The future of Tzaneen’s largest “green elephant” is still very much in the dark. Our efforts to obtain information explaining where the millions of Rands pumped into the Sapekoe Tea Estate over the past three years went, failed.

Several efforts to rescue the estate (or what is left of it) failed dismally, leaving hundreds of workers jobless and their families in distress.

The latest collapse started when the estate’s custodian in the rede-velopment programme, the Greater Tzaneen Economic Development Agency (Gteda), was ordered off the tea plantations in March last year, with talk of prospects of a take-over by companies from the East.

The order came from Mr Jacob Marule, Limpopo’s MEC for agricul-ture serving in the executive council of sacked premier Cassell Mathale. Marule’s predecessor, Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Dube, was anxious to get the project on track, but was transferred to health and social development.

When the newly appointed Premier, Mr Stan Mbathabatha, took over, he got rid of Marule and seven other MEC’s in his Exco. The new MEC for agriculture is Ms Rosina Semenya who, it is hoped, could bring a new lease of life for the starving tea estate.

The chief executive officer of Gteda, Mr Kwena Mapotho, said since Marule’s ruling the estate took a nose-dive and close to 500 jobs were lost. At this stage only 63 people are employed to maintain the 1 200 ha estate and tea plantations — facing an impossible task!

Mapotho said an important meeting with Semenya on the case is imminent in an effort to create a new structure in resuscitating the project, as it will play a prominent role in Gteda’s plans to establish and promote tourism in Tzaneen.

The Bulletin published numerous articles about the failures of Sapekoe Estate and the huge waste of ratepayers’ money over the last three years, but it was repeatedly dismissed by the authorities involved.

At one stage Mr Roger Duffield of Limpopo Green Estate Holdings planned to harvest the tea for the extraction of a liquid which could be used against major diseases like cancer and Hiv/Aids. The project

showed an employment potential of thousands of jobs, but was cancelled when Gteda failed to honour their agreement with the company.

On 14 February 2013 the Bulletin (above left) revealed for the ump-teenth time that the project was a failure once again, with the

retrenchment of 700 workers and a total loss of R76m.

This was vehemently denied by Gteda; and an alternative

local newspaper couldn’t resist the temptation to use their front page (left) for an ill-conceived report, “repudiating” the Bulletin’s report.

We left it at that and patiently waited for the facts to surface, which has now happened — almost a year later.

We broke the news about Sapekoe’s collapse way back in 2006 and since then we have kept our finger on the pulse.

We have interviewed dozens of people, we have collected hundreds of documents, we have seen confidential correspondence and financial reports and our numerous reports on the failed attempts to revive Sapekoe has not been proved wrong once!

The downfall last year came after the intervention of agriculture MEC Jacob Marule. A month later Gteda had to dissociate with the project, leaving behind many unanswered questions.

Four months later Marule faced a claim against him for R1,5 billion by business man Thabo Mokwena, for breach of contract involving a chicken project.

A wasteful project!

Page 2: Bulletin 140228

Wees groot asseblief net so ordentlik soos wat Vlieg altyd is, jislaaik!

Craig John Woodward  As far as I know the SA law concerning school bags states that a school

bag may not exceed 10 percent of the childs body weight. We weighed my daughters school bag and she is carrying 11 kg! — 4 kg over the required weight for her weight! No wonder she is complaining about back pain. I agree that their text books should be handed in at the classroom after lessons .

Sanette Schoeman  Ek stem saam.

Hokkies of “lockers” vir elke kind.

• Younger school kids are labouring under the sheer weight of more books than can fit into their bookcases. Do you feel it okay for these youngsters to carry this weight and do you feel it is necessary in the first place to have to carry so many books?

The station manager of Radio GTfm — the Greater Tzaneen’s radio station, kindly spon-sored by Tzaneen’s ratepayers — cried foul when the Bulletin approached him about the radio station’s alleged dire financial situation.

After a couple of tries to get audited finan-cial statements of Radio GTfm from Mr Te-batso Maapola, the man in charge, he told us that he would no longer communicate with us, since we intimidate him! He also warned that if an-yone would publish “the station’s affairs, I will take them to court”.

