Dear Parents,

In Holy Week 2017The invitation that Holy Week brings to each one of us is to open our hearts, - to the God who gave us life, to the Son of God who lived among us and died for us, to the Resurrected Christ whose Spirit is alive in us. Easter calls upon us to respond – as individuals and as members of the Christian community.

One of our Prefects at this week’s meeting read a prayer for Easter which is printed here. It is a comforting and confident prayer. In an uncertain and dangerous world where innocent people die, in shocking circumstances, there is still the promise of a peace which lies beyond trauma and war.

Lord God you promise the peace of a still lakeEven in the midst of a storm.

You promise the peace of a slumbering child even in the midst of tension and disagreement. You promise the peace of a poppy field even in the place of heartbreak and devastation.Your promise is a peace that surpasses our

human understanding. So I choose to rest by the still waters, to lie

down and rest among the poppies.Your resurrection declared peace over trauma,

power over death, and life everlasting.

Change to the Date of GALA DAYThe major student event for Term 2 is Gala Day and the date has been moved from week 2 to the Friday of Week 3 viz., Friday 19th May. The change has been made because of the fact that week 2 has its share of commitments – Parent Teacher Interviews on Monday 8th May, and the NAPLAN tests for Years 3, 5, 7, & 9 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The 2017 Gala Day theme is the 1900s Era. Students are encouraged to choose a deacade of interest and then plan from there. They may like to channel Gatsby, come dressed as a character from Grease, or be a cool Flower Power Girl. Or maybe your daughter would like to be a 1970s Cheer Leader or a famour singer from the 1980s for a day. We look forward to seeing what creative and low cost ideas students come up with. The holidays will provide an excellent opportunity for students to create their costumes etc.

Staff members leading this venture are Rita Shepherd and Greg Larwood, supported by Old Scholar Jacqui Mills. May your journey be safe – I am sure it will be fascinating.

In and around the classrooms:

YEAR 3

We have come to the end of a very busy term. The students and teachers will have some time to recharge

their batteries, ready for the new challenges and learning in Term 2. We would like to thank our parent community for their support and words of encouragement throughout the term.

Thank you to Karen Nesgos who made the beautiful ‘Chocolate Egg Tree’ with the Year 3 class. It is to be raffled on Thursday. It’s not too late to get a 50c ticket. All proceeds will go to project compassion.

LEARNING ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LAP): If you would like to volunteer some time to help in a classroom, please put a note in your daughter’s diary.

REMINDER: bread roll day is tomorrow. Students will not be able to purchase lunch from the Tuck Shop. You should have been given a note detailing requirements for the day and the $2 donation.

FAREWELLS: Father Alex Vickers was farewelled by staff, parents and students at last week’s assembly. He was presented with a gift and a booklet of thanks from the Primary School. We have been very blessed to have known him for nine years. We have always appreciated the support and encouragement he has given our St Dominic’s Priory College community. Our Primary School students have valued his guidance with friday morning masses and the sacramental program. We sincerely wish him well as he begins work in his new parish in Brisbane.

We are grateful for all the hard work and expertise Mrs Amy Waters has given our students with our music program, since the beginning of 2016. Our students benefitted from her good teaching practice. We wish her well in her new teaching position at Saint Aloysius College.

Ms Deb Osborne will be on long service leave until Week 6 next term. We wish her happy, safe travels and look forward with some jealousy, to hearing about her adventures in Spain, Portugal and Europe. Mrs Francine Saint will be working full time in Year 2, in Ms Osborne’s absence.

Mrs Raelene White will be on long service leave for part of Term 2 and her Resource Based Learning teaching component will be taught by Ms Josie McKinnon. Josie is well known to the students and will bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the position.

STuDENT ENGAGEMENT: One of the positive aspects about teaching in an R-12 School is the connections that are formed between Primary and Secondary students. The Year 2 Class have been fortunate to have one of our Year 10 students plan and prepare a tennis program.

As part of my MYP Personal Project, I have conducted a tennis program with eight of the Year 2 girls over the past four weeks. The main focus of the program was to teach each student the basic skills of tennis and encourage each student to be active and enjoy playing sport. I have really enjoyed coaching each of the girls and they have all improved over the weeks. Thank you for all having such a positive attitude each lesson and always willing to listen and learn something new. I thank all the girls for participating and hope that they will continue with tennis in the future.

