. The coaches were pleased with the girls’ efforts.
RemindersThe extended Kiss and Drop Zone is generally working well. We will become more streamlined as time goes by, but we are pleased with its initial phase in process. Please remind other family members who pick up your daughters that they are not to leave their car whilst in the Kiss and Drop Zone and definitely no u-turns outside the school or 3-point turns in the drive way.
Just a reminder that this term Independence Day is on a Thursday. Thank you to all parents for your support and a reminder if you are supporting in a classroom on a Thursday, please come in as you usually do.
Fete DonationsFete donations are coming in well and we thank you for your support with this. Thank you to all the families who have already donated to the Auction Class Hampers and they are certainly looking like very tempting Auction purchases.

Pop-Up Art Gallery Celebrating SALAThe South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival is held annually and is the largest state-wide celebration of Visual Art each year. To celebrate, Staff and Students of St Dominic’s held a ‘Pop Up Gallery’ in the Cloisters of the Senior School. The diversity of entries was wide and included artworks completed as part of the Visual Art curriculum, as well as those in private collections, and those undertaken purely as personal expression. It takes bravery to showcase such personal creative work. We wish to acknowledge the hard work, and generosity of artistic spirit with which these works were greeted during the exhibition.
Ms Annelise Johnson, Visual Arts Teacher
A REVIEW:What a wonderful collection of art work. It was wonderful to see the variety of landscapes, the still-life works, the sensitive and wonderfully realistic portraits that capture flesh tones and a sense of 3D space so effectively through the use of light and dark... and of course the quirky clay sculptures are so much fun.It made me stop and think how each piece spoke to me, what I saw in the subject and what it said about the artist. It was also a pleasure being able to engage in conversation with students and share our views on the artists’ works, or hear the artists themselves explain their ideas and compliment them on their achievements. Art is for everyone, and the Art Department at St Dominic’s does such a fabulous job of nurturing that creative talent. Hopefully the girls will continue creating, and will go on to visit galleries in Adelaide and around the world from what they have been encouraged to explore here. Well done. It lifts my sprits every day.

Year 11’s Memorable and fun filled Trip to CanberraOn the 23rd of July, 19 Year 11 students escaped Adelaide’s “cold” weather to face the even colder weather of Canberra. Setting off after lunch, anticipation was high and the go-pros were out to start recording the memorable five days ahead.
We visited many attractions: National Capital Exhibition, Old Parliament House (Museum of Austra l i an Democracy AND National Electoral Centre), Parliament House, Australian War Memorial, National Library of Australia, Questacon, CSIRO, Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Mount Ainslie and the High Court of Australia.
One of the most memorable and enduring activities was the bike ride around Lake Burley Griffin. A student’s perspective:
It was an 8km ride that allowed us to view many beautiful views of Canberra and a chance for us to feel the fresh (very cold) Canberra wind against our faces. It was definitely worth having sore aching bodies that we had to endure the next few days.
The other activity that students were fully engaged in was the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial.

Some of the Year 11 Student from our St Dominic’s have recently undertaken this educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.
Technology Club Developing a Wind TunnelDuring Semester 1, the Technology Club worked on designing and creating a functioning wind-tunnel for the purpose of testing 3D printed dragsters created by the Year 9 Architecture and Product Design Class. This wind-tunnel is an apparatus that produces a stream of smoke past models in order to test the aerodynamics and investigate the effect of wind on the object. We researched existing wind-tunnels in order to decide on a design to refine on Sketchup. We also had to source suitable construction materials within a budget.
Cardboard formed the structure, and a fan and straws were used to produce and direct the airflow. The supports were 3D printed after the original cardboard supports buckled under the weight. In order to see the effects of the wind, we debated using dry ice or incense to produce the ‘smoke’ that would flow over the model. Incense did not produce enough smoke, so dry ice was used, though it is not the best option as it is more expensive and cannot be easily stored. Additionally, the wind-tunnel was spray painted black to make the smoke more visible.
Now that we have finished this task, we are moving on to another challenging project: creating a VR (virtual reality) model of the entire school, starting with the chapel.
