St. Magdalen de Pazzi Church ~ Flemington, NJ

“Continuing our Journey of Faith” Keynote address by Sister Julia Jamink, SJH Sister Julia, known for her deep faith in God, her great love for the Catholic Church, her wisdom and her joy, will help us rediscover the meaning of faith within a world invaded by an individualism that leads to living as though God did not exist. Both in the main talk and in the workshops the Sisters will strive to stir into flame the light of faith of those who in their daily journey seek to entrust their lives to the Lord with conviction and courage. As requested by Pope Benedict XVI for the “Year of Faith”, the Sisters will lead us in a public profession of faith as proclaimed in the Apostles Creed.

Second Sunday of Lent Reading 1 Gn 15:5-12, 17-18

The Lord God took Abram outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so,” he added, “shall your descendants be.” Abram put his faith in the LORD, who credited it to him as an act of righteousness. He then said to him, “I am the LORD who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” “O Lord GOD,” he asked, “how am I to know that I shall possess it?” He answered him, “Bring me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old she-goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” Abram brought him all these, split them in two, and placed each half opposite the other; but the birds he did not cut up. Birds of prey swooped down on the carcasses, but Abram stayed with them. As the sun was about to set, a trance fell upon Abram, and a deep, terrifying darkness enveloped him. When the sun had set and it was dark, there appeared a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch, which passed between those pieces. It was on that occasion that the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the Great River, the Euphrates.”

Responsorial Psalm Ps 27:1, 7-8, 8-9, 13-14

R. The Lord is my light and my salvation. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? The LORD is my life’s refuge; of whom should I be afraid? R. The Lord is my light and my salvation. Hear, O LORD, the sound of my call; have pity on me, and answer me. Of you my heart speaks; you my glance seeks. R. The Lord is my light and my salvation. Your presence, O LORD, I seek. Hide not your face from me; do not in anger repel your servant. You are my helper: cast me not off. R. The Lord is my light and my salvation. I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD. R. The Lord is my light and my salvation.

Reading 2 Phil 3:17—4:1 or PHIL 3:20—4:1

Join with others in being imitators of me, brothers and sisters, and observe those who thus conduct themselves according to the model you have in us. For many, as I have often told you and now tell you even in tears, conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction. Their God is their stomach; their glory is in their “shame.” Their minds are occupied with earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to himself. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, in this way stand firm in the Lord.

Gospel Lk 9:28b-36

Jesus took Peter, John, and James and went up the mountain to pray. While he was praying his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying. While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen.

In this Year of Faith, the Catholic Bishops of the United States have called for a nationwide effort to advance a movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty through prayer, penance, and sacrifice. Catholics across the nation are being encouraged to pray, fast, and act for increased protections of religious liberty and to rebuild a culture favorable to life and marriage.

This effort is necessary because life, marriage, and religious liberty are under assault.

Fifty-five million children have been lost to abortion. Two upcoming Supreme Court cases could have significant impacts on the definition of marriage. And even with the latest “accommodation,” a federal mandate still forces people of conscience to facilitate insurance coverage of sterilization, contraception, and abortifacient drugs, and forces the employees of Catholic agencies to accept coverage for themselves and their children that violates their Church’s teaching on respect for human life.

The bishops’ call to prayer and sacrifice encourages monthly Eucharistic Holy Hours in cathedrals and parishes, daily rosary, special Prayers of the Faithful at all Masses, fasting and abstinence on Fridays, and the second observance of a Fortnight for Freedom this summer.

In response to the challenges to rights of conscience, the bishops have also launched a nationwide postcard campaign, “Project Life and Liberty,” during February and March. Soon parishes throughout the country will

distribute postcards to help Catholics communicate with their elected representatives in Congress. The goal of this campaign is to encourage Congress to make sure that taxpayers are not forced to subsidize abortion, and that Catholic (and other) individuals and institutions are not forced to violate their moral and religious convictions when they provide or purchase health care, or provide assistance to people in need. Federal law had been generous in protecting the rights of individuals and institutions to act according to their religious beliefs and moral convictions. But political forces are now injecting themselves into the lives of Catholics and Church organizations, substituting their own secular ideology for the Church’s beliefs. Some say the Church should leave politics alone and concentrate on teaching the faith and serving the needy. But what if the State says the Church may not follow her teachings, even in her own institutions? What if the State limits the Church’s ability to serve the needy? What if it says a Catholic nurse has no right to her livelihood because she will not help perform abortions? What if the Church cannot act on her teaching that marriage is the union of one man and one woman? While believers are seeking remedies at all levels of government, the U.S. bishops have called upon the Catholic faithful to join the movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty. Prayer is the ultimate source of our strength—for without God, we can do nothing; but with God, all things are possible.

