The senior grades have started their seasons well with the A Grade being undefeated after 6 games,

the Seconds also undefeated and the under 18s with only 1 loss. All coaches are pleased with their

starts to the season and the depth within the club at this stage. Keep a look out for events happening

in the next month including the big match against Sollies this Saturday, the Ladies night this

Saturday, the Friday membership draw up to $400 and the Players draw sponsored by Emma‟s Deli on

Saturday night up to $350. The players draw is for every registered player from Under 9s to A

Grade and you have to be there to collect the prize.

Other events in June include the Family day on the Sunday 17th June sponsored by new Sponsor

Senvion who has come on board this year. Memberships are going well but if you are not a member we

would love to have you on board.

FROM THE PRES.

It was great to see Midge Johnson back at our club for our round four clash against his beloved Port

Bulldogs. You may recall Midge had an unfortunate health issue at the club and part of his return was

spent catching up with and personally thanking club members who played a huge part in his survival.

Unfortunately the annual SGL v Whyalla FL interleague match set for June long week-end has been

cancelled at the WFL request. Football at this level should be the aim of all players but it appears

that is not the case in Whyalla.

Club membership is growing but we still need more of you to sign up (family

($35)/single($25)/pensioner). All senior players (over 18) are required to do this and all junior

players should be part of a family membership.

I would like to acknowledge more of those club members living up to the theme from the 2018

Volunteer Week “Give a Little..Change a Lot”. Firstly, Mitchell Barnett, Heath Green and Jack

Franklin for boundary umpiring U18 games at short notice. Secondly, the six who helped the PA

Special School coaching clinic (separate entry below). Thirdly, the ten who helped move some rocks in

honour of the late great SAFC member Doctor Alistair Miller (separate entry below for explanation).

Fourthly the U18/U15 players who took on water boy duties in round six to allow some of the usual

suspects to enjoy the Player`s Reunion that was happening on the other side of the boundary. I

continue to ask you to consider what role you could play in YOUR club to help spread the load. Just

ask!

This weekend Zack McEwan, Coen Davis, Matt Millard and Jake Wilson also agreed to be volunteer

umpires/water boys at short notice, many thanks. Mick

Great to see South has developed a link with Magpies Netball club and after every match we now

have the Magpies draw where a sizeable voucher can be won.

FOOTBALL COMMITTEE

Good start to the season and there have been many players in good form this year including in the A

Grade those who have been mentioned in the best 5 players for the team in Sportingpulse include

Aziel Stuart, Clayton Milera, Matt Downey, Craig Shirley, Marcus Kerin , Kriston Thomspon and Sam

Maule. Lionel Brown has kicked 36 goals to lead the goalkicking for the year so far. In the B Grade

best players include Daniel Dohnt, Jack Magarey, Jake Collins, Rowan Frick, and Marcus Gill with over

20 goals for the year

The Under 18s are in 2nd spot on the ladder and have lost only one game and are much improved this

year, best players include Mitchell French, Zane Sard, Will Waterworth, Joel Sullivan, Stefan Horner

and Kareem Aitken. Connor McMillan and Kallan Warren have been great contributors in the forward

lines with Connor having over 23 goals.

The under 15s are in 4th spot on the ladder with those mentioned in the best players so far this year

include Drew Morgan, Ethan Mundy, Heath Green, Michael Collins, Isaac Keeler and Ethan Reid .

Coach Cameron has been hit hard by injuries but the lads are trying hard this year in the competitive

SGL competition.

The under 13s are in 4th spot with the best players mentioned this year including Tyson Darley,

Hudson Brazel, Sam Chamberlain, Jack Franklin, Edward Hannes, Logan Tuip and Jeff Fischer kicking

over 9 goals.

In the Under 11s it is only early on the season and those who have impressed include Oscar Williams,

Ryleigh Whitehead, James Heritage, Leo McInnis, Hamish Blinman and William Waye.

In the Under 9 the coaches have realised that after our first two games this season they had good

numbers and were finding it hard to manage the game and give all players a fair and equal run.

They decided to run two sides so all players get a full game each week and it will eliminate the bye.

They have requested that for this to be successful they need help from parents on game day and for

all the players to turn up every week. Dean and Chris think that this will help the development of

players and keep them interested and they will be making the sides as even as possible. They will let

everyone know at training regarding what will be happening.