(Well, today we are publishing some “affairs” and we are looking forward to meet Mr Maapola in court. — Publisher)

In the mean time the financial situation of the Greater Tzaneen’s so-called community radio remains unknown. Maapola’s main ex-cuse was that ”the newspapers are not stake-holders in the institution”.

We also contacted the CEO of the Greater Tza-neen Economic Development Agency (Gteda),

The spokesman for the department of sport, arts and culture were at a loss for words when he was questioned on the more than an hour late arrival of his MEC, Mme Mirri-am Ramadwa, the GTM’s mayor, Ms Dikele-di Mmetle, and other delegates at a function at Ben Vorster High School.

The launch of the school sport focus pro-gramme was set to start at 14:00, but after more than an hour later, the delegates sauntered lei-surely into the hall for the formal proceedings.

According to the spokesman, Mr Kathu Sadi-ki, the delegates were scheduled for another function at Moime Primary School in Lenyenye. “We asked the principal of Ben Vorster a day before the launch to postpone the function to a later time, but he could not send the message out in time and the guests had to wait.”

The headmaster of Ben Vorster, Mr Chris Deneysschen, confirmed that the department informed him of the situation and said the or-ganisers gave him a continuous progress re-

port. “As soon as the MEC arrived, things went smoothly and she gave a very good speech.”

Ben Vorster has been identified as one of fourteen focus schools in Mopani because of their involvement in different sport ac-tivities. “Because our resources are limited, we were not able to go to all the schools. Ben Vorster will now be trusted to get other schools involved,” explained Sadiki.

— Roelien [email protected]

‘You intimidate me!’— complains radio boss

Mr Kwena Maphoto, who told us to collect the financial statements from his personal assis-tant. However, when we approached her, she refused to hand over the statements to us, say-ing that Maapola told her not to do so.

We have been told by DJ’s and news read-ers who left the station, that their salaries had been cut. A concerned deejay who left alleged that the unhealthy financial situation at GTfm

resulted in news readers receiving monthly salaries of R1 000, while deejays were paid R3 000. DJ’s who

spoke on condition of anonymity (for fear of victimisation) recently said that their month-ly salaries were increased by R500, after they had complained to management.

When asked about the finances of GTfm Maphoto said Gteda had only played a role in the establishment of the radio station and that they later handed it over to the board of directors. “We are no longer having control of the station, as it is independent,” he said.

It is rumoured that the station’s dysfunctionality might have resulted from the recent resignation of four or more of the ten board members. A former board member, Mr Percy Machethe, resigned after he had been elected as Speaker of the Greater Tzaneen Municipality. He said to us that as far as his knowledge goes, the current board of directors’ term had expired but was extended until a new board would be appointed.

It is not clear who should appoint the di-rectors, since it is not known who are the stakeholders. The GTfm’s affairs are clearly shrouded in mystery. And the man at the helm refuses to discuss it, crying foul when asked for information.

“I will take anyone who publishes... to court”

We would like to introduce you to...Roelien Vorster, who has joined Bulletin’s editorial team. While she gets better acquainted with Limpopo’s Lowveld and our communities, she will gradually take over the editorship of the newspaper from founder editor and pub-lisher Francois Aucamp. He will, however, con-tinue as editor-in-chief of our publications (i.e. AgriBulletin and the various supplements that are regularly being published).

Winfred Baloyi, who has successfully com-pleted her one year in-ternship with the Bulle-tin, has decided to join us full-time as a graphic designer. She studied graphic design at Jeppe College, specialising in advertisement design; and she has a special interest in designing ad-vertisements, but she is rather flexible in her ap-proach. She is thus also doing page design and layout for our various publications.

Yvonne Ndlovu, who has been promoted to co-ordinator in our graphic design depart-ment. She graduated from the Tshwane Uni-versity of Technology. Three years ago she successfully completed her journalism internship with us (Bulletin is Seta accredited for in-house training) and then de-cided to stay on with us. Yvonne will now co-or-dinate the daily work-flow in the grahic design department.

