“ While the fi rst chapter opens with a tongue-in-cheek warning, ‘Do not expect ever to see a phoenix. They are very rare,’ the volume goes on to recount the many ways that the mythical creature appears in ancient and contemporary culture. … The fi nal chapter explores the phoenix’s place in popular culture, from experimental cars to military missiles to the Phoenix Mars Lander, aptly named after the NASA

research mission ‘rose from the embers, or ashes, of previous missions to Mars.’ This entertaining volume will leave readers wondering where the phoenix might turn up next. Highly recommended for school and public libraries.” — Doug’s Student Reference

What Do IBelieve?

What make the Amish unique in today’s hec-tic world are not their religious beliefs. They

share core beliefs with Christians around the world, both Catholic and Protestant. What separates them ishow they incorporate those beliefs into everyday life.

Shared BeliefsLike other Christians, the Amish believe Jesus was theSon of God, and that he took human form to teachhumanity how to live. They also believe he died on thecross and was resurrected, returning to heaven to liveeternally as part of the Holy Trinity—God the Father,Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

The Amish consider the Holy Bible their most sacredtext, their source of religious principles. They believe itswriters were inspired by God, that the Bible is withouterror, and that its words should be interpreted literally.

In some areas of the world such as the Arctic, seals and other marine mammals are a major part ofpeople’s diet, along with fish. As a result, more than 16 percentof the people living in northern Greenland haveabnormally high levels of mercury in their blood.

Toxic FarmingAlthough mercury and other heavy metals are mostcommon in fish, they can also find their way into farmcrops and livestock. One source is fertilizer that hasbeen made from toxic waste. A 2001 report by theCalifornia Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG)states that this type of fertilizer is extremely harmfulbecause toxic substances contaminate the land.CALPIRG’s research involved testing 29 fertilizers from12 different states. The group found that the fertilizerscontained more than 20 heavy metals includingarsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. One fertilizerfrom Michigan also contained dioxins.

Toxic waste is used for fertilizers in other coun-tries as well. For instance, a carbonated-soda plant

Children of the World

What is it like to live near the frigid Arctic Circle? How is life different in a more tropical South American climate? What does home mean for a child living among a nomadic African people? Children of the World is a series of original portraits connecting elementary students with their global peers. Each volume offers a current snapshot into the life of an individual child from a particular country, region or culture.

“ These attractive titles have immediate “pick-me-up” appeal. The covers feature a full-color photo of a child from the featured country. Inside, readers fi nd a political map of the world with the area in focus outlined and a few basic facts about it. The books function like photo albums with good-quality, well-captioned color photographs being the most prominent feature of each spread. The brief accompanying

texts offer information about the child’s home life and culture.” — School Library

Get elementary students hiking through the vegetation outside their classroom walls and beyond! This extremely visual, six-title set connects students with nature’s infi nite variety, from spiny cactuses that thrive in the desert to giant redwoods wider than a road. A great resource in both the classroom and library, this complete set examines the ways plants make food, reproduce, defend themselves and connect with other forms of life. For example, how people make use of plants, as well as the relationship between plants and animals and between plants and the rest of the environment.

This series shows the concrete relationships between science and nature and daily life. Each heavily illustrated volume tells a story of biomimicry, how scientists and inventors have tried to imitate something in nature in an effort to create better, stronger, safer tools and processes for everyday life. Students will appreciate the vivid imagery in both text and visuals, while teachers will love the suggestions for further reading.

“ These titles offer easy, delicious recipes (some with as few as two ingredients) and insights into the cultures that produced them. Each volume is well researched, and culture and food go hand-in-hand. Each title ends with a metric conversion chart and extensive chapter notes. Clear, large full-color photographs spice up the texts. The language is inviting and not overly challenging, and each book could be used for reports on culture as well for cooking. These tasty books, especially the more obscure Ethiopian title, will be appreciated in most libraries.” — School Library Journal, May 2008