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION WEEKEND

Our annual Volunteer Recognition Weekend was held 2 weeks ago and it was a great initiative to thank

those who have built and continue to build our great 106 year old club

INDIGENOUS GUERNSEY 2

SGL has programmed a Multicultural Round (thanks to our 2017 initiative) in Round 12 on Saturday

21st July (v Solomontown in Port Pirie). The Guernsey design is under production thanks to Laverne

Ngatokorua and Bradley Amos and is kindly sponsored by Senvion (specialists in wind energy

solutions). Thanks to Mark Whitehead for pursuing this generous sponsorship. As we will be playing in

Page 4: BULLDOG BULLETIN MAY 2018communitywebs.org/safc/assets/bulldog-bulletin-may-2018.pdf · FROM THE PRES. It was great to see Midge Johnson back at our club for our round four clash

Port Pirie we will have a Guernsey presentation and possible auction the night before (Friday 20th

July) and a function at the club after returning from Port Pirie. We would like to see lots turn up for

this now annual event.

AUSTRALIAN DRUG FOUNDATION VISIT

We were proud to host the ADF when they presented a Drug and Alcohol Seminar on Monday 14 May.

The aim was to gain guidance and produce a club drug policy and have it in place when/if drug issues

arise in the club.

PORT AUGUSTA SPECIAL SCHOOL COACHING CLINIC

One of the most rewarding SAFC initiatives of 2017 was the hosting of two coaching clinics for the

students from the PA Special School. This continued last week and was once again a huge success.

Thanks to David Williams, Angus and Kelvin McInnis, Cameron Reid, Frank and Josh Tuip and two of

Frank`s WAFC grandsons Cody and Jackson Tuip.

MAC SEMINAR

Major sponsors of SA football (The Motor Accident Commission) will hold their annual seminar at our

club on Thursday 14 June. We need as many people as possible to attend this as we will gain

financially if a certain number attend. All players are asked to attend after training concludes.

DR. ALISTAIR MILLER MEMORIAL

Many connected to SAFC and cricket club (not to mention the RFDS) will fondly remember Dr Alistair

Miller on the sidelines for many footy games, cricket scorer, digging through Wisden to find the

correct rule for cricket dismissals or coaching the junior cricket Premiership . At the request of his

long-time colleague (Dr Ash Thomas), Jenny, Adam and Gundle Grantham plus Andrew and Sue

Magarey plus Judith and Yukka Barnett plus Mary, Robbie and Patty Miller assembled at the Old Base

clinic. The call had gone out to help move some huge rocks from A to B to mount a monument to

Alistair. Naturally with such dedicated SAFC people the mission was successfully accomplished and

we felt honoured to be asked. Many thanks to all involved. If you get a chance please read the plaque

we left mounted at the clinic car-park exit.

WHITE RIBBON ROUND

As a progressive community minded club, we are proud to be approached by the White Ribbon

organization to see if a White Ribbon Round can be included sometime this season. I have approached

the SGL to achieve this and await their support. (White Ribbon supports the elimination of violence

towards women).

SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT MAY 2018

entertainment and social events to our club. Keep an eye out for the posters and flyers that are

promoting these shows and support the club by joining in the fun.

those ladies who came to enjoy the amazing grazing table, drinks and great company!

some of the senior players. Tickets are available behind the bar. Always a good night out with music,

Family Fun Day is aimed at bringing a “kid friendly” event to our members. There will be jumping

castles, face painting, bbq, games, races, hot donuts, soup, fairy floss & stalls. Ignite Cheer & Dance

will feature at 12noon with an exhibition. The Colts Committee will be having a cake stall with all

or Robert Bowman email: [email protected]

SAFC Social Committee thank you for your ongoing support.

2018 SOUTH AUGUSTA GOLF DAY

The day was off to a late start thanks to the A grade coach telling a number of players the Golf Day

started at 10:30 rather than the 10am on all of the promotional material. Once the stragglers finally

made it we ended up having 27 players who were all treated to excellent weather for the 5th year

running.

Page 6: BULLDOG BULLETIN MAY 2018communitywebs.org/safc/assets/bulldog-bulletin-may-2018.pdf · FROM THE PRES. It was great to see Midge Johnson back at our club for our round four clash

The early pace was set by the Brusnahan Clan who started like a house on fire thanks to Uncle, Mark,

who took out the long drive competition but things started to unravel in the back part of the 9 as the

drinks cart was making regular trips around. Chris Heron took out the closest to the pin on number 2,

with no one able to hit the green all day except for Chris. For the record Bolsey reckons even he has

not knocked one as close as Chris' ball with it falling only a foot short of a hole in one. Thankyou to

Mark Sellar who donated his product, Shader, for winners of the Long Drive and Closest to the Pin.