February 24, 2013 2nd Sunday of Lent

“I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession.” (Genesis 15:7)

Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether our home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home just as we invest in our current abode?

Ten Characteristics of a Christian Steward

A Christian steward seeks these virtues: Prayer, Gratitude, Humility,

Generosity, Trust, Simplicity, Patience, Mercy,

Responsibility and Perseverance.

Points to Ponder

“The will of God never takes you to where the grace of God will not protect you.”

2012 Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Christ Alive in His People Your gift to the 2012 Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports diocesan-sponsored programs that promote Catholic values that enhance human life and spiritual growth, providing families with opportunities for enrichment, education and healing. If you have already made a gift to this year’s appeal, thank you! If you haven’t done so, your help is still very much needed. Your gift to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal is crucial to our Church’s ability to serve God’s people in need.

“He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body.”

Philippians 3:21 In the midst of all the everyday music that we sing and play and pray here in our parish and our communities, there are those occasional nuggets of pure gold that transform us and our assemblies. We are no longer the same people that we were before. We recognize it when it has happened, and we are forever sensitized and enlightened by the memory of that experience. What we are called to do is to change our hearts, so that the conditions are right for the divine spark to set us on fire over and over again and take us to new places that we cannot even dream of.

Make us vulnerable and open to your touch, all-powerful God,

that we may be transfigured by the music we sing to your glory.

Keep us alert and ready to be channels of your grace,

so that our music and singing

not only clothes the rites with beauty but heightens the sense of your presence within

us.

Human Life is Sacred Fresh Commitment to Life…

Cardinal Justin Rigali, in the annual Mass for Life in Washington DC in 2007, commented on the Roe vs. Wade decision that legalized abortion on January 22, 1973. He called it a “misguided use of judicial power exercised in the name of the authority resting in the people of the United States of America.” He went on to say, “Each passing year confirms us in the pain of recognizing the violence inflicted upon millions and millions of unborn children and even partially born children in our land. It is important that this truth be acknowledged, that repentance be sincere, and that effective means be taken to stop this grotesque tragedy, while preventing it from being repeated in the future. At the same time each passing year confirms us in new hope for the future. As people of prayer, we are moved by the words of Saint Paul, who says: "...we have set our hope on the living God" (1 Tim 4:10). The word of God and His commandments encourage us in our efforts, and they certainly inspire the rising generation to form new attitudes and assume a fresh commitment to the cause of life.” !

Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody

11 Stories of Real People

Who Discovered the Underrated Power of Grace

Forgiveness will unleash a power in your life that is underrated and often ignored. It is underrated mainly because it is underused. We fail to capture the power of forgiveness because we are afraid of it, because we have grown comfortable in our familiar wounds, or because we are sinfully stubborn. But the power is there waiting for us. This little book, and the eleven real life stories in it, will help you capture that power. Because everybody needs to forgive somebody. Please pick up your free copy of this book in the foyer of Church –

St. Cecilia’s gift to you this Lent.

SNOW?? Has this winter

got you singing the SNOW REMOVAL BLUES? Probably not so bad for the average homeowner, but a little painful for the parish. Although our snowfall this season has not yet been significant, more of a nuisance, keeping our parking lot and walkways safe for you and your family is still our top priority. So far this winter we have paid $8,758.00 in ice & snow removal – and more predicted for this weekend. OUCH! Remember that pennies for the parking lot jar? We thought we’d dust it off and bring it out again to collect spare change to help ease our Snow Removal Blues!

As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Coffee Time March Coffee Time, next weekend, is being hosted by our Music Ministry. However, if any parishioner would like to bake something, we can always use extra offerings.

Why not try out that new recipe on us!!
