I was raised on Georgia football; that was a no-brainerwith generations of Bulldogs in my family. My parents havealways come to Athens from the coast to follow the men’s andlady’s basketball. But I must admit it wasn’t until recent yearsthat I began to take interest in other UGA sports besides theDawgs on the gridiron.
All I can tell you now is I am hooked! I sat on the edgeof my seat throughout the entire Georgia-Tennessee back-and-forth lady’s basketball thriller this past week. The crowdwas loud and wild and easily the sixth man (or woman!) forthe Lady Dogs’ team. It was much the same excitement atthe Gym Dogs’ season opener against Stanford when SeniorCourtney McCool posted a 9.925 in Georgia’s final routineon the floor to clinch a slim 195.150-195.050 victory. Thesold out Stegeman’s 10,000 fans were holding their breath forthe score but we knew in our hearts McCool had definitelynailed it. And Coach Mark Fox and his boys have me enam-ored as well. Their game against Tennessee was not a nailbiterlike the aforementioned but Travis Leslie’s play was just asthrilling.
I am looking forward to some swim meets as I can onlyimagine the affable Coach Bauerle is fun to see in action withhis athletes. The tennis teams have been collecting Ws and Ilook forward to some time at the Dan Magill Tennis Com-plex. And last season I was a rabid Diamond Dawgs’ fan andthat starts up again late February. I tell you what, “it is greatto be a Georgia Bulldog!”
And it is great to get to know other die-hard dawgs, superfans like Jeff Bell. Jeff Bell supports all 16 UGA sports. I amnot kidding; he attends everything he can. Before he lived inthe Athens area, his family would travel over for what he callsthe “trifecta weekends.” These are weekends set up with allthe teams at home in Athens: gymnastics on Friday, men’sbasketball on Saturday and women’s basketball on Sunday. Ichecked the calendar for those of you out-of-towners and dis-covered we have two coming up. (Feb. 5- Gym Dogs vs. Ken-tucky, Feb. 6- Hoop Dawgs vs. Vanderbilt and Feb. 7- LadyDogs vs. South Carolina) and (Feb. 12- Gym Dogs vs.Arkansas, Feb. 13- Hoop Dawgs vs. South Carolina and Feb14- Lady Dogs vs. Alabama) I bet most men would deemthis a fabulous Valentine’s weekend from their sweethearts.
Speaking of sweethearts, I had the role of Bulldawg Il-lustrated’s Tweetheart until I uploaded twitter to my husbandVance’s i-Phone. Now I hear the bird tweet noise constantlyas he checks in with hundreds of our tweeps also keeping upwith the latest news on the #dawgs. It is quite a loyal crew ofBulldogs and I encourage to join in the fun, we are @bd_il-lustrated. I still tweet on the account and usually you can tellwhich one of us it is as mine are fanfare and his are more inthe action. I am also engaging with folks about all thingsAthens under @guide2athens and then fellow fashionistaBrandy Chandler and I partner on @StreetChicVlog to talkstyle.
Social Media is a contact sport for Bulldogs so get intouch on twitter. Look us up on facebook under Friends ofBulldawg Illustrated. We have fan pages for guide2athensand StreetChicVlog on facebook too.

As I sit and eat this big orange on my desk,I cannot help but smile.
You see, I am somewhat of an anomaly. Icome from a family of dedicated TennesseeVols. Around the holidays I am kind of like ared pimento speck in a big ol’ orange cheesesandwich.
Well, since Wednesday, Georgia and Ten-nessee athletic programs have squared off fourtimes in Athens.
And since Wednesday, Georgia beat all fourof those Volunteer teams.
It doesn’t get much better than that.Andy Landers and the Lady Dogs kicked
things off on Wednesday with an epic coachingmatchup that we previewed here at B.I. Athensin Issue One. The rivalry did not disappoint,as a crowd of over 7,700 filled Stegeman to seethe Lady Dogs beat Tennessee in Athens for thefirst time in 10 years. Freshman JasmineJames, a Memphis girl, turned in a killer per-formance to help take down her home state’smost decorated basketball program.
