Issue 1 NOV 2012 | BUILT NOT BOUGHT MAGAZINE

    -Gordy Lee

Cooking with Gordy LeeGreetings and welcome to what we hope to be at least a monthly deal. We hope youll like what we dwith all this

I started this project more that a year ago with the idea for a book to be soldthru Amazon and Barnes and Noble featuring my photos and those of others.Times what they are and money being tight around the Gordy Lee World Head-quarters, we opted for a more affordable, and way better format.

With the magazine we hope to host the photographers and car owners thatdont have big bucks gear or rides to make it into a national, supermarket, cook-ie cutter tabloid. In BxB we also have no ads, tech articles, jokes or other fillerto take up valuable space that we need for cars. If we do run adds (a possibility

in the future) they will be in the back pages, and only to support local business-es related to home built cars and bikes.

With all that in mind, when you get the digital version youll see hyperlinked textthat will redirect you to Facebook or another site linked to that person or car.We also want this to a magazine open to just about anything so dont be afraidto hit us up, we would love to feature your pre 65 car or bike.

Our next issue will be our Christmas edition - a photo pictorial with very little writing but a lot of cocars. Beyond that well come back with issue #2 in January and issue #3 in March or so so sttuned!

NEXT ISSUE: Its Christmas time and that means the first annual BuiltNot Bought Christmas Special!

Johns 55 wagon first saw life as a 2 door family station wagon until he acquiredin 94 and started On Fyres restoration and customization in his home shop (aplace of many other hot rod and Harley builds that we hope to showcase in futureissues of BxB).

This car though is Johns pride and joy and lots of work went into it including rusrepair, re-wiring, paint, engine work and then putting it all together to create one the best tri-five wagons weve seen in a long time. According to John he never hatrailered the car anywhere and drives it every year to the Hot August Nights

show in Reno, as well as other shows around the state.

The rainbow metallic flame paint job is what really got our attention and is proba-bly a one of kind deal, given the size of the flake. A truly awesome find for Built nBought, and a cool guy to boot. We look forward to seeing more of Johns stuff inthe future.

Only a few Car Kulture hot rods from Tacoma, WA can really boast that the own

100% hand built the car. Joshs slant window Model A meets that criteria all th

way. Josh started the build by locating the body on Waller Road in Tacoma, layin

the frame and building the hot rod in what amounts to a one car garage in Tacoma

Racing buddies helped Josh with a Franklin rear end and a sprint car motor that

idle is one of the sweetest power plants weve heard in a long time. Beer keg futanks and diamond plate interior deck out the inside. At the time Josh wanted

complete looking hot rod, but not overly finished, hence the screwdriver door pin

holding the doors to the body.

At Cam Winders this year Josh won Best Hotrod (and well deserved we mig

add). Josh is also know for the louvers he can cut on his 1950s vintage louver m

chine and is always happy to trade parts, cash or Frisko Freeze hamburgers.

When Patrick Ward was the ripe old age of 11, his parents had the fore-sight to help him into a 1968 Impala Fastback. Not old enough to drive, Patfigured heck thats ok and a plan was made to get the car from grocery get-ter, to just a getter. Pat needed money, friends, and the support of other gear

heads as well as shop owners to make his dream come alive. Pat did every-thing from mowing yards to crushing and recycling cans to swap for repair fa-vors and parts. Early on, Pat became friends with Goofy aka Matt Snyderwho helped Pat with his pin stripe and lace pattern plans. Another shot in thearm came from Coop - owner of CJs Custom exhaust (one of Pats majorlawn mowing customers). In exchange, Coops turned a few wrenches on thiscar, and helped Patrick live his dream. In todays society, young people arechallenged with heavy decisions, being an eleven year old car owner was inour opinion a smart choice all the way around. Patrick is now 18, a 2012 grad

uate of Puyallup High School, and finally enjoying the getter.

The really hard core Car Kulture guys usually start with a rust bucket...something thats maybe been passed around on Craigslist because nobodywants it, or its too big of a project. Geoff and his dad Bob knew when theysaw the car it had potential and drug it home.

With most of the lower half in rust, Geoff and his wife Laura commenced sur-gery to remove the cancer and weld in new floor pans, rockers, and 8 inchesup the doors. Hot rod flatz, in blue was chosen by Laura as the color to sealthe old coupe, not a bad choice, and complements the new chromed bump-ers. By the looks of it Geoff is off to a good start!

