Introducing the Building Reading Stamina PosterThe theme of the Building Reading Stamina Posterinfers the similarities between how athletes buildstamina physically and how readers build stamina inreading. When describing what stamina is to yourstudents, you may choose to use an example from yourown life when you have had to build physical stamina oryou can use a story about a successful athlete who hasworked hard to succeed in a sport.

Begin by telling students that they will be working togetherthis year to build stamina in reading. Explain that staminais the ability to stay with something (like reading) when itgets hard and to push yourself to do more. Athletes mustpractice consistently, just like readers must practicereading consistently. Athletes push themselves when theyare challenged and readers must do the same. Tell the

students that the Building Reading Stamina Poster willhelp them remember the steps to helping them becomestronger readers who are able to challenge themselves.Refer to each of the bullets on the Building ReadingStamina Poster and explain them. You may choose tointroduce each bullet as a mini-lesson, spending more timeon each skill before moving on to the next bullet. If yourstudents have difficulty choosing appropriate books forindependent reading, spending more directed time on theChoose Wisely bullet may be necessary. The Set RealisticGoals bullet is another important step that may requireexplicit instruction and scaffolding as well.

Finding Your Personal BestThe purpose of this activity is to time students as theyread and to help students find a baseline number ofpages that they are able to read comfortably in 20minutes. It is important to keep the goal of this lesson asecret until the end so that students do not inflate thenumber of pages they have read during the Personal Bestactivity. Begin by asking the students to mark wherethey are going to start reading (using a bookmark orsticky note). Without bringing attention to the timer, tellthe students to begin reading independently.

After five minutes, announce that they must stopreading and immediately mark where they left off.Instruct the students to write their names on a stickynote or scrap piece of paper and record the number ofpages they read in five minutes. As an added challenge, you may ask them to multiply that number by four. Thisis the number of pages the reader is able to readcomfortably in 20 minutes. This Personal Best number isfor the student to know and for you to use whenassessing whether he/she is building stamina for readingover time. As the student improves in building stamina, volume of reading will also improve. Periodic check-ins ofhow much students are reading in 20 minutes is a usefulway to assess overall improvement.

Go for the Goal!Just like athletes set goals for themselves, readers canalso set goals in reading. Bring students attention tothe Set Realistic Goals bullet on the Building ReadingStamina Poster and explain that they will be settingstamina goals for themselves, as readers, and they willcheck in on their goals often to determine if they areimproving. Distribute the Go for the Goal! Reproducibleand encourage students to keep it updated daily.