Next up were the Men’s and Women’sSwimming and Diving teams. Both Georgiateams were coming off of tough losses on theroad at Texas, and the Lady Dawgs were de-fending a home winning streak that stretchedback 68 meets. Both teams barreled over Ten-nessee like a pirate ship busting up the VolNavy.
Finally there was Saturday night’s high-fly-ing, fast-breaking, adrenaline-pumping wood-shed beating that Coach Mark Fox and theHoop Dawgs laid on Bruce Pearl and the 8th-Ranked Tennessee men’s basketball team.
I have never heard Stegeman rock like itdid after Travis Leslie’s windmill dunk in thefirst half of that game. And who would havethought that a Georgia basketball team wouldbe up by 24 points on a top 10 foe with lessthan eight minutes to play?
With all of the success that Georgia is hav-ing over on South Campus, the bar has beenraised for our second issue here at Bulldawg Il-lustrated Athens.
I am especially proud of this edition as itincludes an exclusive interview from GymDogs coach Jay Clark on how his team is re-sponding to adversity. Clark is an intense guywith the experience and vision to keep thatprogram at a championship level, and I am ex-cited to see the Gym Dogs bounce back fromwhat has been an underwhelming start to2010.
It has been a fun two weeks in Athens, andbeing in the heat of SEC basketball season, here is to hoping that we hear the old cheerwell into tournament play.
“It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!”

A special Georgia night to remember
For die-hard Georgia fans, Thurs-day night January 21, 2010 was trulya special one. At 7:00, the eighth-ranked Lady Bulldog basketball team, which has ascended back to the na-tion’s top 10 after a three year drop togood from elite, took on arch-rival, No.3 Tennessee. Halfway around theworld, one of Georgia’s greatest andclassiest athletes ever, some five hourslater, would take on the fast French-man Fael Monfils in the round of 32 atthe Australian Open, tennis’s firstmajor of the year.
While wrapping up my afternoontalk show on Athens Sportsradio 960“The Ref,” I said to my friend and stel-lar co-host Chris Brame that I wasgoing to be greedy and ask for “a dou-ble-header.”
It was a night to remember. The Lady Dogs and Tennessee
went back-and-forth in an instantAthens classic that featured 16 leadchanges and ten ties. Senior sensationAshley Houts and freshman backcourtmate Jasmine James had been cold allgame, but after outstanding defensekept the Lady Dogs in the game, bothhit clutch three pointers to put Geor-gia on the edge. Porsha Phillips scoredon a nifty pass from Houts to giveGeorgia a 51-50 lead with 39 secondsto go. After a James steal, she missedthe front end of a one-and-one, andPhillips was able to corral a monsteroffensive rebound. She delivered atthe line to put Georgia up by three.
A tremendous defensive effortkept the Lady Vols from getting a goodlook, and a raucous Stegeman Coli-seum crowd went into a state of eu-phoria, as the Lady Dogs had wrappedup an unforgettable 53-50 victory, ar-guably the program’s biggest triumphin a decade.
It was one thing to get to that
point, to be in a top ten vs. top tencontest with first place in the South-eastern Conference, but to deliver avictory … that took it to a differentlevel.
With a monumental triumphwrapped up, it was onto the televisionto watch “Big John” down under in thefirst grand slam of the year.
Carrying the momentum of around of 16 appearance in the U.S.Open highlighted by a memorable vic-tory over Andy Roddick, Isner won hisfirst professional title in New Zealandon the eve of Melbourne.
Isner, who led Georgia to an un-defeated national championship in2007, won the first set and was in con-trol in the second. Then the matchturned and Monfils took control.
But Isner would battle back afterdropping the second set and falling be-hind a break in the third. He won con-secutive tie-breakers and joined selectcompany in advancing to the round of16 in consecutive majors.
During the match, ESPN did a nicepiece of Isner, and featured a slew offootage and sound featuring Georgia’sManny Diaz, the country’s top coach, and lots of scenes from the Dan MagillTennis Complex. Included was asuper-sized singles draw from the ’07NCAAs, where Isner advanced to thefinals, where he dropped a heart-breaker 7-6 in the decisive third set.
John then said, “but this is whatreally mattered, the team tournament, where we won 4-0, 4-0, 4-0, 4-0, 4-1and 4-0 to complete the season unde-feated with the national champi-onship.”