Most likely to be pulled over is the car show award that pro

ably best describes this blue terror from Orting Washingto

Father and son team Willie and Ace Rakes built the 37 Chry

ler coupe from used parts found on Craigslist. The 440 pow

plant, salvaged from a Winnebago motor home roars to life.

We shot most of the pictures for this spread at the Pierc

County Fairgrounds in the spring of 2012 where I invited Willand Ace to bring the coupe. After gaining access to the grass

area by a park employee, cars began to arrive for the shoot, a

driving carefully, to not disturb the grass beneath them, or th

adjacent memorial service at a close by park building. Tot

we shot 6 cars that day, and had a lot of fun doing it.

As Im standing there getting a nice pep talk from the park em

ployee about how cool it is were there and how we shou

consider using the park more in the future, the un-baffled 44

is heard a short distance away. The car inches onto the fiel

and then Willie punches it for just a second, the torque fis

tails the coupe and grass flies. I think for a minute, with th

park guy standing beside me were screwed and then he say

awesome. One of my best photographer moments beside

Willies departure... that Ill remember a lifetime.

As the photo shoot wrapped up, I moved to the other side o

the park to check out a memorial service being held for som

one I knew. In attendance were 200 people or so and bout 10

automobiles (most with security systems armed) within a fe

feet of the service. The exit from the shoot was past these me

morial service cars. Waiting like car alarm bait for the Rat Ki

er to do its thing, the un-suspecting daily drivers would soo

    be woken.

Respectfully, Willie and Ace idle and creep through the parkinarea, but the un-baffled beast is to much... As the vibratio

sets off a few dozen chirping cars, damn near everyone run

out of the building to see WTF just happened. The Rat Killer e

capes onto Meridian Ave (aka Puyallup drag strip) in a smoke

    cloud of tire smoke.

The resurrected drag racer look suits this car very well. Kudo

    to Ace and Willie!

In 1953 Hollywood singer and Olds

pitchman Mel Torme touted the 53

Olds 88, as futuristic, plush and

    powerful with its hydo-matic driv

and Rocket motor. This Olds is no ex

ception, and in 100% original condi

tion. Third owner Bryan Epps only

had to change the oil and install new

plugs and a electronic ignition to get

    the Rocket on the road.

Bryan purchased the Olds in a typic

    left outside, rained on, Northwest

condition. Bryan stripped the Olds t

bare metal, reshot it with a black

    satin finish, and then complemented

that with a red flake roof and a sew

    Mexican blanket interior.

Bryan being a Boeing employee (and

working the late shift) works on his

cars (he has three) sometimes till we

hours of the morning at his shop

Vampire Customs after turningwrenches at Boeing for eight hours.

The Olds is a definite keeper, but we

would like to see a cut out of Mel

Torme with the car at shows. Kudos

to Bryan for saving this piece of

    Rocket history.

    Carmageddon 2012

you MuSt Be DeADWebster's defines Armageddon, n; as the final battle or the end of athe good stuff. Could Carmageddon 2012 be the last Cam Winders horod party? God, I hope not. You have to admit Gary and Joyce (as well athe rest of the Cam Winders club) really do a heck of a swell job puttin

this on. The Car Kulture really comes alive at this show, with pin-uptraditional hot rods, lots of inked skin, and club cooked cuisin(burgers).

Most impressive was the distance cars drove yes drove, through thcarnage, debris, and fallout of the Hawaiian shirt, straw hat wearinGood Guys driving, plastic, billet laden hot rods purchased from mail o

der customizers. Victory was truly in the hands of the Cam Winders antheir guests, most uniformed in black T-shirts and directly aligned wit

    the Cam Winders Army.

Throughout the revolt, music was spewed by The Hot Rod Romeos, LRay and the Upper Cuts, Bonsai Surf, and Piston Ready with Lil Max. Pinups Against Cancer stole the show with the annual Ms. Cam Winder pageant, hosted by the always lovely Ms. Dessi De Vine and a bounty obeauties, all competing for the highly coveted Ms. Cam Winder title.

queen and 2 runner ups were crowned and congratulated by the CaWinders Army of beer breathed, over sexed, gear heads.

Assisting with the defense of the Graham sector: Street Freaks, LoCause, Black Top Rebels, and Low Motion from the Auburn sector. In thend we were all lucky enough to be at one of the best hot rod parties othe planet. After Cam Winders, Amocat, and the Rebel Riot event, thKulture scene just kinda hung out were ever for the rest of the summeLets all hope Gary and Joyce got at least one more planned...