Joy Mojela, who has started her internship as a journalist with the Bulletin. She gradu-ated in media studies at the University of Cape Town. Joy hails from Nkowankowa and de-cided to go and study in Cape Town in order to gain knowledge of and to experience oth-er parts of the country and its peoples. The internships stretch over one year and Joy will be working as a reporter for the next year.

Why are we waiting, Madam MEC?

CRIME SCENEBulletin Crime Reporter

Cause for concernCriminal behaviour in Bolobedu was a cause for concern over the past weekend and police nabbed 57 people for criminal behaviour. Police caught 23 people for instigating business robbery, violation of a protection order, assault and for illegal gambling. A group of nineteen culprits were nabbed for drinking in public, assault GBH, housebreaking and theft. More arrests were made and seven people were held for failure to report an accident, possession of suspected stolen property, theft, armed robbery, while another four of them were taken in for contravention of a protection order and for illegal immigration.

HeldWhile it might seem like Tzaneen is the new hub for criminal activities, police arrested 105 people over the past week for engaging in illegal dealings: 21 for being in possession of housebreaking objects, assault, shoplifting, theft and assault GBH while ten others were arrested for attempted theft, robbery, kidnapping, possession of dagga, housebreaking and theft. More people were charged with statutory rape, child abuse, attempted murder, illegal gambling and nine people were arrested. A gang of 68 culprits faced the wrath of the law for prostitution, illegal gambling, drinking in public and contravening the Road Traffic Act.

Residents demand efficient policing

Maake police have received a list of demands from Lenyenye residents. Residents took to the streets and marched to the police station, while chanting songs condemning police for their failures. They demand enough police vehicles to respond to emergencies and to ensure better police visibility. They also demanded drastic action to be taken against corrupt police officers and they want police to address residents in their native language. They also demanded transparency in police dealings with the community. According to Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, an internal probe into the allegations are under way and a statement will be released when finalised.

Residents kept waiting in vainLocal leaders in Shihoko outside Tzaneen have kept the community waiting in vain for clean and accessible water over the past four years. Residents have perceived this as a promise of a health hazard to the village population. One of the residents said “the river is the last resort to get water. We have no other option but to drink the same water which is also used by animals.”

Residents have accused their local leaders of having made a promise which they failed to keep. Local leaders are said to have previously convened a community gathering with the intention to address issues of water shortages in the community, but the gathering was said to have ended up fruitlessly. “The only time we get basic services is when there is an election campaign. We know that we are being taken for a rough ride by the leaders,” said the angry resident. The councillor Ms Maria Mola had instigated the purchase of water tanks for water storage, but all that ended up in a mess. Some of the water tanks were apparently stolen and sold for their own enrichment. The Greater Tzaneen municipality (GTM) was not available for

comment at the time of going to press.

Reward up for grabsPolice are offering a R100 000 reward to anyone with information on the brutal killing of 20-year-old Ms Kgomotso Roalane of Relela. She was reportedly found dead with her right hand sliced off. Police also found house keys and a cell phone in her abdomen. According to provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Ronel Otto “a R100 000 reward is offered to anyone with information which can lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspects in court. No arrests have been made so far, but police investigations are continuing,” said Otto. People with information should contact W/o Patrick Pila on 082 759 5001 or Det/Const Vivian Gafane on 082 759 4905.

Violators nabbedOver the past week residents of Ritavi were terrorised by a syndicate which sought to deprive them their rights and valuables. Police managed, however, to arrest 41 of the culprits. Police caught sixteen culprits for participating in housebreaking, assault GBH, contravening the Road Traffic Act and for rape. Residents of Ritavi themselves apprehended seventeen people for robbery, assault, theft, and contravening the Liquor Act. A gang of six criminals were arrested for theft, possession of dagga and malicious damage to property, while two more were held for possession of suspected stolen goods.

Convictions: Last week Thursday 23- year-old Mathebula Khomelani from Dan village, Nkowankowa, appeared in the Ritavi Regional Court on charges of assault GBH. He was found guilty and has been sentenced to three years imprisonment or a penalty of R6 000. He was also declared as unfit to posses a firearm.