Isabella Haddad Year 10

I really enjoyed tennis with Isabella, it was so much fun. I liked learning about the strokes the best. Some of them are volley, backhand and forehand.

LITERACY: VisualisationCompetent readers automatically create visual images as they read. Being able to do this creates a more active reader and therefore improves comprehension skills. In class, I often talk about ‘the picture in my head’ that is formed when I read and will refer to the words or phrases that have helped me create this picture. We can then make comparisons between my visual image and others’, justifying what gave us these mental pictures.

You can try this at home by asking your daughter to draw a picture of what she has imagined after reading a description in a book (it works best if the book doesn’t have too many illustrations). This gives you an idea of what she has understood without asking any questions or doing any writing. Talk about what led her to that image and the words and phrases the author has used. When you watch a movie of a book you have read, this offers a great opportunity to compare the images on the screen with your mental image. You could say ‘that is just how I pictured that character’ or ‘I didn’t imagine her house would look like that.

This skill can then be transferred to writing where we can encourage children to ensure they have enough description for the reader to create a visual image of the story. Giving them an awareness of how a reader interacts with a text can have a positive impact on your daughter’s writing as well as her comprehension and enjoyment of a text.

La FestaLast Wednesday, 5th of April, the Receptions to Year 5s all enjoyed the comical antics of James Liotta and Mario Cicitta from La Comica Variety Productions based in Melbourne, in the performance titled, ‘La Festa’.James was Nonno Arlecchino and Del Piero. I thought it was fun because we got to dance and sing to the songs. The games that they played was Soccer with Allessandro Del Piero and Scopa. - BrianaI thought it was really hilarious. My favourite bit was when Mario vacuum-cleaned his Nonno. - Lauren SI thought the show was very funny because the man Mario put the vacuum cleaner in people’s faces. They used funny voices like Nonno’s voice and they moved in funny ways like the man Mario brang out the sword. - Tam DI learnt a card came called Scopa. I like Scopa because the cards are interesting. The show was so funny I almost laughed my head off. This show is my favourite. I loved the show but it was so loud it almost blew my ears off. But I love La Festa. - Faridah

Year 11 French: Food & Health Living Presentation by Chef Patrice ulbrichOn Wednesday 5th of April, the Year 11/12 French Class received a presentation from Chef Patrice Ulbrich to complement the unit on food and healthy living.

Chef Patrice was a very nice, funny and patient man who taught us a lot about French food culture and the cultural foods in each French region. It was also a good learning experience for us to be able to listen and talk to a French native speaker. To add to the fascinating presentation, Chef Patrice prepared some food for us to try. We got to try three types of cheese (goat’s cheese fromage de chèvre, camembert and cantal) with home-baked lavosh. Did you know that there are more than 365 different French cheeses, one for each day of the year?

He also brought some delicious croissants and pains au chocolats for us to have with our jus de pomme. Overall, the presentation from Chef Patrice was very educational and enjoyed by the entire class. We look forward to visiting his café soon.

Year 9 French Film Festival: L’Odyssée Last Thursday, 6th May, the Year 9 French Classes attended the annual French Film Festival. We saw “L’Odyssée”, based on the life and explorations of the famous oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau. It is an exceptional film about this world-renowned figure. Mme Bosco & Sr Trieu also accompanied the group.

Year 10 Forensic Science Workshop Monday 3rd of April 2017On Monday 3rd of April, the Year 10 Science Classes took part in a Forensics Workshop entitled ‘A Case of Identity’. During the session, students investigated the fictitious murder of Sally Kerr, a 17 year old girl from a wealthy family, who had been reported missing by her parents four days prior to her body being found by joggers.

There were multiple items that were used as evidence to find out the cause of Sally’s death, when she died, and who killed her. An autopsy showed that Sally was drugged with GHB and killed by a blow to the head. Examination of digital evidence on Facebook, CCTV footage, fingerprint and shoe imprint analysis, and DNA profiling further enabled the Year 10 ‘investigators’ to establish a timeline and identify the suspect.

The students really enjoyed this experience and learnt a lot about the many aspects that are involved in forensic science. They found it interesting to see the steps a forensic scientist goes through to solve the crime, and have the opportunity to experience it for themselves.

Planning a Clean Up over the Holidays? The “Classic Treasures” stall is now in the process of collecting goods for the forthcoming Fete. If you have any of the following items that you no
