WEVE COME THIS FAR BY FAITH

    Refrain

Weve come this far by faith, leaning on

the Lord; Trusng in His holy word, Hes

never failed me yet. Oh cant turn around,

weve come this far by faith.

    Verse 1

Dont be discouraged when troubles in

your life, Hell bear your burdens and moveall misery and strife. Thats why weve

    come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord;

Trusng in His holy word, Hes never failed

me yet. Oh cant turn around, weve come

    this far by faith.

    Verse 2

Just the other day I heard someone say

he didnt believe in Gods word; But I can

truly say that God had made a way, and

Hes never failed me yet. Thats why weve

come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord;Trusng in His holy word, Hes never failed

me yet. Oh cant turn around, weve come

    this far by faith.

    About Todays Hymn

Weve Come This Far By Faith was writ-

ten by Albert A. Goodson. This hymn

became a meless and meaningful hymn,

because it was born from a dark period in

his life. While living in Chicago, alone and

depressed, Goodson wrote this hymn. As

he played the piano, the Lord seemed to

speak saying, I have never failed you -- you

have come this far by faith. Later that day,

while walking in Chicago, he met a man

who told him he did not believe in GodsWord. When he returned home, he called

noted musician Thurstan Frazier, who lis-

tened to this hymn and recommended he

changed the tle to Weve Come This Far

By Faith. The rest is history.

    EXODUS 5:1-23 (NIV)

1Aerward Moses and Aaron went to Pha-

raoh and said, This is what the Lord, the God of Is-

rael, says: Let my people go, so that they may holda fesval to me in the desert. 2Pharaoh said, Who

is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go?

I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.3Then they said, The God of the Hebrews has met

with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the

desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he

may strike us with plagues or with the sword.4But the king of Egypt said, Moses and Aar-

on, why are you taking the people away from their

labor? Get back to your work! 5Then Pharaoh said,

Look, the people of the land are now numerous,

and you are stopping them from working. 6That

same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave driv-

ers and foremen in charge of the people: 7You are

no longer to supply the people with straw for making

bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. 8But

require them to make the same number of bricks as

before; don't reduce the quota. They are lazy; that

is why they are crying out, Let us go and sacrifice toour God.

9Make the work harder for the men so that

they keep working and pay no aenon to lies.10Then the slave drivers and the foremen went out

and said to the people, This is what Pharaoh says: I

will not give you any more straw. 11Go and get your

own straw wherever you can find it, but your work

    Unison Scripture

will not be reduced at all. 12So the people scat-

tered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for

straw. 13The slave drivers kept pressing them, say-

ing, Complete the work required of you for each

day, just as when you had straw. 14The Israelite

foremen appointed by Pharaoh's slave drivers

were beaten and were asked, Why didn't youmeet your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as

before? 15Then the Israelite foremen went and

appealed to Pharaoh: Why have you treated

your servants this way?16Your servants are given no straw, yet

we are told, Make bricks! Your servants arebeing beaten, but the fault is with your own

people. 17Pharaoh said, Lazy, that's what you

arelazy! That is why you keep saying, Let us go

and sacrifice to the Lord. 18Now get to work. You

will not be given any straw, yet you must produce

your full quota of bricks. 19The Israelite foremen

realized they were in trouble when they were

told, You are not to reduce the number of bricks

required of you for each day.20When they le Pharaoh, they found

Moses and Aaron waing to meet them, 21and

they said, May the Lord look upon you and judge

you! You have made us a stench to Pharaoh and

his offi cials and have put a sword in their hand

to kill us. 22Moses returned to the Lord and said,

O Lord, why have you brought trouble upon this

people? Is this why you sent me? 23Ever since I

went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has

brought trouble upon this people, and you havenot rescued your people at all.

Almighty and Most Merciful Father, wecome before You, acknowledging our

sins, our shortcomings, and our breaking of

    our Covenant with You.

Not only have we done things we ought

not have done, said things we ought not tohave said, le undone so many things we

ought to have done and been silent when

we should have witnessed for You.

Not only are we guilty of that, O Lord; but

we have also closed our eyes and pretend-ed not to see the injusces, the racism, and

the evil which pervade our everyday lives.

We have shut our ears and pretended

not to hear the cries for liberaon which

come from the lips, lives and hearts of the

opressed even our own Black brothers

    and sisters!