A march almost turned into a violent fist fight at the house of a headman after Siyand-hani Youth in Ngove, Giyani, had reminded him of a dead-line set for him to leave the village. The headman, Mr Amos Chavalala, also known as Jazeera, is one of two head-

men in the village that the youth refuse to accept as their chief. The other one is Hosi Siyandhani (Mr Famanda Chavalala). The youth earlier decided that the two head-men would be allowed ten days to leave the village and move to Ngove, where Hosi Ngove (Mr Penny Ngove) lives. “This vil-lage is the only one in the province which is situated near a big town, yet we have no water and other basic services, because we are divided between two chiefs,” said Mr Musa Maswanganyi, the deputy chairman of the Siyandhani Youth.

The youth arrived at Jazeera’s house to remind him of the deadline, when a fight broke out. Jazeera is said to have defended himself with a garden fork. His house was then stoned by the angry youth, before they moved on to the house of the second headman, Mr Hasani “Booi” Makhuvele, to remind him of his deadline.

However, the police showed up and stopped them. Only the youth leaders were escorted to his house. Booi agreed to meet with them and the community, to sort out matters of poor service delivery.

Money taken backThe news that the National Government took back more than R1 billion in grant money from Limpopo has left us with mixed feelings and in shock.

On the one hand the show of strength and discipline by Government is to be commended. We need exactly this kind of monetary discipline to make officials (and often their Ministers as well) understand that they will not be allowed to play games with public money.

On the other hand it is sad to think that Limpopo, one of the poorest provinces in the country, has been penalised by witholding this huge amount of money.

Fact of the matter is that people, vulne-rable human beings, are made to suffer be-cause of their caretakers not being able or not pepared to govern properly.

The leaders in the National Government deployed their caders in Limpopo to gov-ern. When they mess up, the leaders pe-nalise the innocent citizens.

The people of Limpopo now have to keep on using roads that are not passable, keep on sleeping in mud huts, keep on at-tending school under trees, keep on going without water, keep on having to be con-tent with sub-standard medical treatment in dilapidated state hospitals, etcetera.

There is a Latin expression which we would like to use as a warning to our gov-ernments, both Provincial and National:Abusus non tollit usum. Meaning: Abuse does not do away with use, i.e. that a thing is sometimes abused, is no reason for giv-ing up its legitimate use.

Please don’t take our money back!

God’s Haven is ‘n nie-winsgewende sorgsentrum in Tza-neen.

Thank youStaff and pupils from Pfunanane Academy write by e-mail: We would like to thank the community of Tzaneen for opening their hearts and blessed our school at Good Morn-

ing Angels on Jacaranda fm.A special thank you to the businesses and people who

donated on the morning of the broadcast. They are Radio Jacaranda, Modjadjiskloof Spar, Alert Steel, Anthony Brett, Laerskool Tzaneen, Stanford Lake College, Desiree van der Walt, Limpopo DA, Colbyn Electrical, Nashua, Dinamus Community Church, Patience Coppen and Lidelle Botha.

For more information on our beautiful school please have a look on our website www.pfunanane.org.

‘n Mens is dankbaar hiervoor, veral as jou jare al vinniger aanstoot.

The Nelson Mandela foundation has re-stored hope in the lives of many school pupils. After waiting for two years, Moime Primary School in Maake has eventually secured a sponsor through the foundation. The school has been showered with dona-

tions from Amalooloo Company who donated twenty toilets.

This school also received donations from the Germological Institute of America, Breadline Africa and Soul City, who donated five computers

with internet connec-tivity and a fully re-sourced library.

The delighted headmaster, Ms Pin-ny Wisani Malema, said “the toilets will restore the dignity of our chil-dren and the library will keep them off the streets”.

masterpiecesArtist creates7Bulletin 28 Februarie 2014

This week the Bulletin showcases one of the few recognised and prolific art-ists alive in South Africa. In peaceful surroundings, on her 29 hectare farm, Ms Ina van Schalkwyk spends at least seven hours a day painting in her well-lit studio. She attributes her success to an inborn talent, tenacity, dedication and sheer hard work.

