I was not well enough to aend work that week and I have been busy catching up. Friday 1 June was Mrs Fraser’s last day as she proceeded on leave. Mrs Collinet is now on class 1CF full me except for Thursdays which is an execuve release day. I would like to wish Ms Anita Farajian a warm welcome to our school. Ms Farajian now provides Mrs Collinet’s execuve release day on Thursdays and works with some classes on Friday to provide the class teacher with release from face-to face teaching me. Warm congratulaons go to Ms Halwani who gave birth to a healthy baby boy last week. Mum and baby are doing well. You may have seen in the media that schools are moving to doing NAPLAN online and the first group of schools did NAPLAN online this year. Belmore North Public School will be doing NAPLAN online next year. Teachers will be compleng training later this year and checking that the school’s technology is up to the task. Unlike the pencil and paper NAPLAN test, the online test takes place across 2 weeks. To help prepare students for NAPLAN online next year, the school has paid for a subscripon to a touch-typing program. This will help students develop beer skills in using a keyboard to complete the wring task of the NAPLAN test. Our wonderful P&C group connues to be busy with a range of acvies in which you can parcipate. In addion to fund-raising for the school, the P&C recently held a fund-raiser to raise awareness about Ausm and coming up on Friday 22 June there is a Big Morning Tea and a P&C meeng. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you on the day. Joining the P&C is a great way to meet new parents and to feel a part of our school community. Children take a great deal of pride in knowing that their parent is part of the P&C. The majority of parents in our school community agree that Belmore North should be a “uniform” school. This means that every student wears correct school uniform every day. I would like to thank all the parents who make the extra effort to make sure that their children wear correct school uniform. The children look so smart and ready for a full day of learning. When children wear the correct uniform it adds to the tone of our school and sends a message to others in the community that children, parents and staff take pride in their school and what it achieves. Please make sure that your child wears correct uniform every day. The learning focus for this week is English. Here are some of the learning outcomes that we would like to see Kindergarten children achieve by the end of their first year of school: in reading every child reading at level 5-8. Some students can achieve at higher levels. in vocabulary, the more words students can use, the beer they can express themselves. Try to help your child learn new words to use. in wring, children should be able to write 1 or 2 simple sentences, form leers correctly and use capital leers and full stops. Children should be able to spell the words that they have been taught. in phonics, children should be able to say and write all the names and common sounds of the alphabet in hearing and manipulang sounds, children should be able to say the new word when one sound is taken away, for example, if the word is mat, what word would you say if you take away the m. North News | 2018 Issue 07 Week 8 Building on Strengths-Focused on the Future

Class News 4-6L 4-6L have had a great start to the year! A favourite thing for us to do is to feed our apple cores to the chickens from Belmore Boys High School. Thanks to the wonderful Mr Chahrouk from next door, we had the amazing opportunity to not only visit the BBHS chook house residents: Beyoncé’, The Single Ladies and their latest flatmate – Prince, but to collect their daily eggs. It was so exciting! But the best was yet to come… After taking turns to collect each egg from the chook house nest, 4-6L students took those eggs into our kitchen, followed instructions and a recipe, and each helped to measure, pour, stir and whipped up a fresh batch of pancakes. We enjoyed them with jam, Nutella and cream. Soooo…good! Thanks ladies! …if you don’t mind, we’ll be back soon for some more of your best! What should we cook next???? PS – recipe must contain eggs!!!

2W

This term, 2W have been learning about persuasive texts. Students worked in a small group to create a drink advertisement. Each group tried to persuade other classes to purchase their drink. 2W have also been working hard to use a range of interesting words to write descriptive sentences during writing warm ups.

In maths, students are learning to use the split and jump strategy

to add three-digit and two-digit numbers.

Arwa sifts the flour. Tayla adds in the Adam has a turn. Ready to collect Prashida mixes Harry and Adriana stir it up.

Parents as Teachers and Classroom Helpers- PaTCH We were proud to provide the opportunity for parents to participate in the PaTCH program this term. The aim was to increase parent and caregiver confidence in supporting children’s learning at home and in school. The program was run by Mrs Pelesasa and Mrs Austin. The 10-week training program gave parent volunteers skills to support children to read, write and count in the early years of schooling. Our 8 enthusiastic volunteers participated in 5 training sessions covering:

how children learn talking and listening in the early years learning to read learning to write and learning to quantify (that is, developing a strong sense of the numbers and the size of a set of objects

that numbers represent).

The in-class literacy and numeracy support enabled participants to complete tasks and work closely with a group of students on the session topics. The participants collected examples of student learning in a scrapbook to support their training and to document their learning journey. Our parent’s evaluation indicated the program was valuable. Volunteers experienced greater confidence when working with students and applying their learning. The parents felt the program provided them with literacy and numeracy strategies to use when working with students at school and also their own children at home. They thoroughly enjoyed interacting with students and being part of the action of a busy classroom. Congratulations to our fantastic PaTCH parents who did such a great job in the classroom. We look forward to running the program again in Term 3.

Arriving at School on Time - Special Reward for Students. We would like to show our appreciation to all those students who arrive at school before the morning bell. Starting from Monday 4th June next week,

every student who arrived before the morning bell every day will receive a special reward of watching a movie in the hall and each qualifying student will receive a free snack. The movie will be shown on either Thursday or Friday of the last week of term. We will be running this special program in Term 3 and Term 4 as well.

We are looking forward to rewarding as many students as possible. Time in class equals time in learning. Remember, all you have to do is be here before or as the bell is ringing.

Community Corner What you can do to help your child with spelling

Explain to your child that some words can be sounded out, but not all English words can be spelt correctly by ‘sounding out', eg

the words ‘you' and ‘said'.

Talk to your child about how you spell, and what you do when you don't know how to spell a word.

Encourage your child to write at home on paper and on the computer, eg filling in forms, writing notes to family members, writing phone messages and reminder notes, making lists, replying to letters and emails, and sending cards.

Provide a dictionary and use it together. Remember that dictionaries are more useful if your child knows about the alpha-bet and how a dictionary works. Encourage your child to first try spelling unknown words themselves, and then praise the parts of the word that are correct and suggest what else is needed.

Say, cover, write, check

When learning to spell an unknown word, first talk about what the word means, then try learning to spell it using the following technique:

look carefully at the word

say the word

cover the word

write it from memory

uncover and check your attempt against the correct word, repeat as needed.

What you can do when your child asks how to spell a word

Encourage your child to have a go first, and then discuss their effort.

Make sure they have access to a dictionary (if they have learnt to read) and know how to use it.

Simply tell your child how the word is spelt and talk about it together http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/english/english-tips/