Forgive us, O Lord, renew our courage and

faith, and keep us ever mindful of Thy great

sacrifice. Hear us, we beseech Thee, as

we come to You in love and worship giving

    Your name the praise forevermore.

An excerpt ofGuns in Americaby Kevin Powell

Annie Chrisan was a (woman) always looking for

some funbeing good was such a bore,

    so she bought a gun

she killed John Lennon, shot him down cold

she tried to kill Reagan, everybody say gun control.

    Prince, Annie Chrisan (1981)

a prayer vigil/press conference at Brookdale

Hospital to pray for the 16 year old girl that was

shot point blank in the face. The Saturday, January

15th shoong took place on Belmont and Sackmanin Brownsville, Brooklyn.

    Email posted by Brooklyn clergy/community

    leaders (2011)

Prince, the musical genius and icon, was

singing about an American mindset of 30 long years

ago, one that is very alive today. And, obviously, far more males than females engage in gunplay

as evidenced by who shot John Lennon, President

    Ronald Reagan, and Congresswoman Gabrielle

Giffords. Regardless of the metaphors, we should

    heed Princes point.

And the Brooklyn girl referenced above is

Kervina Ervin, who was in crical condion but has

progressed enough that she will now have surgery on

her mouth, since it was badly damaged by the bullet.

There has been much speculaon on why Kervina

was shot (Was it gang-related? Was it revenge for

some prior street fight?). But what is clear is that

Kervina is, symbolically, millions of miles away from

Tucson, Arizona, and the naonal outpouring of

grief (well-deserved) that has accompanied the day-to-day vigil for Congresswoman Giffords.

For sure, Kervina Ervins life is as valuable

as the Congresswomans. Yet we would not know

that because there has been no presidenal visit

to Brownsville, one of the poorest communies in

America, and a hood whose pockmarked skies are

oen liered with the pop pop pop of bullets.

as we debate guns, gun control, and what

happened, precisely, in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday,

January 8th, and who, exactly, is responsible, I think

it me we cease poinng fingers at each other

and take a good look in the mirror at ourselves.America needs to be completely transparent about

the fact that we have a profound and dysfunconal

relaonship with guns, that we are literally blowing

each other away, and few seem genuine in their

desire to stop the bloodshed for good.

Just this past weekend we had the shoong

outside a Washington State Wal-Mart that le twodead and two Sheriffs depues wounded. Both

the shooter and a teenaged girl police believe was

somehow connected to the suspect were killed. In

Detroit, a lone gunman was brazen enough to walk

into a police precinct, opened fire, and wounded

four offi cers before return gunfire took his life.

Why? Because we are a violent naon,

a naon that was founded on violence. Just ask

Nave Americans, Black Americans who had to trek

through slavery and segregaon, poor and or ethnic

Whites, Mexicans, women, the LGBT community, or

any other group in our lengthy and hecc history

who have had to deal with guns being aimed in their

direcon. No queson that we are a naon that

has oen seled scores, in our wars, in our movies,in our video games, and, no doubt, in our polical

gripes, with gunplay. Or with talk or boasts ofgunplay. Pump that, like a drug, into the minds and

veins of any people enough, and add anger, rage,

alienaon, or, yes, emoonal instability or mental

illness, and youve got a recipe for American tragedy

    aer American tragedy.

That said, the great misfortune to me is not

simply Tucson, Arizona, bu the greater misfortunesare the ignored, forgoen, or anonymous

individuals, like Kervina Ervin, who wonder, each

and every single day of their lives, if they will catch a

bullet, just because they live in a community where

guns are so easy to obtain. And the stories go on and

    on

That is why stats like these are so staggering:

Since 1968, when Dr. King and Robert F.

Kennedy were murdered, with guns, over a

million Americans have been killed, with guns

In any given year there are over 9000 gun-

related murders in America. In developed

naons like England there is 39 per year, or just

17 in Finland in any given year Murder rates due to guns in America are 6.9

mes the rates in 22 other heavily populated

    and high-income countries combined

Medical costs and costs to the criminal jusce

system, in America, plus all the security

precauons (think of metal detectors at airports,

at schools, and elsewhere) wind up cosng us,as taxpayers, over $100 billion per year

What we are discussing, then, is a naonal crisis

that must become a naonal priority and a naonal

conversaon, led by our president, Barack Obama.