The match ended at around 3:45eastern time … and I’ve never beenhappier to have my annual sleepingpattern disruption from the AustralianOpen.

Despite tough loss to Ole Miss, season continues to be specialAfter posting a perfect record over non-
conference opponents that included Okla-homa and Rutgers, Landers’ ladies have beenhanging tough in the SEC, beating up Ten-nessee in a game where they were severely out-sized. The Lady Dogs have also postedconvincing wins over SEC opponents inFlorida and Arkansas.
The Lady Dogs ran out to a school-record16-0 start before finally dropping their firstgame to Vanderbilt in Nashville.
Landers’ squad now stands at 18-2, thesecond loss following the landmark Tennesseevictory in a nail-biter against Ole Miss. TheLady Dogs overcame a double digit deficit inthe second half only to have their hearts bro-ken at the hands of a Rebel three pointer, sunkwith a mere five seconds on the clock.
Considering the 2010 team features more
freshman than returning letter-winners, a cer-tain degree of inconsistency is to be expected.
The Lady Dogs’ triumphant return to thetop of the conference was what Coach AndyLanders compared to validating a ticket. Lan-ders knows, however, that if this team is goingto keep its successes through the SEC sched-ule, the offense must improve.
After the Tennessee win, Landers ex-plained to the media, “I’ll be shocked if bysometime in that first second week of Febru-ary if this team’s not scoring 15 more points agame. We have the ability.”
Judging by player responses, Landers’message is not falling on deaf ears in thelocker room.
“We are by no means where we need to be,where we want to be,” said Senior AshleyHouts. “The fact that we’ve come together, and
really pulled together and fought to do some-thing to put our names in the history books, that’s really meant a lot.”
Senior Angel Robinson echoed Houts’ andLanders’ improvement-centered mentality,“Just looking at our record, I’m like ‘wow’, butwhen I step out on the court I’m like ‘we haveso much potential that we haven’t gotten toyet.’ That’s how we look at it.”
The Lady Dogs head on the road to faceWestern division foes Mississippi State andAuburn before returning to Stegeman for abig-time matchup with LSU.
Can Landers and his team fulfill their self-proclaimed potential and return to the top ofthe SEC?
“I think we can be one of the top teams inthe nation, if we put our minds to it,” addedAngel Robinson.

Breakthrough ... Signature win ... Woodshed beatingCall it what you may, but there is no question that
the Bulldogs’ 78-63 victory over the 8th ranked TennesseeVolunteers sent a clear message to the rest of the SEC.Georgia basketball is a force to be reckoned with.
The difference on this night was that for the first timesince conference play opened, Georgia refused to beatthemselvs on the hardwood.
After giving up second half leads to Kentucky, OleMiss and Mississippi State, the Dawgs finally got out oftheir own way and finished off Tennessee with a strongsecond half.
After the game, Coach Fox credited the victory toimproved passing and stronger play coming from theGeorgia bench.
After hearing SEC coaches talk time and time againabout how harder it was to beat the Georgia team in2010, (Kentucky’s Mark Calipari even called for Mark Foxto be named midseason coach of the year) it was good tohear Tennessee’s Bruce Pearl deliver the first post-gamesound bytes from a defeated SEC opponent.
“We didn’t get beat because we came in overconfi-dent or because we didn’t respect our opponent,’’ saidBruce Pearl, the man who put Tennessee basketball backon the map. “We got beat by a better team today, it wasclear.’’
While much of the Georgia contingent was blownaway by just how dominant the Dawgs played against theVols, the team was just as surprised by the fans’ transfor-mation of Stegeman Coliseum from a humble arenaknown for gymnastics into a hardwood house of horrorswhere SEC opponents are stopped in their tracks.
The Tennessee game marked the Hoop Dawgs firsthome sellout in two years, and the most raucous studentsection seen on campus since Georgia beat Auburn…infootball.
"There won't be a lot of people who win here. I'mcertain of that," Pearl said after the game.
