The Founding Committee A “fluid” group • The needs at the beginning may not be the same aVer even just
the first year. • You needs will change.
• The Chair of your Commi3ee may not be the best President for the Board. That’s ok!
• Try to have your eye on both current and future needs.
Who makes a good committee member? Not everyone will be a good member of your founding commi3ee.
• Well connected • Brings specific skills to the group • Passionate about promoKng high school mountain
biking Most Importantly. . . Ready to get some work done!

Key Roles What are the key roles that need to be filled to ensure a successful founding commi3ee? • Chair/President • Treasurer • Legal Advisor/Secretary
These are legally required when your league transiKons to Chapter League status.
Committee Chair The Chair is the leader of the founding commi3ee, and may eventually lead the Board of Directors as well. Works closely with NICA Board and NICA Staff on league planning, budgeKng and other issues. What to look for: • Non-‐profit experience
• Experience on a board of directors • Understanding of managerial pracKces • Passionate about both youth development and high school mountain biking

Treasurer Works closely with the League Director to complete forward budgeKng and assists with financial planning. Also works closely with NICA Financial Director to do financial planning. What to look for: • CPA or Financial Industry Experience
• This is key – you want someone with lots of financial experience, can communicate and understand complex financial idea and use budgeKng tools.
• Someone who understands the sport of mountain biking and race/event promoKon is nice
Legal Advisor/Secretary Reviews legal documents and contracts for the league (sponsorship, business relaKonships, etc.). Controls all of the legal documents, keeps minutes for meeKngs, and maintains legal records for the league. What to look for: • Doesn’t have to be an a3orney, but NICA encourages it • Experience establishing a business in your state

Business Advisor You are starKng a business and it needs to be well run. Having someone with experience running a successful business, from operaKons to structure, is important.
What to look for: • Business Experience! • Flexible, available and willing to help
Some Other Important Roles Venue Help – someone who is well connected with land managers. OVen Kmes this is a current race promoter or someone who has experience puhng on mountain bike races locally. Team and Coach Support – help with outreach or working with school administrators. Former principals, school administrators or teachers can be great in this role. Development Advisor – someone with experience raising funds for a non-‐profit in your area. This may be through individual donaKons or through sponsorship.

Sub-Committees Fundraising Commi;ee – works with the league directors to idenKfy sources of fundraising, whether it be through individual donors or corporate sponsorship. Venue Commi;ee – works with local land managers to idenKfy venues suitable for league races. Team Development Commi;ee – Teams and coaches are your “boots on the ground.” Having support for them will help them be successful.
Recruiting For Your Committee • Parents of league parKcipants or other student-‐athletes
• Will have a strong connecKon • Local business community • School teacher or administrators Get them out to an event!

Committee Member Profile Max Bradley, President Colorado League Commi;ee Max grew up on BMX bikes racing regionally around his home in Atlanta during his High School years. Mountain Bikes were yet to be conceived back in those days. AVer college Max transiKoned to “more” wheel and has spent the bulk of his career in the transportaKon industry. Currently, Max is in Sales Management with UPS in Denver. Max is an avid Mountain Biker and all around cyclist. Following years of triathlon and running Max has focused in on mountain bike racing as his primary compeKKve pursuit. “I love everything about High School Mountain Bike racing here in Colorado and across the country with NICA. The fitness these kids develop, the team building they engage in, and the character I see them build is incredible. I feel very fortunate to be a part of it all.”