Petite Van Schalkwyk (68), moved to Tzaneen from Pretoria, after her di-vorce some thirty years ago. She want-ed to be closer to her mother who was on a farm in Georges Valley. She was already a well-known artist having held her first exhibition of District Six works at an art gallery in Pretoria in 1976. Memora-ble was a study of two children with their clothes in tatters titled “Flenters”. The exhi-bition consisted of seventy oils, thirty pencil sketches and thirty portraits.

She was a gifted child and did her first drawing at the age of three and read Afri-kaans fluently by the time she was four. She married at twenty, lived in Pretoria, and had five daughters and one son. During this peri-od she designed and made clothes for select clients and travelled extensively in the Cape to sketch and paint. Her parents had offered her tertiary education in fine arts, but she erroneously believed that her art would re-main a hobby.

Van Schalkwyk gave art lessons to some eighty pupils in Tzaneen. She also started a successful weaving business called Sasekile and designed each carpet individu-ally. Meanwhile she spent hours observing, photographing and sketching the wildlife of the Kruger National Park.

A year later, she held what was hailed as the largest wildlife ex-

hibition in South Africa. Her exhi-bition, at the former Tzaneen Hotel, included fifty oils, 25 pencil sketches and fourteen pastel portrait stud-ies. She says, “Spencer Drake from Georges Valley sponsored the exhi-bition and really set me on my way. I’m very grateful to him.”

Van Schalkwyk needed to be closer to her frail widowed mother, so she built an art school some distance away from the family home. She cast the first 70 000 bricks herself. A double tragedy then changed her life. Her mother died and eight months later her third husband,

Matt Erasmus, had his third and fatal heart attack. She stopped art lessons, sold the weav-ing business and moved into the unfinished shell of an art school with gaping holes for windows and doors. Painting became her livelihood.

This petite artist is also pas-sionate about gardening and building. She has, over the years, transformed her gar-den into a paradise and has added on to her home to turn it into a luxurious many-bed-roomed haven.

Van Schalkwyk was commissioned to paint an oil portrait of Princess Michael of Kent holding a cheetah. The princess and her husband, Prince Michael, are patrons of the cheetah project at Kapama Lodge near Hoedspruit. Van Schalkwyk worked from a photograph taken by the Princess’s own photographer.

Princess Michael is passionate about Afri-ca. When her parents divorced, her moth-er went to live in Australia and her father bought a farm in Mozambique. She spent many happy holidays in Africa going on trips into the bush with her father.

Princess Michael flew to South Africa to christen a month old cheetah called Prince Michael. She met briefly with Van Schalk-wyk for a photographic shoot and was then whisked away to christen Prince Michael. While being interviewed by SATV Princess Michael noted that the little cheetah’s nails were extremely sharp.

In between commissions for portraits of adults and large works like her recent ba-obab tree, Van Schalkwyk likes depicting barefooted children in Victorian like settings on canvas. She believes that females who dress in modern day outfits have lost the art of femininity. All her pretty daughters as well as her dozen or so grandchildren have posed as models over the years. She still gives art lessons and has boundless energy.

Ina van Schalkwyk is seen here with Princess Michael

Today Sue Ettmayr introduces one of SA’s most acclaimed artists, Ina van Schalkwyk of Georges Valley, in the Bulletin’s exclusive series about founding mothers and fathers of our area. She has been staying in the area for the last thirty years and has really done a lot to put Tzaneen on SA’s

art map.

HOËRSKOOLBEN VORSTER

• Continued from page 1 The publication is clearly aimed at the

glorification of municipal officials (especially senior officials) and for the rest it is a rather amateurish substitution for a brag parade. Sadly, however, there is nothing of real substance to brag about.

GTM Spokesman Neville Ndlala said the purpose of the magazine is to communicate council decisions, especially regarding service delivery to the people in the GTM’s jurisdiction.

The hilarious part of the project is that only one thousand copies are printed for a municipality with an estimated 500 000 residents! So they want to get a message to approximately 500 000 people using a rag of which they print one thousand copies!