The Red Jacket and Terry Gardiners Meat packs were once again won by the team consisting of Liam

Bury, Adam Grantham, Sam Maule and Daniel Dohnt. Next year the boys said they would play

opposite hand to give everyone else a chance. Lastly thanks to Trish Waterworth and Judith Barnett

who organised the roast lunch up at the footy club. Hope to see everyone out in 2019. Jake C.

BILL APPLEBEES 90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

(Article from the Trans) Donning his red and white polo

shirt, Bill Applebee made his way to the middle of Central

Oval on Saturday afternoon, April 21, to mark his

90th birthday with an unforgettable memory. As his family

watched on proudly, the dyed-in-the-wool Bulldog tossed

the coin for the 2018 Spencer Gulf Football League season

opening tie between South Augusta and West Augusta.

South rewarded the long-time member with a massive 114-

point victory as they begin their quest for three

consecutive premierships.

Bill, who received life membership almost 60 years ago, said

it was very nice to get the opportunity to toss the coin on

his birthday weekend. “It was a very good day,” he said.

“We (South) lost the toss but we won the game."

When his father – who also went on to become a South Augusta Football Club life member – took a

job on the railway lines, Bill decided to join up to a local football team. Bill first became affiliated

Page 7: BULLDOG BULLETIN MAY 2018communitywebs.org/safc/assets/bulldog-bulletin-may-2018.pdf · FROM THE PRES. It was great to see Midge Johnson back at our club for our round four clash

with South Augusta as a teenager in 1945, beginning a lifelong affection for the Bulldogs. He soon

tasted success on the field, winning the B Grade premiership in 1948.

After representing South‟s A and B Grade sides during his 15-year playing career, Bill decided to

hang up the boots before becoming club trainer – a role which he upheld for two decades. During his

time with the club, Bill has been heavily involved in volunteering, assisting in the construction of club

rooms. Bill, who goes to the club rooms every Friday night and attends most home games, said

volunteering only requires time and love. “You put your life into sport. You make a lot of friends and

it‟s terrific to be involved,” he said. “You don‟t have to know a trade to be a volunteer. You come in

and learn things as you go, which is good.”

Having witnessed the club go from strength to strength, Bill said simply being a „Southie‟ has been

the highlight of his 73-year involvement. Bill celebrated his birthday on Sunday, April 22 surrounded

by family and friends at The Pastoral Hotel. (Transcontinental)

FOOTBALL FLASHBACK: 1938 (80 YEARS AGO) Position 1st

South wins the Premiership to take the total for the club to three premierships. Best players for

South in the Grand final were Ted Curyer, who put in an outstanding game, with other great

contributors being B McGuffie, Fred Copley, H Burton, Rex Curyer and H Lawson. Goalkickers were: F

Raynor 3, B McGuffie 2, Eugene Barry, Ron Curyer and K Webb. South did not lose a game for the

whole season. Captain; Hube Zanker, Vice Captain Bert Lehmann. Club president; HT Luke, Club

officials were Dave Barry and Jack Shinnick. Trainers were A Holmes and J McGrath.

BILLYS CORNER

The club would like to offer its condolences to the families of Tim Reid, a great and well respected

Central Augusta cricketer who died recently. Tim„s son Jack played several seasons of cricket at

South‟s and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Condolences also to Trevor Harbridge on the recent death of his mother Lorraine, sympathies

to Leeann, Trevor, Sharon and family. Condolences also to the Parnanzini family of the death of

Mario Parnanzini, who was a regular face at club sponsor, Emma‟s Deli over many years.

Page 10: BULLDOG BULLETIN MAY 2018communitywebs.org/safc/assets/bulldog-bulletin-may-2018.pdf · FROM THE PRES. It was great to see Midge Johnson back at our club for our round four clash

Connor Rozee made his SANFL A Grade debut for the ladder leading

(long time since that could be said) North Adelaide Roosters recently.

He kindly chose Souths to receive the $500 paid to his club of origin.

He kicked 2 goals in each of his 2 league games so far and has

contributed well and last week he played in the State Under 18s side.

Another name in the State Under 18 side was McLennan and it‟s a good

chance it may be Madigan Medallist and A Grade Premiership player

Shaun McLennan‟s son who has been playing B Grade for Central

Districts. Keep a look out for North Melbourne‟s Jed Anderson who is

having a breakout year in the middle for the team this year. Jed is the

grandson of 1964 A Grade Premiership best on ground Jimmy Anderson, just ask Billy Baker about

him! Other sons of Southies doing well include Darren Shillabeer who is kicking goals in the Barossa

league and Max McLachlan who has started off well for North Cairns in the Cairns League.