Albert Jackson echoed the sentiments of many Geor-gia players during post-game interviews. “I wish the fanswould understand how much it helps us when they come
out,” he said. “When you get tired, the fans boost you.”And for when the fans get tired, well, there is Travis
Leslie. The acrobatic guard from Decatur posted hisfourth highlight on ESPN’s Sportscenter “Top Ten Plays”in three weeks with a windmill dunk that was specificallydesigned “to give the fans something to cheer for”, asLeslie put it after the game. Leslie flirted with a triple-double, a feat never accomplished by a Georgia player, posting 19 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists against theVols.
Perhaps the most poignant moment of the nightcame well after the final buzzer sounded at Stegeman Col-iseum. Eating dinner with his family after the game, Geor-gia guard Dustin Ware was approached by three youngGeorgia fans, decked out in red and black from head totoe with pens and napkins in hand.
Maybe these Hoop Dawgs should start stretching outtheir hands after big wins. With more wins like Saturday’strouncing of Tennessee, the autograph requests are goingto be out of control.

GYMDAWGS
Adversity hits Clark and team after lossesWhen Jay Clark took over the storied Georgia
women’s gymnastics program, no one had to in-form him of the pressure that comes with being thehead coach of the team with the campus’ highestexpectations.
In his 18th year with the UGA gymnastics pro-gram, Clark knows all about the five consecutivenational championships, the 37 individual nationalchampions, the world-class facilities and what itmeans to be a Gym Dog.
With the team’s 1-2 start, it should be no sur-prise that Clark also knows what it will take to gethis squad back to its winning ways, which, inter-estingly enough, means doing more than just win-ning meets.
“No one walked out of that first meet feelinglike we had actually won,” explained Clark. Geor-gia opened the season at home against Stanford onJanuary 9th; the Gym Dogs won that meet by one-tenth of a point.
To Clark and the Georgia program, the differ-ence between a good team and a great team goesbeyond margins of victory and defeat. “There is avery small margin for error,” said Clark. “Gymnas-tics is a sport that you typically don’t see won onthe emotional makeup of a team. And what I meanby that is you are not going to see upsets based ona team coming out and getting jacked up by play-ing good defense like you might in football. Wehave underperformed a bit to this point, and ingymnastics upsets happen when a team under-per-
forms.”Despite the Gym Dogs recent losses at Ala-
bama and Utah, Clark is confident the best is yet tocome with his 2010 squad. “I think you are goingto see more and more consistency out of this team,”Clark said. “We saw a lot of turning in the right di-rection in the last meet (against Utah)…the way webounced back was tremendous, and that is themark of a good team.”
While the Gym Dogs came up short againstthe Utes, they posted their highest total of the sea-son at 196.50. Utah posted a razor thin .05 higherat 196.55. “There have been years where we haven’tbroken the 195 mark until halfway through the sea-son,” Clark added.
To help understand gymnastics scoring mar-gins, Clark offered a simple football analogy.
“A five-tenths victory is about like a touch-down and a point victory is like two touchdowns,”he explained. “So for us to lose by half a tenth of apoint gives you an idea of how close that meet was.
“We have struggled early, but that’s not atypi-cal of what has happened here over the past fiveyears,” acknowledged Clark. “We are real closenow…this team has the potential to win a champi-onship.”
The team will have opportunities to get backon track when it travels to Auburn on Friday andhost Kentucky in Athens on February 5.

The guide2athens blog has ongoing human interest and lifestyle posts:Hope for Haiti- Athenians help Haitians posted by Cheri Leavy I am spending the night with Anderson Cooper every night these days. My husband has accepted this. He knows it is my way to keep my heart and prayers with Haiti and its victims of the earthquake. (Cooper is on the front lines covering the catastrophe in Haiti for CNN which is aired throughout the night.) It is hard to know how to help. But I have found some small ways to help. Locally, there are many initiatives out there by caring folks. I bought a can of Phickles- Hotties for Haiti at East West Bistro last week. Phickles is a gourmet pickle company located in Athens, GA. owned by Angela Tillman (www.phickles.com). She has stocked three local spots a good supply of her canned Hotties: Athens Florist, Heery’s Too and East West Bistro. They all have “HOTTIES FOR HAITI” for $6/Jar and it all goes to Food For The Poor in Haiti. One of my favorite shops in Athens on Clayton street, Agora, helped support Haiti on Monday. UGA graduate