Surely, it must be a joke... but Ndlala was dead serious…

He also told us that the GTM Bulletin (not

to be confused with the proper Bulletin!) is distributed at “the GTM’s main office and multi-purpose community centres around the GTM area”.

Ndlala was not sure how many editions of the “big” magazine they have printed. “Two or three,” he said. Must be at least three, since they have used at least three printers so far: Mbhetsa, Baobab and Blue Dot.

Ndlala dramatically announced earlier this week when we asked him about the magazine that they will revert to a smaller size (A4) magazine. He added that according to a survey, 80% of the people prefer the smaller A4 size.

The size of the sample of the survey is not known, but with only a thousand copies of the magazine being distributed, not too many people would have seen it.

Fifty Gr 8 pupils of Stanford Lake College recently set off on their first ‘wild’ expedition — “The Iron Crown Escapade”. Together with staff members from the school, the young explorers were pushed beyond their comfort zones on this amazing trek through the Wolkberg. De-spite the hot weather and sore legs, everyone managed to summit

the highest mountain in Limpopo, the picturesque Iron Crown.

Some families were forced to wait for up to eight hours to re-ceive transfer docu-ments. The families said funeral arrange-ments often have to be postponed.

to be that there is only one mortuary assistant. He works alone and allegedly he is very slow.

dit so pynloos as moontlik kan terug kry.

Ruan laat reg geskied

“I like my job because it’s given me so much insight into the law and its proceedings,” says Mr Dingaan Moagi, a senior clerk at Ruan Vorster Attorneys in Tzaneen.

Moagi said he started working for the company when it was still known as Eduard de Beer Attorneys. The name later changed to Vezi and De Beer Incorporated. It was only in 2012, that the current owner, Mr Ruan Vorster, bought the practice and changed the name to Ruan Vorster Attorneys.

Moagi said he started as a messenger and currently holds the title of filing clerk. He said he has worked very well with the different bosses he had over the years. “I have learnt so much about the law and its proceedings, I think I know more than some attorneys,” he joked.

Moagi said he is too old to study law, but finds it very interesting. “I think the law in SA is working very well.” He travels close to an hour every day to and from his home in Bodupe-Modjadji.

He further likes his job at the firm because he finds it easy to do and he can provide for his family of six — and also provide for his children to attend school.

Clean buy of the week

The doctors of Van Velden Hospital received a beautiful new building that was prefabricated in Gauteng, brought to Tzaneen on two trucks and put together on site at Van Velden Hospital by the skillful building team of Kwikspace Modular Buildings.

The purchase of the building was possible due to the great generosity of the Discovery Foundation, which awarded Dr Lydia Myburgh with the Discovery Foundation Rural Fellowship Award in the category Institutional Award on behalf of Van Velden Hospital for 2012 and again 2013.

Dr John Myburgh was crucially involved in the establishment of the building with

Lovely new Doctors’ Centre for Van Veldencomprehensive research, also involving construction draft plans for the building from Andrew Lindt, Archidraught, Architectural Design Studio, Tzaneen.

A beautiful entrance roof was added by Metal Worx, situated at Alon Farm, Modjadjiskloof.

The building is used for continuous medical education, serves as an office in the day with a call room for the doctor on call and a kitchen facility. The building offers space to facilitate courses and conferences for groups up to twenty to thirty persons with beautiful boardroom tables from the Carpentry of Alon Farm, Modjadjiskloof, new chairs from Orange Sky Marketing, Gauteng, and smart couches from Fabric Magic, Tzaneen.

The doctors from Van Velden Hospital express their greatest thanks to the Discovery Health Foundation and also to Mr Jan Tromp, Trustee of the NGO Call of Africa Foundation, Tzaneen, that acts as a mediator to facilitate the fine details of the project since August 2012, as well as his colleagues.

The establishment of the centre continues thanks to the great generosity of the Discovery Foudation, now concentrating on the most recent updates in medicine to provide excellent service delivery for our community and inspiration and encouragement for other hospitals in this area.