Current committeeperson, Life member, ex- President and club stalwart Peter Huxtable has finally

finished his pet project after 20 years or more. Peter‟s book on the shacks was released a few weeks

ago is a comprehensive history of the origin of the shacks, its characters and stories. See Peter if

you wish to purchase a copy and Di is happy that he now has no excuse for doing the washing and

cooking now!

Couttsy just wasn‟t having a good day, not only did the Crows get beaten in the last minute against

Port Power when he travelled down there to watch the big game but his driver and mate Buck, decide

to play a trick on him and gave his the 2017 membership instead of 2018 when they went into the

game only to watch in glee from the other side of the turnstiles as Couttsy tried to convince the

gatekeeper that he needed to get into the game. Buck eventually came to the rescue.

The South Augusta Past Players and Officials day went well with all teams having convincing wins and

over 30 players getting under the Marquee to catch up. Amongst those who travelled on the day

include 1980s Secretary and Colts coach Brett Cummins who has recently retired as a teacher at

Kapunda, his daughter currently working at Port Augusta, Matt Phillis from Adelaide who played in

the 1998 Under 18s premiership and Joe Fuschtei, also from Adelaide who played in the 2008

Under18 premiership who was also there to watch his younger brother Ron play in the A Grade.

Gary Kernahan admitted that he may have taken a bit of glory off Chris Struck for being in the 1998

Under 18 Premiership picture as coach as Chris was coach most of the year and had to work away at

the end of the season. After 20 years everyone had forgotten that until now, Gary it was your moves

on the day that mattered!

Teammates from the 1993/1994 back to back Premiership recently all put in to purchase a wine

barrel with the list of players from both years with their playing numbers. The lads launched the

barrel with a few beers 2 weeks ago and will continue to support it into the future, I‟m sure. If you

would like to purchase a barrel of this year or another other year please Yucka Barnett. Cost $340.

One of those to contribute was 1993 Fullback Rod Leith who after a few years in NSW has returned

to the region and works at Whyalla. He hopes to attend a few more matches as he hasn‟t seen a live

match for 3 years. Good to see Rod and Bronwyn back and he also works with 2017 A Grade

premiership player Josh Ackland over there.

New Sponsors to the club in 2018

We are happy to announce 2 new sponsors to the club in 2018

Senvion has been over 26 years in the business and more than 7,800 wind turbine installations have

given Senvion one of the most renowned names in the industry.

They develop, produce and distribute wind turbines to suit almost any location and offer a complete

range of project specific solutions in areas such as foundation construction, transport and installation

as well as service and maintenance.

They have more than 4,500 employees worldwide and currently have a project in Port Augusta. The

Lincoln Gap Wind Farm is a 212MW wind farm project comprising 59 wind turbines and a 10MW grid

scale battery storage. The wind farm is located near Port Augusta in South Australia.

The first 35 turbines installed will deliver 126 megawatts of clean, renewable energy to Australian

consumers. This stage of the project will be operational by the end of 2018 and fully completed in

May 2019. When complete, the Lincoln Gap wind farm will produce enough energy to power 155,000

households in South Australia. The Lincoln Gap wind farm will feature the Senvion 3.6M140 EBC

turbine, which will be the first from Senvion's three-megawatt range to be installed in Australia.

Senvion have committed to sponsor the Indigenous Guernsey round, South Family Day and support

the Football Operations of the club particularly the junior grades. Many thanks to Senvion and Mark

Whitehead who was involved with the sponsorship agreement.

Anytime Fitness: Another new sponsor Anytime Fitness has agreed to sponsor the club with a $300

cash contribution plus 10 x1month Gift cards(Valued at $99 each) and the Corporate rate offer of

$11.95, $0 joining fee, No Contract to all players, Players family, coaching staff and members who

join the gym. This contribution takes then to a Gold Sponsorship status at the club and it‟s great to

have them on board and as a member please support their offer.

If your organisation choose to sponsor South‟s in 2018, the Management Committee will strongly

encourage our members to maintain their support for your business by advertising in the club,

mentions on Friday night and player awards, monthly newsletter and slide show on the big screen TV‟s

at the clubrooms.

A list of our highly valued sponsors is below. As usual please support these businesses this year and

don‟t forget to mention that you are a Southy.

Flav would like players to “LIKE” Emmas Deli Facebook page, if they are on Facebook, of course. He

has arranged a Players Jackpot draw after every game so get up the club for Presentations and the

chance to win big money.

If you would like to continue your sponsorship in 2018 and haven‟t received your “Sponsorship Letter

of Request” please contact Simon Owens, Sponsorship Officer on 0419 808 663 or email

[email protected]. New sponsors are always welcome.