    Acons we must take:

Mr. Obama should start by urging passage of a

bill, H.R. 308, to ban large capacity ammunion

magazines, an important life-saving measurenow before Congress.

We need to challenge our elected offi cials to

put more meat on the Brady Bill, signed into law

by President Clinton in the 1990s; Cies, towns,

states, and the naonal government have got

to work together to make it much more diffi cult

to get a gun Weve got to fix the background check system

immediately, create a naonal formula for that,

and make all records available of anyone who

wants to purchase a gun, including medical and

criminal records, or any reports from a school

    or workplace of unstable behavior

And those loopholes that make it so easy to get

a gun without any check whatsoever must be

    closed.

What kind of naon are we that a teenager, or even

younger, can get a gun from someone, and use it

for deadly purposes, as if he, or she, were playing a

    video game for fun?

We need is a culture of nonviolence, onewhere, again, it becomes a naonal priority right

in pre-school or grade school, to teach our children

the lessons of Gandhi, of Dr. King, of anyone who

is raonale enough to understand violence in any

form, or the ready availability of guns, is simply not

acceptable for a society that calls itself civilized.

If we are going to talk about guns andgun violence, the naonal conversaon must be

from every single angle. Each one of us must ask

ourselves why is it okay to reside in a culture where

violent blockbuster movies rule our theaters, why

television habitually features gunplay, why historical

tales weve digested since childhood have always

featured weapons and violence, and why it is okay

for our children, or us, too, to play video games that

showcase violent imagery that feed our seemingly

insaable appetes for murder and mayhem, even

    if it is ficonalized?

This is the only way we as a naon will turn

this corner, if we are totally real with ourselves, and

are willing to steer the DNA of our culture in a new

direcon. And as Marn Luther King III said earlier

today, at a press conference with New York CityMayor Michael Bloomberg in response to the crisis

    of guns in America,

We are a much beer naon than the

    behavior exhibited.

And way past me for us to show it. For our

children. And our childrens children, too

    Family,

There are those who talk and those who do. Please take a moment to say a prayer of thanksgiving

for Sister Marjorie Flowers and our late Brother, Deacon Tyron Smith, for their service to Christ through their

acons, helping to rebuild the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, one home, one family at a me.

The Message translaon of James 2:19-20 warns, "Do I hear you professing to believe in the one

and only God, but then observe you complacently si ng back as if you had done something wonderful?

That's just great. Demons do that, but what good does it do them? Use your heads! Do you suppose for a

minute that you can cut faith and works in two and not end up with a corpse on your hands?"

We should all take heed of this scripture and the examples of Marjorie and Tyron, and endeavor to

put our hands and minds to work on the many injusces that surround us.

As Marjorie connues this work over the next year, honoring Tyrons dedicaon with her own, keep

    her in your prayers.

Asking you to Imagine . . . what great things we could accomplish if everyone did their part.Rev. Os Moss III

    Pound Foolish

    By Sandy Sorensen

When I think about the U.S. House of Rep-

resentaves plan to cut $100 billion in

    non-defense discreonary federal spend-

ing over the next seven months, I am reminded of

the old adversing slogan, You can pay me now,

or you can pay me later. Cu ng federal spending

and reducing debt might sound good at face value,

but we would do well to consider carefully the

longer-term consequences and costs. And some

of those costs might be diffi cult to calculate with

numbers alone. The budget proposal would mean cu ng

most federal programs by 30 percent, including

programs like Head Start, energy conservaon for

    low-income communies, food safety inspecon,

    transportaon infrastructure improvements, veter-

ans assistance, and key social safety net programs

like food stamps and unemployment benefits thathave kept millions more Americans from falling into

poverty in the midst of economic recession.

Hard hit would be state budgets, many of

which are already facing severe budget crises, and

which stand to face reducons in federal govern-

ment grants and support. Take the state of Ari-

zona. Facing a $1.1 billion shorall, Governor Jan

Brewers budget proposal would cut nearly 280,000from the states Medicaid program, including

thousands with mental illness or disability. Mental

health advocates fear that such cuts would mean

reducing already overburdened services for those

with mental illness. This is an especially sobering

scenario in the wake of the tragic shoong outside

a Tucson Safeway store on January 8th that killedsix people and wounded 14 others, including Rep.

Gabrielle Giffords. Invesgaons into that aack

show mounng evidence that the alleged gunman

demonstrated signs of mental instability and did

not appear to be receiving mental health care.