The photos on the right of the report about Van Velden’s new facility show the new prefabrica-ted office under the trees (top), in the center the arrival of the first truck with the basic construction can be seen and the bottom photo shows dr John Myburgh (left) watching the truck ma-nouvre into the right spot for the new

office to be off-loaded.

Big gap filled

“What they’re saying here sounds like taking your car for a service and they tell you that your car is beyond repair, you must take it home and work on it there,” said Mr Dennis Maselesele, who was told to take his 75-year-old mother home while she was still very ill.

It happened at Nkhensani Hospital in Giyani. Maselesele said his mother’s health had not improved when they told him to take her home. “It was like being told that her condition is beyond medical care and that we should take her home to die,” he said.

The pensioner, Ms Mthavini Mthombeni, was suffering from bowel incontinence. As a result, she is using adult nappies that need to be changed, a task which the hospital apparently failed to execute properly.

“On my visits I found her in a shocking state,” said her daughter, Ms Miyelani Mthombeni. “Once she was left in the same condition for about two days before she was cared for. When I complained, the matron apologised for the ‘mistake’.”

The patient’s husband, Mr Willy Mthombeni, said the family had complained to the hos-pital manager. They de-manded to know why she was discharged when a female doctor told them that she had been re-admitted.

When asked what determined the de-cision by doctors to discharge a person, the acting spokesman for the department of health, Mr Max Lu-sufi, said it was done through the recom-mendation of the technical team that worked closely with the patient. He add-ed that “it does not mean that a patient was completely cured when discharged.”

“Patients are dis-charged on the as-sumption that with treatment they would be able to heal in time because hospitals also have overcrowding to consider,” he said.

Your disease is beyond ‘repair’

The Plasies held their annual “big brag” for the athletic and singing teams, pre-ceding the interhigh.

This year festivities were in the form of a colour festival.

Hundreds of Plasies flocked to the soc-cer field, and released thousands of packets of powdered paint into the air and experienced an ex-plosion of colour like never before. Multi-coloured Plasies bounced up and down to the beat until sunset.

The traditional burning of the Merensky “M” was a spectacular sight.

The evening was ended by sing-

ing “Merensky in union”, which brought a few tears to the eyes of the matrics, as it was another beautiful memory to add to their last year at Merensky High.

The Limpopo Department of Corporative Govern-ance and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) warned that zero tolerance will be shown for people who oper-ate illegal initiation schools in the province.

The department has announced that the initiation school season is scheduled to commence on 20 June until 18 July. According to the spokesman for the department, Mr Motupa Selomo, the closing date for submission of applications to conduct initiation schools for this year is today.

He said the House of Traditional Leaders of SA in Limpopo will conduct a workshop for all senior traditional leaders who qualify for initiation school permits. The purpose of the workshop will be to brief and prepare the initiation schools’ stakehold-ers on precautionary measures to be followed, in order to have a smooth process during the initiation period. The workshop will be held on 18 March.

“We call upon parents to verify the legitimacy of initiation schools with their respective tradition-al authorities, to prevent their children from be-ing abducted by those operating bogus initiation schools,” Selomo said.

Slomo also said that no traditional surgeon or any other person is allowed to perform rituals in an in-itiation school without a certificate of fitness issued for that purpose by a registered medical practition-er authorized by the premier or authorized officer to do so. He further explained that no traditional nurse or any other person is allowed to look after initiates in an initiation school without a certificate of attendance of training.

Apart from these rules there are various other pre-cautionary measures to be taken.

inter-Letaba-atletiek-byeenkoms in Hoed-spruit. Sy was ook die byeenkoms se beste

hekkiesatleet.

Haar perd

se naam is Savuka.

rekord verbeter.

Giyani Hot Spurs is inching closer in the SAFA Second Division League after winning 3-1 against Modimolle Aces in a match played at Giyani stadium on Saturday. Depending on how the other teams will play, the win could see Hot Spurs push through from position three which they were in before the Saturday match, to position two in the much contested league. Hot Spurs started the match on a high note and could have opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute, but missed several chances served to them on a plate by the visitors.

