The first priority of the Methodist Hospitals administration is to serve our patients well. To do so, we must be trusted stewards of the organization’s capital, facilities, staff, and other resources to ensure that our hospitals are positioned to continue to provide for the health care needs of our communities now and in the future. Recognizing significant shifts in the health care landscape, our Board and leadership carefully examined areas of opportunity and growth for Methodist Hospitals and embarked on a process to consider partnering with another health care system. In 2017, having had initial contacts with a number of potential partners, we entered exclusive discussions with Franciscan Alliance. Those exclusive discussions allowed us the opportunity to explore the benefits of a potential partnership. During this time, leadership from both systems and our communities worked diligently to assess what a partnership might mean for our employees, physicians, patients and the communities of Northwest Indiana. However, after months of thorough and thoughtful negotiations, we were unable to align on critical issues around the financial, operational and clinical service line implications of the proposed partnership, and at the end of the year we agreed to suspend merger talks. We are resolute in our commitment to continue to look for the right opportunities to chart a path forward for Methodist Hospitals to ensure sustainable growth and success. We are financially sound and are confident in our ability to continue navigating the current marketplace. However, our focus in 2017 was on much more than a partnership exploration. It was a year in which we achieved important milestones and made significant contributions to the communities we serve. This report is our accounting of the efforts we have made in the past year to ensure access to high quality, compassionate and cost effective health care for you and your family. We will continue building on our history of excellence, and sincerely appreciate your support as we forge ahead, guided by the commitment to do what is in the best interest of our patients, employees, physicians and community.

Quality Indicators 2017

Reducing Opioid Use for Pain Management

In 2017, Methodist Hospitals and other

institutions partnered with the Indiana

Hospital Association (IHA) in committing

to reduce the number of people addicted

to opiates.

Methodist has begun the work of ensuring

that our practices are consistent with

the standards of The Joint Commission.

That includes sharing data on prescribing practices, as well as

educating prescribers and patients on safe prescribing

guidelines.

Methodist is also developing pain

management protocols for

procedures, such as hip and knee

replacement and spinal surgeries,

that effectively control pain while

minimizing the use of opioid medications.

2017 was the third year of a five-year effort to reach the top decile of quality care among U.S. hospitals. Methodist Hospitals continues to make important strides toward this goal, and our performance is especially strong in the areas of mortality and patient safety. Below are some areas in which Methodist Hospitals has already reached key benchmarks.

2017 Highlights

MAGNET RECOGNITION FOR NURSING EXCELLENCE

Methodist Hospitals is the first Northwest Indiana hospital to achieve The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet recognition. With this achievement, Methodist Hospitals joins the global Magnet community - a select group including less than 10 percent of the hospitals in the United States. The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program honors heath care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing services. Magnet recognition is the highest national credential for nursing excellence, serving as the gold standard for nursing practice. The evaluation process was rigorous and comprehensive, including bedside nurses and nursing leadership, departments across the organization, the executive team and members of the board of directors. Magnet recognition is an impressive and important distinction for our organization and staff as well as the communities we serve.

JOINT COMMISSION ACCREDITATION

In June, Methodist Hospitals received official notification that we have earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. The Gold Seal of Approval® is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective patient care. The Joint Commission team of expert surveyors evaluated our compliance with standards in areas that have impact across the entire organization. These included emergency management, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership, and medication management. Surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews. As a group, the surveyors were impressed with the level of staff engagement they encountered and with the level of preparation and maturity displayed by the Methodist staff with whom they interacted.

“ I owe my only son’s life to the doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospitals. I call him my “miracle baby”. Without them, my son would not be here today. Our family is in awe of the care we received and continue to receive at Methodist.”

NEWLY RENOVATED NORTHLAKE CAMPUS EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT AND ICUs OPEN

2017 saw the completion of newly renovated Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and Emergency Department, a $12.1 million investment at the Northlake Campus in Gary. The project, completed in 14 months, was designed to support best practices, and includes up-to-date technologies and improved workflow that greatly enhance the Hospital’s ability to serve Northwest Indiana as a verified Level III Trauma Center. The renovated Northlake Campus Emergency Department features 15 large rooms with improved patient privacy that includes doors instead of curtains, updated nurse call systems, the latest patient telemetry monitoring systems and televisions. Its design enables physicians, surgeons and staff to reduce ER wait times and improve overall efficiency. The renovation also includes a Fast –Track Area where patients with less critical needs are seen and treated quickly. The ICUs feature a new 12-bed ICU and a renovated 6-bed ICU for a total of 18 private and spacious rooms that accommodate the latest technologies.

TRUEBEAM RADIOTHERAPY SYSTEM

The Methodist Hospitals Oncology Program enhanced its radiation therapy capabilities with the addition of the TrueBeam System. TrueBeam, the most advanced system available, enables new treatments for a wide variety of cancer cases, including lung, breast, abdomen and head and neck cancers. TrueBeam delivers fast, non-invasive, accurate image-guided treatments, exposes patients to 25% less radiation, and enhances the patient experience.

VERIFICATION AS A LEVEL III TRAUMA CENTER

Thanks to the remarkable work of our dedicated surgeons, physicians, nurses and staff, the Methodist Hospitals’ Northlake Campus was verified as a Level III Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons in 2017. We were the first in Northwest Indiana to earn Level III verification. Level III Trauma verification is a testament to the skill and hard work of our dedicated and passionate employees. Verified trauma centers must meet essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance as outlined by the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma.

SECOND CAREFIRST LOCATION OPENS IN MERRILLVILLE

Methodist Hospitals expanded the footprint of its ambulatory care centers with the launch in February 2017 of a second CareFirst Immediate Care Center in Merrillville, just off Route 30 at Rhode Island Street. CareFirst Immediate Care Center offers care for a variety of non-emergent acute illnesses and injuries. The CareFirst facility also houses physician offices and the Methodist Hospitals Cardiac Rehab services.

A Strong Foundation

The Methodist Hospitals Foundation remains committed to securing philanthropic support for the programs and services of the hospital. In addition to disbursing funds previously raised to meet specific needs of various departments, in 2017 the Foundation focused efforts to benefit the Heart & Vascular Institute.

The Methodist Hospitals Foundation gratefully acknowledges the generosity of our benefactors, including premier contributors, event sponsors, foundations, corporations, businesses, and individuals. We are honored to recognize the gifts received for fiscal year of January 1 through December 31, 2017.