During last weeks State of the Union address,

members of Congress broke with the tradion of

si ng by party affi liaon and instead, Republicans

and Democrats sat side by side to symbolize the

need to reach across our differences and come

together to face the challenges before our naon

and the world. But it will be nothing more than anempty gesture if our public policy decisions do not

reflect a similar commitment to the common good,

or what the preamble to the U.S. Constuon calls

    the general welfare.

In his speech to the naon following the

tragedy in Tucson, President Obama called upon

all of us to expand our moral imaginaons. If everthere was a me for moral imaginaon, it is now.

It is all too easy to imagine individual interests and

quick fixes. It is all too easy to pretend we may not

be affected by distant budget cuts to distant social

programs that seem to have no relaon to our own

lives. But Marn Luther King, Jr. had it right: we are

all caught in an inescapable network of mutual-

ity. When some of us are le behind, all of us fallbehind.

The United Church of Christ has more than 5,300 churches

throughout the United States. Rooted in the Chrisan tradions

of congregaonal governance and covenantal relaonships,

each UCC se ng speaks only for itself and not on behalf of every

UCC congregaon. UCC members and churches are free to differ

on important social issues, even as the UCC remains principallycommied to unity in the midst of our diversity.

THE RESULTS OF A REDEEMED LIFE

    WALKING WITH GRACE

"Ask and you shall receive." Do you believe it? There are those who will answer a flat "no"; that

it's impossible to prove God rewards us or answers our prayers. Too many prayers, they say, go

unanswered, while rewards can usually be aributed to hard work or blind luck.

    Others are doubul, skepcal. They've prayed for pay raises, improved health, a happy marriage;

some of their prayers are answered and some are not. They picture a God of moods who reacts

as inconsistently as most parents do with their children.

Both the disbeliever and the confused skepc fail to consider one all important element in a

working relaonship with God: Faith. It is obvious, too, that neither has honestly tried God's gen-

erosity by pu ng God first in their lives, by giving their complete, "no excepons" trust.

The a tude you develop is all the reward you'll need, the certainty that God won't fail you and

the realizaon that your role in life, your place in God's plan, is as important to God as anyone.

Put your trust in and prove it by giving of yourself to God and to others, and no force on earth

can turn you from happiness. Think not of receiving, but of giving. Think not of having, but being

made a living example of God's grace. Only then, can you honestly say you have God's generos-

    ity.

    BE SAFE IN YOUR HOME

You can face safety risks if you are unable to pay your home energy bills. Some people resort

to unsafe methods to keep their homes warm or cool. These include the use of fireplaces,

IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY YOUR HOME ENERGY BILL, YOUR HOME MAY NOT BE SAFE,

AND YOU MAY BE AT RISK OF SERIOUS ILLNESS OR INJURY.

THE LOW INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LIHEAP) MAY BE ABLE TO HELPKEEP YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE AND HEALTHY.

WE GOT NEXT: Celebrang the joys and sacrifices of the past and securing the future ofour Nextgeneraon to take our community to the Nextlevel.

    Levicus 25:1 - 13 (NIV), Luke 4:18 - 19 (KJV)

January Levicus: 25:1010Consecrate the fiieth year and proclaim

liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.

It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to

return to your family property and to your own

    clan.

February: Levicus 25:11The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai,

March Levicus 25:22Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When

you enter the land I am going to give you, theland itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD.

April Levicus 25:33For six years sow your fields, and for six years

prune your vineyards and gather their crops.

    May Levicus 25:4-5

4But in the seventh year the land is to have ayear of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do

not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.5Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the

grapes of your untended vines. The land is to

    have a year of rest.

June Luke 4:18-1918The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he

hath anointed me to preach the gospel

to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-

hearted, to preach deliverance to the capves,

and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at

liberty them that are bruised, 19To preach the

    acceptable year of the Lord.

July Levicus 25:6-76Whatever the land yields during the sabbath

year will be food for youfor yourself, your

male and female servants, and the hired worker

and temporary resident who live among you, 7

as well as for your livestock and the wild animalsin your land. Whatever the land produces may

    be eaten.

the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day

of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout

    your land.

October Levicus: 25:11-1211The fiieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do

not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or

harvest the untended vines. 12 For it is a jubilee

and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken

    directly from the fields.

November Levicus 25:1313In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return to

    their own property.