The owner of Modimolle Aces, Lolo Selamolela, said they battled due to the

formation that they were using in the first half. “We changed from a 4-5-1 to 3-5-2 formation, but unfortunately we were too late because Hot Spurs had already scored two goals against us,” he said. Hot Spurs has its goalkeeper, Shikombelo Nghonyama, to thank for frustrating most of the attempts by Modimolle Aces’ strikers. Asked about the sudden lapse in Hot Spurs’ play during the last minutes of the second half, their coach, Fannie Bilankulu, attributed it to the substitution of their captain Oska “Page” Mathebula, who sustained an injury. “Page’s substitution spoiled the whole game; we started to panic and lost touch. This was

more so because his sub had never had a chance of a fulltime game,” he said.

Meanwhile for Hot Spurs, this was the sixth win in seven matches that they have played so far since the beginning of the year. Their new coach looks determined to steer Hot Spurs’ ship through to the National First Division League, a dream that the players and Hot Spurs’ fans in Giyani have been hoping to achieve for some time now.

Bulletin

“I’ll rather go to war with an army of sheep led by a lion, than an army of lions led by a sheep.” — Alexander die Grote

Sprokie van ‘n Boskind!

Athletes can look forward to an exciting and unique event on Saturday 5 April, when the Tzaneen Running Club will host the Aida Lowveld 4 in 1 Tuffy. The name of the event originates from the toughness of the event, as the hills of Agatha are sure to test the fitness levels and character of all participants.

The club announced that Aida Lowveld Estate Agency (Tzaneen, Phalaborwa & Hoedspruit) is the main sponsor of the event, which will start and finish at Coach House Hotel & Spa. Participants may use the facilities of Coach House Hotel & Spa.

There will be a 42,2 km, 21,2 km, 10 km, 5 km fun run and a business relay challenge. As the event is set in Agatha, some of the breathtaking views that the runners will encounter are sure to add some energy to tiring legs. The starting time for the 42,2 km race is 06:00 and the rest of the events will start with ten minute intervals. Each runner completing the event will receive a uniquely designed medal.

The business relay challenge is an exciting event. Any business, school, church or social

community group can participate and teams of four members will participate in a relay format. Each member of a team will run, walk, stroll or crawl a distance of 2,5 km. The entry fee per team is R400 and all the proceeds will be donated to organizations that care for children in need. Each member of a team completing the relay will also receive a uniquely designed medal.

The purpose of this event is primarily to raise funds for children in need, but it will also offer businesses an opportunity to interact in a social and relaxed environment. Food and extremely cold beverages will be on offer and great prizes will be won by luck competitors.

Entry forms for the event are available at Aida Lowveld, Van Heerden’s Pharmacy, Gym @ Ben Vorster and Trophy Toyota. Pre-entries at Aida Lowveld, 38 Boundary Street, Tzaneen, on Friday 4 April from 13:00 to 18:00 and at Coach House from 05:00 on the morning of the event.

Info: Johan Thiart (083 2702 416) and Wicus van Vuuren (083 3910 172).

“Tuff” challenge awaiting runners

Hot Spurs player Lesly Malungani (green Jersey) tries to dribble past Modimolle Aces’ striker Palaki Mashibane.

Aces steps into Spurs’ hot pot

Three horsemen from Merensky High School, together with thirty other riders, participated in the Western Mounted Games held in Bela-Bela. Anri Janse van Rensburg, Genevieve van der Merwe and Theo van der Merwe performed very well. In this competition horse and rider compete as a team, executing a variety of games including a quadrangle, biangle, speedball and speedbarrels. When the last game took place, it started raining therefore all riders had only

one chance to complete the challenge. All Merensky’s riders rose to the occasion, and successfully completed the games. In the SANESA Schools Division Level 4, Genevieve was placed first, with Anri coming in second and Theo taking a third place. In the Open division Level 2, Anri was placed third overall, and Genevieve fourth. Both riders thereby qualified for Level 3 in the next competition which will also be

staged in Bela-Bela later this year.

No horsing around!
